Noticed something interesting

I will make a proper thread on it I think,

in that Rape thread in the cigar lounge, tdigle mentione film and is having a role in satiating curiosity about Rape and Murder meaning people are less likely to do it, yet video games that simulate the same sort of thing are blamed for the rise in violence and all that.

Odd little thing, ain't it. I am going on the basis that it is a common belief, tdigle just made me think of that.

People aren't really affected that much by film or video games imo. If they murder someone, it's not because of those things, they would've done it regardless.

Ya, that doesn't make any sense. They're both forms of media. I guess since you watch people get killed in one and actually kill virtual people in the other it's ok?

It's not really hypocrisy Shadow, films have long been the subject of criticism and censorship, much more so than video games ever did. In Britain particularly, anything remotely offensive or graphic was banned from the country during the 80s.

I would say the difference lies in whom the mediums are targeted to. Video games are more likely to be targeted towards children, who are more impressionable, than movies, which are more likely to be targeted towards adults, at least the ones that feature the violence.

At least, those are the intents.

Add to the fact that with video games you control what happens it's what you think which then takes the action through the controller to the game. Whereby with movies you're sat watching it, you have no control on what happens.
