Porn Star Crossovers

Life's A Bitch, And Then You Mosh
THIS IS NOT A PORN THREAD!

Now that it's out of the way, I want to know what you think of pornstars who try to be crossovers. Most recently, Sasha Grey, self proclaimed "Fuck junkie" earned a spot in a film by Soderbergh, a pretty highly acclaimed Hollywood guy.

I've read a bunch of different reviews, all with obviously different opinions. Some think it's crap, some think it's outstanding, and some think it's typical porn star crossover stuff. Sure, her role is as a call girl, who gives guys the "Girlfriend Experience", but she did fairly well according to almost every review.

Is this starting a new trend, or is she merely one out of a million that could pull it off?

Pornstars don't make crossovers. There's only been one porn star who has successfully crossed over, and that's Sibel Kekilli (Stallone doesn't count). Anyone else that has tried has pretty much failed miserably (Ron Jeremy, Rocco Siffredi, Jenna Jameson, Marilyn Chambers, Traci Lords, Jeff Stryker). Katie Morgan and Sasha Grey really don't count either, as they played porn stars/PSEs in the movies they starred in.

I wouldn't call Ron Jeremy's legit acting career a failure, he obviously isn't a good actor or anything, but he continues to get roles pretty steadily in Hollywood.

I always remembered Nina Hartley in Boogie Nights as well. Technically her character wasn't a pornstar, just a cheating ****.

I'm a big fan of Soderbergh, and I find Sasha Grey to be fucking gorgeous, but I still haven't gotten around to seeing the film yet. I've heard some good and some bad things, but it's Soderbergh so you know at the very least it's going to be interesting.

Oh and NSL, I edited your post and just deleted the word "short" when you said Soderbergh's film was a short film. It wasn't, it's a full length film (77 minutes).

By in large, I'd say porn crossovers are a failure. But, there's been flashes of brilliance. The main thing I want to know, is if there's hope for the future. Porn has obviously changed over the years, and it doesn't pay as well to do internet porn, as it did when you could sign a mega contract, and be set for life.

Pornstars are going to need a back up. They can't exactly go off and be bankers as a second career. Acting might be a legit 2nd option.

Sibel Kekilli attests to the fact that one should never say never. But, here's the thing about Sasha Grey: she's playing a role that she plays in everyday life. Every porn star makes a little money on the side through escorting. Hell, "girlfriend experience" is a hobbyist term (a hobbyist is someone who visits escorts on a frequent basis, sampling all there is to offer). Soderbergh's film technically could have been a documentary if it were set in the Valley instead of Manhattan, as I'm sure Grey's prices as a PSE (porn star escort) aren't very low (I'd guess that she probably charges between four and five thousand an hour).

Maybe Grey's starring role in Soderbergh's film could have signaled something thirty years ago, but an overwhelming majority of porn coming out of the Valley now is gonzo. In order to become popular today, porn stars just need to discuss how they like to get fucked and feign interest in the sex they have on camera. There are no trained thespians in the porn world like there were in the 70s and early 80s, plus there's no incentive to learn how to act, so, if you were to hire a porn star to take on a role that doesn't have any connection to their everyday lives, something tells me they'd flounder. But, maybe there are some natural actors/actresses in the porn business today that we have yet to see come out. Ultimately though, I don't think Grey's performance in The Girlfriend Experience is turning any executive heads towards the Valley.
