Mum Has Child Taken Away From Her

Leaving her child unattended coupled with her heavy drinking spells neglect and her daughter needed to be removed for the child's safety and well-being. How attentive and responsible can the mother be if she’s drunk? She admitted to a drinking problem in the past but said she’s not an alcoholic. Isn't that the definition of alcoholic? Most likely the family court will order some sort of alcohol treatment program before she can get her daughter back. Hopefully she gets counseling to deal with her drinking and other personal problems so she can be a mother to her daughter again. Follow-up checks of the residence and alcohol screening may even be ordered.

I don’t know why the McCanns didn’t have their other two children taken away as they committed neglect by leaving them alone. It sounds like the Portugual authorities have really stepped up their efforts to enforce their child welfare laws, probably stemming from all the criticism they received over the McCann situation. I do wonder though if they might be targeting or applying the neglect law more strongly to visitors to their country more so than natives as the story cites other incidents all involving foreigners.
