NJPW Discussion Thread

Someone's got to get this ball rolling after that excellent PPV we got given, and considering a lot of people aren't familiar to New Japan's scheduling, this thread might also serve as notice. LDs would be difficult considering the time difference in Japan, but maybe at some of the bigger shows that might be cool.

Anyway, to kick things off is the show they ran the day after Wrestle Kingdom, which was NJPW New Year Dash. Aired on Samurai TV in Japan and on NJPW World as an IPPV, it had a pretty decent day-after-card. Note that bolded equals winners and underline is pinned.

NJPW "NEW YEAR DASH !!", 05.01.2015 (Samurai! TV/NJPWWorld)
Location: Korakuen Hall, Tokyo
Attendance: 1,995

1. TAKA Michinoku & Taichi vs. Tiger Mask & Sho Tanaka
2. Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish vs. Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov
3. Minoru Suzuki, Takashi Iizuka, Shelton Benjamin, Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith Jr. vs, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima, Manabu Nakanishi, Tomoaki Honma & Captain New Japan
4. NWA World Jr. Heavyweight Title: Jushin Thunder Liger (c) vs. El Desperado (1st defense)
5. Ryusuke Taguchi, KUSHIDA & Alex Shelley vs. Kenny Omega, Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson
6. Special Tag Match: Bad Luck Fale & Tama Tonga vs. Kazuchika Okada & Toru Yano
7. Special Six Man Tag Match: Togi Makabe, Yuji Nagata & Kota Ibushi vs. Shinsuke Nakamura, Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI
8. Special Eight Man Tag Match: AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, Doc Gallows & Yujiro Takahashi vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto, Katsuyori Shibata & Tetsuya Naito

Some notes from this IPPV in relation to storyline development (taken from cage-insider, with some thoughts from me):

1. Sho Tanaka is a young lion in NJPW, a cruiserweight (fuck that junior shit) whose been coming along rather well if this opener was any indication. Keep an eye out on him, he might surprise Kenny Omega if Kushida doesn't go for the upset.

2. Jushin Liger retained his NWA World Jr. Heavyweight Championship in the only title defense on the show by pinning Desperado with a brainbuster, despite having to overcome the repeated interference of Tiger Mask. Consequently, Liger chose his next title opponent to be Tiger Mask.

3. Kazuchika Okada's was cleanly defeated by Bad Luck Fale in a tag team match after Fale hit his Bad Luck Fall finisher on Mr. Rainmaker. It looks like Okada is being siphoned off into a feud with Fale as he has to prove himself before getting another shot at Tanahashi. Could be a good thing, though I'm given to understand Fale himself isn't ready for the top of the card and this feud will probably be focusing on rounding him out as well.

4. Yuji Nagata challenged Shinsuke Nakamura to an IWGP Intercontinental Championship match, which Nakamura immediately accepted. Might have been better if he got the opportunity as a result of the New Japan Rumble at the Wrestle Kingdom pre-show, but whatever.

5. Cody Hall (dressed up to look like his Dad during his Outsider days) was revealed as the Bullet Club's new young boy, but he must prove himself first before earning full membership to the band. They need a new jobber and I imagine he'll work six-man matches with Meiyu Tag (Goto/Shibata) from the start.

6. In the main event, The Bullet Club defeated Team Tanahashi when AJ Styles pinned Tanahashi with the Styles Clash, before Styles cut a promo about how Tanahashi had stole the IWGP title from him and he wanted it back.

Not quite the Authority vs. John Cena, is it?

Moving on, New Japan will be running a series of shows in cooperation with CMLL (basically the second biggest company in Mexico, former home of Sin Cara and Alberto Del Rio) throughout the rest of January. Running from the 13th to the 19th, they'll be a mix of televised, IPPV and live events under the Fantasticmania banner, and I'll list them below in a second post.

Hopefully I can keep this going and people who've gotten interested in NJPW keep chiming in. If we've got any puro vets in the forums (I know Papa Pillman is very knowledgable), always feel free to chime in.

Quick update for New Japan!

Alex Koslov (half of Forever Hooligans, the cruiser team with an eye-patch and Russian wool hats), is taking a break from wrestling for the foreseeable future. Word is he's got a few injuries that need healing up, which explains why he ate both pins at Wrestle Kingdom and New Year's Dash. Rocky Romero looks to be working solo for the foreseeable future, and I suspect he might be one of Kenny Omega's challenger in the coming months.

