Cutting a few tens of thousands or even a hundred thousand dollars from the salaries of the president and congressmen wouldn't really help improve our debt situation much at all.

My thought? You're being silly. In what world does a military private deserve more money than the President of the United States? Not only does he not have the responsibility or the training, he also doesn't have the education nor having to work to keep his job while doing his job, knowing he only has eight years total at the job. And let's not even get into how many soldiers are in the military versus how many Presidents and former presidents we have.

I'm not saying our government officials aren't overpaid, especially considering how little they have to pay their own way, but it certainly makes sense the way it is set up.


The only problem I have is when the government shuts down and the military doesn't get paid, but those responsible for the shutdown do. THAT is wrong, but not the salaries of our elected officials.

As someone who was in the military ill say this, now I don't agree with what our elected officials make but that not here or there I'm going to talk about military pay. What you see there is based on base pay not including heath care cola( cost of living allowance ) bha (basic housing allowance )and your and what they give you in food. Now I'm not saying that military people get over paid I think they deserve every allowance and benefit that they receive. what I don't like is people who try to use the us service member as a propaganda tool like with this post on facebook...

It's more than I make, and I had to pay to make my living.


I agree America doesn't have it's priorities in line when it comes to what should be important, but until people are willing to stop spending billions of dollars a year on their entertainment and instead give it to the government, it's just the way things are going to be.

$38,000 a year sounds right for maybe a Lt. but not a private starting out. Starting out and being in the service for a few years is generally around $20,000 to $24,000 depending on if you have dependents. It would be sweet if every service member was paid close to $40,000 a year though. Congress is overpaid, but that isn't going change. For example, no one is going to pay the players more then the owner.
