Rise Above Hate
Well this thread is mainly for those who watched WWF/E since the mid-90s. Those who have watched how annoying Jerry Lawler is as a commentator. He sticks his nose on everybody's business, always siding with heels and stuff. He even disrespected superstars such as Goldust (calling him a freak), Jake The Snake Roberts (with his alcohol problems) and even feuding with the Ultimate Warrior. Not to mention the flirting sessions with the girls invited for commentary. He is exactly what Michael Cole described him before, always hugging for the spotlight. With watching the current Jerry Lawler, you won't even know how a d*ck he is before.

On the other hand, we all know Michael Cole is annoying as hell. He got a lot of heat when he became the voice of the anonymous GM. He also disrespects some superstars and even bully them such as the current Jerry Lawler, Booker T, and Jim Ross.

So who is more annoying, Jerry Lawler or Michael Cole?

I'll pick Jerry Lawler anytime. Michael Cole can never be as close on how a d*ck Jerry Lawler is before.

While Lawler was a dick it at least worked and was funny. Cole is just annoying. Lawler being a wrestler made more sense for him to pick feuds anyway.

When Jerry was the way he was in the 90's it worked. With the exception of the puppies stuff I thought he was funny and he and jr meshed well together, but if you are asking about the Jerry lawler of today I would rather listen to cole anyday. He is a shell of his former self and appears lost at times to me. When cole says How dare you to anyone i cant stop laughing. Cole is annoying at times but hands down jerry lawler

Lawler. I can get past Cole's annoying heel persona because that's how they scripted him. Maybe some of that is him actually being annoying, but I'd rather pin that on Vince than actually blame Cole's announcing ability.

Lawler's apathy is way worse than Cole's heel character. He's supposed to be a face, and we all know he's one of the better heel commentators in the business. But he just comes across as apathetic, bored, and he's writing-in his lines every single week. I can deal with "Miz is the must-see WWE Superstar" or "Daniel Bryan is such a dweeb!" every single week. I can't deal with "so-and-so just did the most amazing thing I've ever seen. That's never happened before ever, even though it just totally happened two weeks ago". Lawler's over-exaggeration of every single thing he says is SO incredibly annoying and insulting to us as fans. He has no character, he's just a puppet that got bored and can't leave the business.

Cole is FAR worse.

Lawler has never buried a wrestler or a storyline, Lawler isn't trying to get himself over at the expense of the talent, Lawler doesn't quote twitter like it's the freaking Bible, and while he is awful, Lawler has never made me want to switch over to spanish dubbing of the show.

Cole starts off the show all excited and pumped, and then within fifteen minutes everything is awful and sucks and he gets bored and looks at twitter.

Michael Cole by far. He's fine when he's just doing the normal commentating thing, but once he starts his tirades. The yelling, interrupting divas matches, the whole nine, I just want to punch my TV at how annoying he is. It has nothing to do with "he's heel, so he's doing his job if you hate him." I literally hate him, it's one thing to be a heel but it's another thing to just be flat out annoying.

Lawler, back in the day was actually funny when he was a heel. He's not as great these days, but I'd take Lawler over Cole any day.

While Lawler was a dick it at least worked and was funny. Cole is just annoying. Lawler being a wrestler made more sense for him to pick feuds anyway.

Exactly my thoughts. The King's prestige as a wrestler makes up for his antics as a commentator.

However my vote as to who is more annoying also goes to Lawler. The fact that he still competes as a singles wrestler every so often, or takes up a lot of ring time with his limited move-set (in context with wrestling today) in my opinion doesn't provide much of a match and is a waste of valuable airtime; especially during PPVs. Maybe his in-ring appearances should be limited to interferences or complementary to an up coming superstar who needs a push. If a rivalry ensues from this, probably a tag match with The King only having some key moments. Just as long as the majority of the match doesn't include Lawler carrying the bout, it will be more entertaining. His mic skills as a color commentator on the other hand are o.k. i guess. I miss the old days where he'd scream PUPPIES!!!

Cole on the other hand can be a positive draw in a match just as long as he is a rag doll. Regardless if he wins or not, he shouldn't look dominant. It just comes out hella wtf. As a play by play commentator, well he really doesn't do his job properly now does he? but that's how his current WWE persona works at its best. The more he tries to get over at the expense of the other superstars just adds more value to his "rag-doll" facade, without actually hurting the superstar. He doesn't come out as a bully no matter how hard he tries.

So in short, whatever Cole is doing is working for him. It gives him the vintage boo's the company wants no matter how annoying he is. But Lawler matches are just a wast of time in terms of entertainment in this era of pro-wrestling, which for me makes him more annoying than Cole.

I love you Jerry but stay on the mic!