In other news, we've got a trailer for NJPW on AXS TV in the United States:

Reminds me a little of the old Batman show, but whatever, I'm still excited.

New Year Dash was okay, not too intrigued by Okada v Fale or Tiger Mask v Suzukigun members but I think Nagata v Nakamura could be a good feud in the near future. Hopefully Bullet Club loses Scott D'Amore too ASAP, he looks so out of place in the ring with them!

Yeah it was a bit of a surprise but he was still selling his injuries from the night before so I'm assuming it'll lead to a couple of convincing wins for Okada in the near future so they can rebuild him. I'm not sure though if they'll work towards him getting back to another match with Tanahashi for the IWGP heavyweight title or if they'll see him go the route of going for the Intercontinental title. Only thing with that though is that Nakamura is IC champ and aren't they both supposed to be members of CHAOS?

My expectation is that 2015 is going to be the year of Okada's redemption after so big a loss on the big stage. I'm thinking feuds with guys like Fale (hosses who aren't the finished product) are going to be his bread and butter for a while, along with maybe working a few of the veterans. Come 2016's Wrestle Kingdom, he'll be working Nakamura, Tanahashi or Styles over the main title, and I'm very expectant it'll be Tanahashi.

Nakamura wouldn't quite have the same story, but considering they're both Chaos and Nakamura is the leader, there might be something in there if he gets kicked out for having too big a losing streak and that kicks it into high gear for them, but Tanahashi is still the better choice.

It's a bummer about Koslov taking a hiatus, but at least he gave NJPW four months notice to prepare. I assume that bringing in reDRagon and booking them the way that they have is partially a product of the company losing the Hooliganz as a team. NJPW is a little light on juniors right now, and without using reDRagon as they have, the top of that tag division would've belonged solely to the Splitters and Bucks. The loss is surely reDRagon's gain, especially in the pocket book with more big New Japan paychecks on the horizon. I assume Romero can get some work in the junior singles division, which helps as that's where they are really light, and I prefer Rocky as a singles worker to Koslov(had the situation been reversed) by a comfortable margin. But I doubt Romero is anything more than filler going forward, which sucks for him.

I didn't catch New Year's Dash as it seemed like mostly storyline progression with no real must-see action, but I do like some of what they set into motion, and I'm excited for the New Beginning shows, even though they will be heavy(especially Osaka) on title rematches. Believe it or not I find Styles/Tanahashi intriguing, and give AJ a better chance than most, but also wouldn't be surprised to see an angle that starts to put tension between AJ and the rest of the Bullet Club(a botched run-in costing AJ for instance).

Another note is that they just ran an angle where SuzukiGun invaded NOAH, so all of those guys may be exclusively working NOAH shows for the time being, possibly further illustrated by the rumor that Suzuki himself isn't gonna be a part of the 2015 New Japan Cup, but may be feuding with Marufuji for the GHC title.

Damn, I was just about to post about Suzukigun invading NOAH.

"Also expected is more trading of talent with Pro Wrestling NOAH. As noted before, New Japan either has secretly purchased controlling interest in NOAH to keep the struggling company alive, or is at least heavily funding them at this point. GHC champion Naomichi Marufuji and 2013 tag team of the year Mikey Nicholls & Shane Haste worked the Dome show. While they didn’t have the time to really get it over, they worked with New Japan’s Killer Elite Squad (Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Lance Archer) and that seems like a natural program in NOAH for 2015 as plans are for Smith Jr. & Archer to be regulars there. To help strengthen NOAH, the plans look to be that Suzuki-gun (Smith Jr. Archer, Minoru Suzuki, Taka Michinoku, Taichi and Desperado) will be invading NOAH. Suzuki’s win at the Dome over Kazushi Sakuraba may lead to him in the GHC title picture shortly, and back for another main event singles run. "

That's a pretty sizeable chunk of the NJPW roster to tell you the truth (8 guys, all in all) and I'm actually curious about what NJPW is going to do to replace them. Certainly they've got the CMLL guys for the next month, but I'm sort of excited to see what happens next.

Definite incentive to start following NOAH a little bit as well, since I'll be able to recognize a few of the guys.
