TNA No Surrender - September 11, 2011

National Anthem - There generally isn't anything super special about the singing of the National Anthem but it was definitely appropriate considering the day. There was focus on Jesse Neal, who's a Iraq War veteran, and Rosita, whose father was killed on 9/11. Just a simple, tasteful salute. Thumbs Up

Jesse Sorensen vs. Kid Kash - This match was to determine the new #1 contender for the X Division Championship. The first few minutes of the match were ok, nothing spectacular, but this match just didn't do anything for me. There was ZERO hype for it, I didn't even know it was added to the card until the show and that's kinda crappy since it's to determine the #1 contender for a title. Overall, not that much to say here except it just seemed pretty sloppy overall. Sorensen winds up getting the win around the 8 minute mark with some sort of botched suplex type thing. This is the guy's 3rd match and he's already #1 contender for the X Division strap. The guy's green as hell and it shows, I'm just not at all seeing what some others see. *

James Storm vs. Bully Ray - In some ways, this was kind of a boring match and not what you might expect from these two. There were practically no bumps, no real brawling and with a very slow pace. At the same time though, it did a good job of selling the necessary storyline for the match. Again, at the same time though, I knew Storm wasn't going over when they said he'd have to win this match via submission to move on. The story the match was telling was a good one but the very cheap and even lamer finish for this match ruined it for me. This deep into the BFG Series, weak DQ finishes just aren't the way to go and the DQ itself was pretty lame. Storm spit beer into the ref's eyes and I can understand that being a DQ finish but I'll almost guarantee that there'll be tons of interference going on in some of these matches that'll happen right in front of a ref and there won't be a DQ in sight. Ray gets the win at the 11.5 minute mark. *1/2

Mickie James vs. Winter for the TNA Knockouts Championship - In some ways this was an alright match and in some ways, it's more of the same crap we've come to expect and that's especially true when Winter is involved. Generally speaking, the action was alright though it was also one of those matches that just seemed to drag on. Winter pulled out the blood mist or whatever you call it twice in the match. The first time she hits Angelina Love accidentally but she has enough left over for Mickie James. Winter gets the win and regains the Knockouts Championship. 3/4*

Mexican America vs. Devon & The Pope D'Angelo Dinero for the TNA World Tag Team Championship - This was just one lousy match, just flat out lousy. The match was generally counterproductive and utterly forgettable, which I think is going to be standard operating procedure unless Mexican America actually gets good or they get the titles off them. And yeah, as I said earlier regarding interference, it was all over the place here. Sarita & Rosita interfered multiple times, sometimes right in front of the ref and nothing happened. Mexican America retains a little before the 10 minute mark after Sarita foils Devon's attempt at a suplex on Anarquia. 1/2*

Matt Morgan vs. Samoa Joe - Finally, a pretty decent match on a card that's been 100% grade A fertilizer thus far. This match wasn't the brawl I was expecting but that's alright, I've got no problem with watching a couple of big guys have a wrestling match if they can actually pull it off. The match told a good story with Joe doing a mix of his signature moves & posturing for the crowd and working on Morgan's arm. Morgan showed some good perseverance by managing to get out of Joe's rear naked choke. I also like that we had a clean ending for the match when Morgan hits Joe with the Carbon Footprint at the 11.5 minute mark. Not a show stealing match but a good solid effort and much better than anything else thus far. **1/2

Bobby Roode vs. Gunner - For me, this match bored the crap out of me and I think Gunner is a reason why. I honestly do not see what TNA sees in this guy and I think the majority of the fans in the Impact Zone would agree. They were extremely quiet throughout this match, I know that's not saying much as it's an IZ crowd, but you get my meaning. Gunner just isn't a strong heel. Kind of a slow, methodical pace for most of the match that generally dragged some of the time. Both men needed to win via submission here and I'm at least glad TNA made the right call here. Roode winds up getting the win at the 12 minute mark after locking in the Fujiwara armbar. Bischoff comes out afterward and tells Roode that he'll face Bully Ray in the BFG Series finals later on tonight. *

