This song was from the making of the "Invincible" album, but wasn't released until Michael Jackson The Ultimate Collection came out and was apart of the bonus unreleased material.

This song was originally recorded as part of the "Bad" album but was cut. It has a very James Brown feel to it, but you can tell it's definitely all Michael too.

This song was originally recorder for the "Off the Wall" album but was cut in the final editing process. Most feel it should have been included.

THIS IS THE BIG ONE.

During the making of the highest selling album of all time "Thriller" numerous songs were tooled and tweaked. What you start with might not be what you finish with and such was the case when it came to the actual song "Thriller".

At this point the album was still very much a work in progress, and Michael wanted this to be the most personal album ever, his first real solo album where he just did what he wanted and that's exactly what he ended up doing for the most part. He and Quincy Jones at this point had been working with another idea, the "Thriller" song and concept wasn't even there. Michael had made quite easily his deepest and most personal song to head the album and share it's name "Starlight".

"Starlight" was the original idea for the "Thriller" album. Michael had written this song and he and Quincy Jones collaborated on the beat. After actually putting the whole song together, Quincy Jones suggested to Michael that they change the name of the song and thus the album and take it in a different direction. It was a very personal song, but Jones had suggested to Michael that "Starlight" wouldn't be a strong enough song to carry the album and didn't quite catch the feeling they were trying to get. Taking that advice Michael and Quincy soon came up with the name "Thriller"and made some minor changes to the beat.

"Thriller" was still every bit as personal and deep as "Starlight" but told in a different way. It has been said that this song was actually about his father Joseph. This fact is much more apparent in the "Starlight" version of this song, but if you listen to "Thriller" again and listen to what he is saying you get it. He's essentially talking about growing up in the nightmare that was his family as a result of his dad. But, before "Thriller" there was "Starlight".
