Thank goodness for this landmark event in the War on Drugs. Had that weed made it into some stoner's pipe, who knows what would have happened... but if I had to guess I'd say stupid YouTube videos would be watched and Twinkies sales would go up.

Life in prison? Don't they reserve that for murderers and serial rapists? Unless these dudes are like, hardcore Breaking Bad type drug dealers, that seems extreme. It's a conspiracy to distribute marijuana charge, how the fuck does that carry so much weight?

Coming from someone who smokes up regularly, I will say this. Although I feel its extreme for weed they surely knew what they were getting into having that much pot so if they got caught and r going to jail for a long time its their own fault.

Don't get me wrong I think weed laws r extreme but at the same time they are there so if u want to smoke up or deal it don't have so much so if u get caught u get a slap on the wrist.

Weed is a drug. Not by our standards but by the laws of the United States of America. Whether we feel the punishment is harsh or not is irrelevant. These guys knew the law, broke it, and got caught. They're fucking morons for it all and are now paying the price.

From what I read a lot of that was caught by Mexican authorities as this was a cross border thing. Does Mexican drug cartels have anything to do with this?

Considering the fact that they had 17 tons, I would say that the likelihood of them being hardcore drug dealers is very high. Sure marijuana is not as bad for you as other drugs but it is still illegal and do you honestly expect the authorities to treat dealing of those proportions with a slap on the wrist?

You do realize that they are criminals right? I understand that many people believe that marijuana should be legalized, in fact I am one of them. But these people are knowingly breaking the law and complaining about them being punished for that is ridiculous.

Probably wouldn't work in a court of law. Unless they're black, of course.

They broke the law and deserve to be punished, sure. But life in prison? That's a little extreme, especially for weed. I'd think around 20 years would be more appropriate.

Life in prison is the maximum sentence, it does not mean that is what they will get. Even if they do get life it is unlikely that they would actually serve the entire sentence. They did not specify that it was life without parole.
