MitB Defense Question

Klown_Karnage

Slapstick Heavyweight Champion
Alright, this matter has actually been preying on my mind for some years now and Money in the Bank getting its own PPV as well as Del Rio cashing his in recently and Daniel Bryan making a big thing about saving his for Wrestlemania has brought it back to my mind. Allow me to explain my train of thought and maybe the Wrestlezone community can shed some light on this.

We all know how Money in the Bank works. We all know that every official cash-in has been successful up to this point (usually due to the fact that the champion has already been beaten down or is exhausted from a match.) We also know how championships are won and lost...by pinfall or submission unless otherwise stated in the contract.

However, that also brings to mind a major defensive technique which many heel champions have used over the years, that of incurring a disqualification on either side in order to retain the title, whether or not they lose the match. We've seen it before many many times.

My question is this: If a champion can retain a title through a disqualification, why does he not do it in order to keep the title or at least buy some recovery time when MitB is cashed-in? It wouldn't be that hard to do even for an exhausted or disoriented wrestler. A blatant eye-jab or low-blow, grab a chair and put it to use, slap the ref in the face, anything. Yet we've not seen this happen yet. I know that both the championship and the briefcase are merely props to carry the story, but are we simply to believe that the champions, even the heel ones, are too honorable (or stupid) to use this very cheap tactic in order to retain? Also, if a heel (and I think it would have to be assumed that it would be a heel to use this tactic) were to disqualify himself in order to retain against a MitB cash-in, how much heat would that generate? Would people sit up and take notice or would it simply be passed off as "business as usual"?

Please discuss. I'm curious to hear what others think about this and whether I'm the only one this has occurred to.

They may well do this at some point. Maybe with a face MITB winner a heel champ as a way to start a new rivalry. Showing that even though they were a face trying to cash in and take the easy root the Heel character took a heel-ish root out thus keeping the status quo correct for a rivalry.

A few times the matches have been voided due to interference so i don't know if they would void the match as they have done such as when umaga repeatedly attacked CM punk.

I spouse completely depends on the way the want the aftermath to go really.

i'd say this is usually because the person cashing in mitb is viewed as the heel in the situation. after all he is taking the "easy way". hell punk originaly turned heel because he cashed in on a very over jeff hardy. but this would be interesting to see. i wonder if the person cashing in mitb would get another opportunity or just be screwed over becasue of the rules/situation. good theard

TBH I was sure Orton would be the guy to do this. Like you said baby faces are too honourable to do it and so far the only time someone cashed in who wasn`t or became a heel was cm punk and that was only bc Edge was soooo evil. Still Orton is the one Babyface who could have gotten away with it, at least thats what I thought before miz became champ.

The main reason is because wrestling is scripted and requires a suspension of disbelief, and using a MITB briefcase - which is in itself a prop to get people to buy into the product - in this manner would be a complete and utter waste of time.

everyones post to this has been good. I agree with whom ever said because its been heels cashing in though, with the exception of cm punk on edge, and at that point edge took a beating from batista and was batista bombed so didnt have the chance to get dq'd or counted out, it may happen in the future, and if it does the MiTB winner would likely get a rematch because theyd own a DQ or countout win over the current world champion. W over world champ in most cases = title shot or rematch of a title shot, but it would be a set match the 2nd time around and not a use of mitb

Yes they could cause a DQ to lose the match but to retain their respective championship cause that's what I would do. But they would get a shot at the title when everyone rested and not cheaply. Rob Van Dam was the only MITB winner so far to won it somewhat fairly due to the rules of the match. Plus I've got a question to add.
What if Daniel Bryan won the 2012 Royal Rumble while still holding the Smackdown! MITB briefcase and chose the WWE HW Champ which is Raw and won the WWE Title at WM and cashed in and won the World Championship which is Smackdown! to Unify the World Titles. Just a curiosity you know. Could "The American Dragon" be the guy who unifies the WWE HW and WWE World Championships. He was trained and groomed by 1 Hall Of Famer and 1 Future Hall Of Famer which are Shawn Michaels and William Regal respectively. What do u people think about that?

I've actually posted something similar to this a long time ago in regards to unifying the titles. I think this could work in the future.

As far as the topic. I think the MITB winner will still get a title shot later due to storyline. So the rub the cash-in gives would be diminished.

Surely whoever that gets their title shot wasted like that would get a rematch, the brass wouldn't let somebody win the briefcase if they didn't think that the winner wasn't ready to be the champion. Having the champion actually get purposely get DQed is a fun idea though. But I think the reason why it hasn't happened yet was because all the cash ins so far were on champions that were too tired are surprised to do anything about it.

For a champion to pull off the self-DQ or countout on the Money in the Bank cash-in, he would have to be a heel. The only heel champion that was cashed in on was Edge and he was out cold and was picked up for the GTS in 5 seconds. Randy Orton was a face at the time and he put up a valiant fight which made people think he might win at the moment.

For Daniel Bryan, I actually could see him losing his MITB cash-in at WrestleMania. I don't see him winning the Royal Rumble unless he lost his MITB briefcase. Having one guy take two main event spots would be a waste because there are some superstars who deserve a spot. It would be cool if he won the Rumble, lost his World Title match at WM28 and then afterwards cash it in for a rematch right away and win it. If WWE is going to unify the titles, it shouldn't be at WrestleMania because with a title unification it counts as two good title matches for the biggest show of the year. If they did this at Summerslam or Survivor Series, It would be huge and they still have a solid card under it to make the event just as big and important as WrestleMania.

The reason why this does not happen is because faces are honorable to the extent of being stupid. The MITB has generally been cashed in on babyfaces and babyfaces always believe in being fair and just even when they are cheated against. Faces also have a tremendous faith in their ability unlike heels who conspire and cheat to get their way. Faces believe that their ability can solve any problem for them. This has always been the case in wrestling though I would say that the presence of antiheroes like Austin, Orton and Punk have diluted this aspect a bit. If the scenario that the OP mentions were to come true, I think that you would either need a heel or an antihero babyface.

A heroic babyface like Cena, however, would never do such a thing and I guess we should not question it either. That is because there have always been small logical loopholes in wrestling and as a fan, I guess it is our responsibility to look over such things and enjoy the bigger picture.