Just a casual wrestling fanatic's opinion :)

Lawler.

Michael Cole genuinely makes me interested, his reactions are almost always perfect and believable for big spots (e.g. When the Miz cashed in on Randy Orton, "OMG its the Miz!" sounded so much better than Lawler, Cole sounded genuinely shocked) Lawler is just dull and boring to me.

Lawler is washed up and needs to retire. He is an absolute piece of garbage and the worst announcer currently in WWE. I just cannot stand the guy.

Michael Cole on the other hand is a fantastic announcer as he plays his role brilliantly and has massive heat.

I hate Lawler so much that he is on my top 5 biggest pieces of shit in WWE list

Lawler is almost millions of times moore annoying than Michael Cole.

Lawler all day with "shut up cole" and other stupid shit. A few weeks ago on RAW when he had a lost voice it was the 2nd greatest raw ever. Period.

Top 5 biggest pieces of shit in WWE:

1. Sheamus
2. Jerry Lawler
3. Big Show
4. Alberto Del Rio
5. John Cena

Top 5 Best in WWE
1. The Miz
2. Cody Rhodes
3. Dolph Ziggler
4. CM Punk
5. Wade Barrett

Why is Sheamus No.1 shit and where's Randy Orton?

I think people are missing the point because he asked about 90's Heel Lawler vs. Current Michael Cole. The heel commentator of Jerry Lawler was highly entertaining, and the current Michael Cole is not bad at all imo. I don't find him annoying, I think he's funny, but I just find it annoying when he has a big segment/match, not his fault thought.

If we are comparing them currently, I find Lawler far more annoying.

More annoying now is Lawler!! Jerry has lost his passion his touch somewhere along time ago!! Cole is funny to me as a commentator!! He draws heat constantly beats up verbally on poor ol D bryan!!! I miss the lawler when he always sided with the heels yah he went too far sometimes but that was the lawler i liked!! Cole is to me like a modern day 90ish lawler!!

These are a few points i'm considering before I decide.

Cole has started doing this "thing" where he just strays away from the match and rambles on and on. He's wasted too much time on Raw with rap battles and the Micheal Cole challenges and even 2 PPV matches. He's supposed to be a heel announcer, not a wannabe heel superstar. He's wasted quality time that could have been utilised for the lower card. This of course is Vince's fault.

Lawler apart from his high pitched exclaims , is nothing. I can't believe he's still on commentary. The whole "I've never seen that before" at vengeance made me lose all the respect I had for him. Atleast in his prime he could wrestle.

So in the end I will have to choose Cole, even though i find Lawler repulsive at times.

P.S BRING JR BACK!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Cole, I find him funny, and he engages the commentary team better than anyone else. Cole is controversial, his opinions make for good commentary, it causes a divide. Back when Jerry was more of a heel commentator in the 90's it worked well with JR's good guy role, but anyone who seriously wants cole out and JR back in his place is a mug, it would be utterly tiresome commentary. Like him or not, cole makes the commentary worth listening to...without him you have Jerry who is just busy eyeing up divas and making daft one lines, Booker who struggles to even spit a sentence out half the time, and Josh Matthews who sounds like every word that comes out of his mouth is being read from a piece of paper in front of him.

If we're comparing them from their respective heel runs, which it sounds like you mean, than easily it's Cole. While Lawler was great at backing heels and could be quite an asshole, at least he was funny and had some sound reasoning behind the things he said. Cole, on the other hand, is pretty hard to listen to. He blathers on and on about basically nothing, and insults anyone who disagrees with him into oblivion. He kills so much of the product that it's frightening, whereas Lawler as a heel was just part of the act. Cole tries to make himself the act. The fact that no one can seem to argue Cole's inane points is one of the biggest problems, as he runs with no checks in place to stop his crap. He needs to be moved, hopefully soon, so we can get an announcer who does the job well.

If you're asking who is better at playing the annoying heel commentator role then definitely Lawler. That's mainly because Jim Ross was excellent at playing the face/straight man who would knock Lawler down or ridicule him and that's what made them such a good pairing. Also Lawler had the reputation as a heel from his wrestling days so when he spoke it sounded naturally heelish and not manufactured.
There are several problems with the Cole character one is that it feels far too forced and this partly to do with all the lines being fed to him by Vince. Secondly is that we've known him so long as the straight frontman that it's hard to accept him in the heel role. And thirdly he doesn't have a Jim Ross/Gorilla Monsoon to work off, Lawler has become lazy and complacent in his role, Josh Mathews is too weak and Booker T just doesn't belong on commentary. To be fair to him though he tries his best in the role he's been given despite it not suiting him in the least bit.

