Some of you may have heard the news, but Yahoo Sports is reporting that Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel knew about the NCAA rules violations committed by Terrell Pryor and four other players last April already, and not this last December like he and Ohio State President Gene Smith claimed.
Why is this potentially a major shit storm? Because the rules the players broke, selling their memoribilia etc, makes them ineligible to play. If Jim Tressel knew about it last April already, that means that he knowingly played five ineligible players for the entire season. The NCAA tends to frown on that. The players were guilty, of that there is absolutely no doubt. They already made news before the Sugar Bowl with their Five game suspensions starting NEXT year, rather than miss the bowl game/special experience bullshit. Many people were already questioning the punishment's timing...but if its true that Tressel lied, then Ohio State flat out lied to the NCAA.
Knowingly playing ineligible players, and trying to cover it up is the kind of thing that force seasons to be forfeited and coaches to be fired over. If true, this is a big fucking deal. I tend to believe that is true, personally. The reporter that broke the story this afternoon is the same reporter that originally broke the Reggie Bush/USC stuff that turned out to be completely true.
As a Michigan Wolverine fan, I would like to suggest a phrase that Buckeye fans should probably get to know...
"failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance".
