MMA in the Bar room!! *In memorium of JMT and TDigs' thread*

Mighty NorCal

SHALL WE BEGIN?
What the hell happened? There are like 3 people who talk MMA around here now. I feel like now that I have finally watched enough to be familure with fighters and promotions, the fad sort of died off and no one watches it anymore.

Anyways, since so few people seem willing to post non spam about the sport, lets have a go here

Did anyone else feel like Bellator's show on friday was little....TOO good?

Shamrock and Kimbo being involved also makes me suspicous.

Suspicious of what exactly?

Ok, ill say it

that the show is a work. that Main Event friday was fucking absurd. I can't understand how it went the way it did between two professional fighters. Liam had him in a submission hold that would have been a finish in any UFC fight like over ten times.

Literally, the announcers were keeping count.

I've thought a worked MMA show could be an interesting idea. As long as the results aren't leaked, why not?

Its kind of what I understand a lot of promotions over in Japan did in the early to mid 90s, were Ken Shamrock got his start

Basically, from what I could gather from him making extremely broad, general statements about how it worked, they knew who would win, but that was it. Go crazy and beat the shit out of each other in the mean time.

It didnt make a lot of sense. How do you avoid knocking someone out? Or their limbs snapping.

All I know is Emmanuel had like, 12 submission escapes from shit that was practically locked in. I could NOT fathom that his opponent was simply that incompetent were he could HAVE HIM, and let him get away so many times.

I didn't see the match in question, but that in itself isn't necessarily a giveaway, I remember Bendo/Cowboy 1 from WEC 43 where Cerrone had a guillotine so deep in the first round that it didn't seem possible for Benson to not go to sleep, and in the last round he had a series of armlocks where I thought he was taking Bendo's arm home with him and somehow Henderson managed to survive every one and "win" the fight. So sometimes those types of freak things happen and when someone doesn't panic out of instinct like Zingano did Saturday night.

But ever since the soft reboot for Bellator, a lot of what they're doing feels like its starting to walk a line closer to pro wrestling, but I'm still not convinced they're presenting fully worked fights- but to be fair I have watched the product very scarcely since Coker came on board to create "Bellator-Force".

Oh, let me be clear I fucking LOVE them incorporating Pro Wrestling elements, however, if they begin showing worked fights, then it sort of ruins the whole thing.

So did you feel Zigano tapped out of instinct? Becuase I thought it looked like her arm was about to snap in half, personally.

It's hard to tell because that is such a unique armbar angle, but I think Cat said it best when she was talking to Joe after the fight and said "It was in, but it wasn't in". She seemed to feel like she wasn't in jeopardy yet of having her arm snapped, and therefore could've maybe fought it for at least a few more seconds, but she was tapping before she could even logically stop herself. It's tough to second guess someone in that situation when it's not your arm at risk for a compound fracture, but I've definitely seen guys find ways to escape holds that looked too deep to survive, just by keeping their wits and refusing to tap.

Is Rumble Johnson going to beat Bones Jones?

Very much looking forward to that fight. Also looking forward to Cerrone hopefully getting a title shot, and of course the Mcgregor title shot.

My entire opinion of Mcgregor will be shaped by how that fight goes.

I'm not a fan of McGregor, but I'd change my tune if he can beat Aldo. And I have to give Rumble a chance on freak power, but nothing else. I still don't think there is much in the way of a real threat to Jones in the division assuming he gets through Johnson. In fact I think the three heavier class champions are sitting pretty safe right now, as no one at 185 should be able to take the belt off Weidman, and until Bones moves up Cain should be in the clear as well.

While I think Dodson will eventually unseat Mighty Mouse, Dillashaw needs to hope he can avoid Assuncao for as long as possible, I still feel Hendricks is superior to Lawler even if he gets through Rory, and 155 is the same as always- there are a handful of guys that can all beat each other on any given night, and Pettis isn't immune to that.

You're really getting into it at a good time Norcs because 2012-2014 really sucked for MMA. 2015 is already a better year than those 3 put together.

BTW, I don't think Bellator was a work Friday. Every fight stunk besides the main event. If they wanted to work us then the whole show would have been good.

What made those years so bad? The lack of star power at the top/lack of entertaining fights?

It felt like every card got fucked due to an injuries. So many big fights canceled, so many undercards ruined.

Not to mention with the Fox/FS1 deal, the more cards UFC shelled out, the shittier cards they became. All it took was one injury to ruin a card. Thankfully though it seems like the UFC has learned their lesson and now they're going back to having 2 to 3 big fights every pay-per-view show.

Yeah it does seem like there's a show every single week now. That stacking cards strategy seems to be helping though as this past Saturday could have been a disaster if they hadn't had two main events set.

If Anthony Johnson beats Jon Jones, I'll have full faith in UFC.

Daniel Cormier's rise and fall was terrible. This 5'10 guy can knockout and rag doll anyone in LHW and HW divisions (were all his opponents were Jones height and 30-40 lbs heavier,) but then he can't take Jones down, which Gustaffson (a non-wrestler) could? He's gone to decision a bunch lately, but for him not to be able to take Jones down after doing it to so many vets young in his career... it's annoying.

Gustaffson beat Jones on points but didn't win title. And then he got caught by Rumble after dispersing of so many fine shorter strikers before hand.

For me, something is fishy and I see Jones defeating Anthony Johnson and retaining his title. I'm not exactly saying the fix is in, but the writing is usually on the wall.

Instances where it wasn't was Dillashaw beating Barao, but now we're seeing that fight again aren't we?

Btw, anyone find out reason Jon Bones tested for abnormally low testosterone before his rehab?

Jones won the Gus fight.

Even though JMT and myself gleefully mocked this fight, serious question

Even at 51 years old, Ken Shamrock is going to fucking embarass Kimbo Slice right?

Lol, it feels funny to even make a serious comment about the fight but here it goes...

The fight's going to start off with Ken Shamrock shooting for a takedown. If he gets that takedown, he should be able to submit Kimob with ease. If he doesn't though, it will only take one punch from Kimbo to put Ken's lights out.

The fight will definitely be decided in the first minute, that's all I can say for sure.