Brian Kendrick vs. Austin Aries for the TNA X Division Championship - Very good effort here from both guys with a good, long match. It was also refreshing to see an X Division Championship match this late in the show as it's usually been the curtain jerker in recent ppvs. The match started off with a decent pace that kicked things up about half way through and really got quite good the last 5 minutes or so. There was a nice spot about the 9.5 minute mark in which Aries sends Kendrick over the top rope but misses a suicide dive through the ropes and hits the security railing. There was a pretty sloppy spot about the 11 minute mark when Aries completely misses a corkscrew dive on Kendrick. They get back in the ring and trade some fun moves before the ending. There was some referee incompotence as he was "in the way" when Kendrick went for Sliced Break. Aries hits a low blow then hits the brainbuster at the 13.5 minute mark to become the new TNA X Division Champion. Nice heel way to win the title and making the ref sorta carry him around the ring as part of his celebration was a nice, unique touch. ***1/4

Bobby Roode vs. Bully Ray - I thought this was a very fun match between two guys that have good chemistry. It did a good job of telling the story with Roode coming off as the heroic babyface that takes a beating most of the match. Ray's heel antics during the match also worked and the crowd was definitely into this one. Gives you a good idea how important having a heel who is actually over is. The match was a little slow at times but it was still a very solid outing and, again, it had the right outcome. Roode gets the win over Ray at the 13 minute mark with a spinebuster. Bobby Roode wins the BFG Series and will face the TNA World Heavyweight Champion at Bound For Glory. ***

Sarita Interview - This was a genuinely heartfelt, emotional interview from Sarita as she talked a little about her father and how much he meant to her. Nothing was staged or felt the slightest bit phony about it, nor should it have been. Jeff Hardy needs to watch this and learn how to cut an emotional promo, or at least he needs to study it to maybe get an idea of how he can at least fake it. Thumbs Up

Kurt Angle vs. Sting vs. Mr. Anderson for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship - Like some TNA main events that I've seen on Impact Wrestling, this one had a potential to be great but ultimately fell short. There was some good action and I love the fact that we got a main event that actually went more than 10 minutes but the ending really hurt this match in my view. It wasn't nearly as overbooked as we've seen as the interference, while relatively minor comparatively speaking, was every bit as lame. Sting has Angle seemingly where he wants him before Hogan jerks him out of the ring and sprays him in the eyes with something. Sting sells his eyes burning, climbs back into the ring and locks the referee in the Scorpion Death Drop. Angle hits a low blow, then an Angle Slam to retain the title at the 15.5 minute mark. The spray can interference was lame but I think what ultimately killed this match for me is that it felt like filler. I knew that the title wasn't even remotely in danger and that it wasn't going to be until BFG. **

Overall Show - I thought this was a pretty lackluster and overall forgettable ppv. This is the third TNA ppv I've watched this year and, out of the 3, it was most definitely the worst whereas Destination X was quite fun and Hardcore Justice was pretty solid. The first half of the ppv stunk up the place in my view. The first match was a heavily underhyped #1 contendership match that just felt sloppy. Bully Ray vs. James Storm was disappointing and the extremely cheap finish ruined the match for me. TNA continues to hot potato the Knockouts Championship while Mexican America is...well..Mexican America. I enjoyed Morgan vs. Joe much more than I thought I would. It was a solid match that I think may have come off in my eyes as being better than it was because everything before it had been so bad. Roode vs. Gunner was a snoozefest, but at least Roode went over. The X Division Championship match was the match of the night with a very entertaining effort from both guys with the right result of Aries going over. Roode vs. Ray worked for me, it wasn't as good as the X Division match, but it told a good story and Roode going over was the right call. The main event felt like filler to me, everything about the TNA WHC picture for the last several months has felt that way in my view, but I'm hoping that'll change. Aside from the X Division Championship match and Roode vs. Ray, nothing else really did it for me on the show.

Grade: D+

Three cheap endings involving some kind of spray. I know one of them was actually a face, Storm, trying to pull out the victory, but that still doesn't take away from the lack of originality. There's all kinds of heel tactics out there, use them. And frankly, that leads me to my next point: can we have some more clean finishes please? I hate the notion that Angle (or most wrestlers really) as a face can pin anyone he wants clean, but as soon as he goes heel all his abilities to win fly out the window and he's going to need help for EVERY damn match. 3 way matches are the perfect opportunity for a heel to get a clean win. For example, Sting Death Drop's Anderson, Angle throws Sting out of the ring and steals the pin. Match over. No one on the planet could've been stupid enough to think the title was gonna change hands tonight anyways. But I digress...