It is unfortunate that Michael Cole doesn't have JR to team with at the booth during his heel commentating run like Lawler had in the 90's. Michael Cole's announcing sounds so forced, it is almost unbearable. Lawler sounded genuine when he spoke as a heel in the 90s. Being a wrestler may have helped that, but the fact that Michael Cole is just so pushy with his commenting makes him far more annoying.

Mr. Cole, shouting all of the time does not make you a good heel commentator.

I hate Jerry Lawler so much though. Get this piece of trash off the announce table. Time for him to retire. Bring JR back and pair him with Michael Cole or have ANYONE announce BUT Lawler. Lawler makes Raw less enjoyable for me by just hearing his voice every week.

As far as Smackdown is concerned I simply do not tune into it because I absolutely despise Sheamus and cannot stand his push. If Sheamus were to become champion and the new face of Smackdown as speculated, I simply put will never watch Smackdown again until he loses the title and is de-pushed or quits or is fired. Cannot stand Sheamus. Why does everyone love this guy so much? His promos are terrible, his gimmick is terrible, and he is nothing special in the ring. I can name 10 other wrestlers right now that are better both on the mic and in the ring than Sheamus and that deserve to be the face more than Sheamus:

1. The Miz
2. Dolph Ziggler
3. Cody Rhodes
4. Wade Barrett
5. Randy Orton
6. Ted Dibiase
7. Kane
8. Christian
9. William Regal
10. Goldust

All ten of the superstars mentioned above are better options to be the face of smackdown. All ten are better on the mic, in the ring and have more charisma. The only reason Sheamus is getting this bullshit push is because he is Triple H's gym buddy. Its sickening.

I rather enjoy Michael Cole.......

I am ok - dislike Jerry Lawler.......

I am VERY pleased when i see both of them joking with each other and smiling.....
because they still bash heads a lot, but those rare moments i kinda like....

Lawler WAS a lot better as a commentator as a heel, as a face he's so annoying... the funny thing is, it actually sounds more forced for him to be a face (makes you wonder if he's a real dick in real life). As for Cole, he is just annoying as a heel, if anything things should have been switched with Cole being the face and lawler the heel. I know some people tend to think Cole helped DB get over, but I think Lawler as a heel could have really gotten him over. Lawler came up through the territories so he could have had a bone to pick with DB over really paying dues (just throwing some ideas out there for a feud, not saying it's true), but instead they went with Cole calling DB out as if Cole is shit, it just didn't make sense and was annoying. So my vote is definitely going with Cole being more annoying, both kayfabe wise and in reality, and he's annoying in a way that I feel is not helpful to the product.

Michael Cole takes the cake for "Most annoying." For a while now, I was in between the fence on if Michael Cole was one of the best heat magnets, or just plain annoying. And after the WWE gave Jack Swagger Cole as a part-time manager it was proven Cole's heat is just the build up of listening to him talk for 2 hours.

Cole's best work was perhaps a day after King beat him in a kiss my foot match. And that was because he toned it down a lot after being humbled on T.V. It was nice listening to commentary with contradicting opinions without the two going on a verbal tirade on who's stupider. But recently Cole has not been able to control himself, in the middle of matches he is constantly trying to put himself over Superstars like Zack Ryder and Daniel Bryan. When it comes down to overall commentary, it is constantly ruined by either Cole insulting Booker or Lawler, or he is ranting about how much disdain he has for whatever face is wrestling in the match.

Michael Cole is far more annoying than Lawler. Even though Lawler sucks compared to several years ago, he is still tolerable as an announcer. Cole is beyond annoying. There is nothing wrong with an announcer siding with the heels, but Cole's the more annoying of the two because his actions come off as WWE trying to make him as annoying as humanly possible. They take the heel role way too far with him when all he needs to be doing is side with the heels and support The Miz without acting like a fanboy.

This is my first post here and i was actually going to post something about this after I was watching some old school wwf from the 90's and the same question hit my mind. Lawler was really annoying during some of the matches I was watching wish I could remember them exactly. I think if anyone who is hating Cole and didnt watch Raw back then should and see that The King was just as bad if not worse. King also seems to forget he used to be a wrestler and didnt he cheat a lot to win and seems to forget that at least Booker hasnt. Thanks for reading my post and be gentle it is my first time. . .

I like the heel Lawler. I'm not a big fan of his current persona. That said I can't stand heel Cole. He isn't a terrible announcer, just an overzealous heel.

Also anyone remember the promo Lawler cut on Goldust where he called him a ***? That would not fly today

I find Lawler more annoying right now. He is obviously not into it. That annoys me. Cole is annoying too but lawler is just...man. Its like he doesnt give two shits. I'll take booker over him any day.
