Sorry if I'm a little late here but apparently Spike Lee is attached to direct & Christian Bale is rumored as Lee Woo-jin. I am not at all excited about this. At least with the american remake of Cell211(Another great film but in a differant league to oldboy) Antonio Resines is going to reprise his role.

What are some of the film fans(JMT, TDigs) opinion on the possible remake?

Since Matt Reeves' superior remake of the already accomplished Let The Right One In, I've been pretty optimistic about American remakes. David Fincher's Dragon Tattoo looks like it's going to be awesome, and I won't strangle Oldboy before it even makes it out of the womb.

I think Hollywood remaking European Cinema tends to be more straightforward, but I'm not too optimistic they could do justice to OldBoy.

As Funkay said, there was meant to be a remake in the pipeline several years ago but even with Spielberg and Smith attached, it never really got me that excited. It would have made money at the Box Office I'm sure, but the original is just so good and was one of the films that really put Korean cinema on the map.

Lee and Bale just wouldn't do it for me, but to be fair I don't think any pairing would.

With Will Smith attached I wouldn't blame you. Bale seems a better fit, and I normally don't rate Bale.

And Jake, I'm hoping for more incest just as much as you are.

From everything I've read the remake (if it goes down) will stick more closely to the manga than the film, which made a bunch of drastic changes.

I'll definitely end up seeing it regardless. A lot of people bitch about remakes, but I usually find them interesting, no matter how much they suck.

Josh Brolin? Now there's a man that can pull off an incest angle.

Yeah.... about that. In this version he's imprisoned on his daughters birth so she'll be 15 when he gets out. The american censorship office(Whatever it's called) won't allow a film that would openly show or even suggest paedophilia along with incest in cinemas.

I don't really mind the remake, let's face it they could make worse remakes. There was pretty serious talk of a "The Lives Of Others" remake a couple of years ago. Nicholas Cage was going to star. I have absolutely no idea how they would carry that one out.

Now American remakes have done some good things in the past. Let's not forgot that "The Departed" was a remake of "Internal Affairs" with Tony Leung. They did a fantastic job there. "Let Me In", "The Magnificent Seven", and "The Birdcage" were all great remakes. Spike Lee's last film "Miracle at St. Anna" wasn't great but he's done quality work before. Actually when they were talking about an english remake years ago I pictured Bale in the lead and John Cusack as the villain. So Brolin/Bale is fine in my opinion. I'm interested in seeing how they handle the twist cause I doubt it's going to be anything close to the original's. We'll just have to wait and see.

I don't like Brolin, personally. He's one of the most overrated actors of the past 5 years, IMO.

I was really hoping with Spike Lee at the helm that the role would have fell into Edward Norton's hands since those two did such a tremendous job together on 25 Hour.