Thumbs Up

umm..it was actually Rosita that did the interview not Sarita. it was a 9/11 memorial interview talking about how she lost her father on 9/11 2001.

had true emotion and betrayed Rosita's Mexican America group because it was a heartfelt moment.

most of this ppv was lame but hope it sets up Bound for Glory and a great card. couldn't be happier for Bobby wining the series.

This.^^^^ It is possible to have a heel win clean and still look like a bad guy, who also happens to be a good wrestler. Seems to be forgotten among creative teams.

I actually did not mind the PPV too much. I have not watched a full TNA PPV for some time and enjoyed it to some extent. I really think TNA has a huge problem with match endings..most of the time when I watch a show or a big match the endings are awful and ruin what could have been or was a decent match up. The commentary does not do too much for me either but I have never been a huge fan of Tazz in that particular role. I do enjoy TNA more now than I did not so long ago but not as much as I did in the early days. I do sense a lot of potential and will watch more TNA PPV's in the hope they will iron out the creases they seem to have. I would give No Surrender more than half marks out of ten. It just seemed like a lot of what was happening was done to set up matches in the future and many results were predictable. Overall though I got something out of it and although not great I have seen worse.

No Surrender 2011

National Anthem

This was a very touching tribute for the victims of 9/11, because everything felt so genuine and heartfelt. They put a lot of focus on Jesse Neal, and I thought this was a nice touch. This tribute wasn’t too extravagant, but it was effective, and this was a nice way too start off the show.

Kid Kash VS Jesse Sorensen- #1 Contender’s Match

I couldn’t get into this. Overall, I thought this was a very lackluster match, and the rhythm wasn’t there. It just felt like Kash and Sorensen were going through the motions here, this match did feel sloppy at times, and this opening match was pretty dull. Sorensen is next in line for a shot at the X-Division Championship, but I don’t see anything special in him, because Sorensen’s look is pretty generic and plain. Match Rating- 2/10

Bully Ray VS James Storm- Bound For Glory Series Match

I really enjoyed Bully Ray’s mind games at the start of the match. He wanted to aggravate Storm, and his stalling tactics (going through the ropes and strolling around ringside) were fun to watch. Ray pissed off the crowd, and he did receive some pretty good heat. Although, the bulk of the match was VERY dull. The action in the ring wasn’t worth getting into, and the sluggish pace didn’t help. This match didn’t have a good flow, and I hated the ending. This was a big match. So much importance was placed on the Bound For Glory Series, and they decide to end this one in a DQ? This is how they decide to end a high stakes pay per view match after months and months of wrestling matches and the constant struggle to reach the ultimate prize? Storm’s chase for the gold has ended, because he spit some beer in Ray’s face? This ending just felt so lame and cheap. This was a huge disappointment, and I still can’t believe this finish. Match rating- 2/10

Mickie James VS Winter/With Angelina Valentine- TNA Knockouts Championship

Meh. I’ve seen this same formula enough times already…. Angelina roams around the ringside are, she constantly interferes throughout the match, she causes some sort of distraction, and this distraction allows Winter to spit the red mist/blood in Mickie’s face. I’ve seen this same type of scenario too many times, and it really has become stale now. The match itself was okay. There was some decent back and forth action between these two, and this match did have a steady pace, but I couldn’t get into this. Winter is champion again, but I don’t know how I should feel about this. The two title changes just feel so quick, but Winter could have a chance at a longer run with the belt this time. Match Rating- 3/10

Devon & The Pope VS Hernandez & Anarquia/with Rosita & Sarita- TNA World Tag Team Championships

The final moments in this match did feel kind of silly. Rosita and Sarita received a double team spanking from Devon and Pope, and Sarita helped Mexican America retain the gold, as she held Pope’s leg during Anarquia's pin cover. Overall, I thought this was a pretty decent match. Both teams did showcase some good teamwork, and this match did have a nice flow, but I wasn’t too crazy about the shenanigans at the very end. Also, I’m still not sold on Mexican America as tag team champions. Both men are horrendous on the mic (especially Anarquia), and the bulk of their matches are completely forgettable. Rosita and Sarita can always provide some good eye candy, but I don’t see anything special in Anariqua and Hernandez. Match Rating 5/10

