Music While Gaming

Well, I think this thread is pretty simple. What kind of music do you listen to when you are playing video games? Is it the same type of music for every game, or do you have certain music that you listen to because it goes with a certain game that you play?

For me, I mostly have Hard Rock, Alternative, Nu-Metal, and just a little bit of Rap.

I noticed a few years ago that when I was playing Halo (1, 2 and 3), Linkin Park was playing, and it set me in the right mood to play. There was something about the sound of Meteora that just sounded right when playing Halo. I don't know how else to say, that Meteora just goes with playing Halo in my view.

But for other games, Call of Duty, NHL 09, or Assassin's Creed for example, that I play mixed CDs on my X-Box 360, of which include, Bullet For My Valentine, The Offspring, Lordi, Metallica, and Papa Roach, just to name a few. I don't know why, those games just don't have a singular one band sound needed in my opinion.

So simply put, I listen to all sorts of Hard Rock, and the others genres I mentioned above. What do you listen to when you are playing video games? Do you have any certain bands or songs that you have to listen to during a certain game?

Mostly I listen to the game's audio, if it's a console game. For handheld games I just plug my iPod in my ears and play. My tastes are extremely eclectic, but I mostly listen to trance and techno, and hair metal. Wrestling themes make good mood music too.

Well I listen to hip hop & i'll blast it all the way up when i'm playin' somethin' like Madden, Grand Theft Auto or Halo on the 360. Now when i'm playin' handheld platforms like the PSP or yes even the Gameboy, i'll put my earphones in my ears & start listenin' to my iPod & just start playin'. I mainly listen to hip hop, but i'll have a little rock music blended in there. Hell even listenin' to some wrestlers theme songs are good to listen to while playin' a game.

when im playing a game like say pro evo, i usually put on something like anthrax or megadeth, not the usual music i like but awesome for gaming too because it's fast and energetic etc

Since im a hip hop person, when i play Saints Row 2 on my XBOX 360 i play the in game music from the radio stations or a custom in game playlist, but i will occassionally play a mix of hip hop and rock on my music player on the console. When i play SvR i play fight music, and when i play Skateboarding games i will play chill out type music and hip hop

I don't really have too much of a particular preference in music while gaming. If i'm doing like a hard mission where I have to kill a buncha muthafuckers or beat a bosses ass, i'll play something heavy. One song that always worked was "White Knuckles" by Five Finger Death Punch. That makes me wanna tear shit apart.

Tell me that's not badass.

Michael Jackson is very relaxing music when you're beating hookers down on GTAIV though. I usually just put a CD in my stereo and blast it. It's whatever, pause button is my friend.

When I'm playing a game that requires a certain mindset or reality to play, the music is very important to me. For example, I'm quite the connoisseur of Fallout 3. The game takes place in a post-nuclear war wasteland. Bob Marley just isn't going to cut it, lulz. For that reason I either listen to really tuba or percussion heavy orchestra, or I take a trip the post-apocalyptic world of Coheed and Cambria.

If I'm playing a game in which I'm killing people, it's needs to be an angry music. KoRn, System of a Down, the like. Something that just gets you riled up.

System of a Down: Aerials. The jackass can't even spell the name of the song right.

If I'm playing a thinking game, calm music suits me better. Bob Marley, The Fray, piano rock boys. Listen to it sometime.

And, finally, if I'm playing a Sports Game college football band songs are the way to go. As such, I refuse to be called anything close to a traitor, so it's all kinds of the stylings of the SEC. Razorbacks in particular. :)

It's really weird, every time I buy a major game release, I get a CD too.
When I played Pokemon Saphire, I was listening to Muse's Absolution.
When I played World of Warcraft for those few weeks, I had just bought Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
And I played through Soul Calibur 2 while listening to Elephant.

I always listen to music when playing through games, except when I know the music will be good or the speech will needed to be heard (Zelda, KOTOR, etc.)

But yeah, I don't have a type of music I listen to when I play games, I just listen to my newest CD while playing my newest game.

Like everyone else, it all depends on the type of game. For racing games, I prefer something high tempo like Godsmack or Metallica. For fighting games, I want heavy and loud. Hatebreed, Otep, and Walls Of Jericho are all good fits. If I'm playing a sports game, it needs to be something that won't put me to sleep, but will be relaxing at the same time. This could be anything from Led Zeppelin to Rush to Stone Temple Pilots.

The only game I play with no background music is Mortal Kombat. There's nothing about that game I don't love, and I enjoy getting the full experience of it...

It really depends on the game & how it portrays getting the play emotionally involved within the game. Some games do not require outside music as it only takes away from the experience designed for optimum enjoyment. For example, anything First Person Shooter really doesn't require any music. The whole atmosphere is supplied with the great sound effects, the music implemented to give the gamer a rush & the ever essential conversations happening that don't have subtitles.

There are games such as sporting games like NBA or Tony Hawk's pro skater where the essential part of the game requires some sort of music to get you in the mood is needed. When skating around aimlessly, you might get bored with the supplied music repeating over & over again, thus unstimulating the mind for creativity. For these games, I usually use the songs I like on the pre-set list or throw together a bunch of adrenaline pumping songs to get me livened up. Sometimes, I might throw on the slow or emotional song to hit some killer lines.

I like to listen to Nu Metal no matter the game, there's always at least one song in this genre that is perfect for the situation. If I'm getting beat, Korn-Falling Away From Me, If I'm kickin' ass in multiplayer Linkin Park-Points Of Authority, killin' enemies like crazy Metallica-All Nightmare Long (I know, its not Nu Metal), boss fight, Disturbed-Stupify or The Game.

Try playing Halo with Kanye West-Golddigger, weird felling.

On a side note, if you wanna play games with your own music collection, try MUGEN, I get an awesome kick out of it.