Matt Morgan VS Samoa Joe

Joe and Morgan delivered a very solid match here. This was pretty physical, there was some nice back and forth action throughout this match, and Morgan really didn’t show any ring rust in this match. He was sharp, but where could Morgan go from here? He hasn’t seen any major spotlight for a while, and his injury derailed any plans TNA had for him. Morgan could get back on track, but it’s going to take some time. As far as Joe goes, I’ve enjoyed his character recently. Joe is much better as the full blown bad ass heel, and Joe can be a very believable tough guy, but it wouldn‘t hurt if he dropped some weight. Match Rating-7/10

Gunner VS Bobby Roode- Bound For Glory Series Match

I guess this was a decent enough match. This did feel pretty dull at times, but there was some okay back and forth action here. I actually thought Gunner would be a lock to win this. He’s received a pretty hard push this year, and he is a member of Immortal. Personally, I don’t see anything special in Gunner. He isn’t bad in the ring, but he can be very bland, when it comes to personality, and his mic skills are pretty bad. It’ll be interesting to see where Gunner goes from here. Match Rating-4/10

Brian Kendrick VS Austin Aries- X-Division Championship

Wow. This was very physical, and this match did feature a few high impact/risky spots. There was some solid action here, and this match did have a good competitive feeling. I hate to see Kendrick’s reign come to an end, because he did have a nice run as X-Division Champion, and I LOVE his character, but Aries should be a worthy champion. He can deliver on the mic and in the ring, and he can be a very entertaining heel. Match Rating -7/10

Bobby Roode VS Bully Ray- Bound For Glory Series Final

I’m glad Roode won the match here. Roode has tons of potential, and I’m glad TNA is taking a chance on someone new. Roode’s victory did feel refreshing, and the match was solid enough. The tense stare down at the very beginning of the match did provide one of those goosebump moments. This match featured plenty of anger and intensity. Ray tried to intimidate Roode, but Booby wouldn’t back down, and this was a fierce wrestling match. Both men really wanted a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship and the main event spot at Bound For Glory, and I could really feel the hunger and desperation in this match. Match Rating- 6/10

Rosita

Rosita’s backstage interview with Jeremy Borash did feel very touching and sad. Rosita talked about losing her father on 9/11. He encouraged her to become a wrestler, and Rosita used her past experiences with her father for inspiration. Rosita really spoke from the heart in this interview, she missed her dad, and I did want to feel for her here. Everything felt 100% real and genuine during this interview. TNA and Rosita deserve a lot of credit for this.

Kurt Angle VS Sting VS Mr. Anderson- TNA World Heavyweight Championship

I didn’t have high expectations for this, and this match was very underwhelming. I couldn’t get into this, and I thought this was a very weak main event/World Championship match. This just felt like your standard triple threat match, and I really didn’t see pay per view quality here. Everything just felt so bland and formulaic. I knew the partnership stuff between Anderson and Sting wouldn’t last, and both guys would eventually play the “it’s every man for himself” card. This match couldn’t hold my attention, and I almost fell asleep as I watching this. Also, Hogan’s interference didn’t do anything for me. Yeah, I get it, Hogan and Sting have problems with each other, and this could be another step towards the potential dream match between these two at Bound For Glory. Sting will be pissed, because Hogan stuck his nose where it doesn’t belong, so he’ll have some more fire, when he wrestles Flair, but the thought of a Hogan/Sting match on pay per view in 2011 doesn‘t excite me at all. Match Rating- 3/10

Overall Show Rating 4/10:
Seeing Bobby Roode win the Bound For Glory series was the highlight of the show for me. Roode could become the next World Heavyweight Champion, and Roode could breath some fresh life into the title picture. But overall, I thought this show was pretty weak. This pay per view featured a few good matches, but the majority of the wrestling was underwhelming and disappointing, and there were way too many screwy finishes for me. No Surrender 2011 wasn’t a complete train wreck, but this show just bored me most of the time, and there was a strong feeling of mediocrity here.
