Mallrats and the View Askewniverse

Stickstar 16

I might just go extreme on you!!!!
First of all who knows what i'm talking about?

Second of all, i'm just wondering what people thought about those movies that came out of the the View Askewniverse.

I already own a copy of mallrats but when the time comes that i have the spare cash to buy more dvds which of the other titles if any would you recommend to me, and what did you think of the work of Kevin Smith.

I personally found both Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back to be amusing and entertaining in different ways, Dogma was great and funny, but i really don't know much about the other ones. Care to help me and fill me in, as well as putting forth your like or dislike of these movies and their Director Kevin Smith

Dogma was great. I loved Chasing Amy, as well, if you want a more serious one.

Yeah, Jersey Girl was a big steaming pile of shit. I loved dogma Doc, but my favourite is probably Mallrats, Jason Lee steals the show with his portrayal of Brodie, the lovable smart alec bum. I'm keen to see clerks, but at the same time, i was not the biggest fan of the characters of Dante, or Randal, but i guess i could always let it go and see if i can enjoy it, well maybe Jay and Silent Bob will bring it home for me, i love the pure stupidity of their characters, always make me laugh.

Clerks is an excellent film, one of my all time favorites. Just listen to the dialogue. Clerks II: also awesome, but has more immature humor in it. Still good though, I recommend both. My favorite out of 'em all is Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, which of course you've already seen.

All his films are great. Even Jersey Girl....if only for the Sweeney Todd bit. However, I'm glad he stoppped the Askewniverse with Clerks II. As funny of a movie as that was, it was nowhere NEAR the greatness of the original.

Well actually Sly, i've been waiting for someone, be it yourself, or X or anyone to come shit all over these movies and Kevin Smith, personally I don't find him to be the best, but his movies somehow get this cult status and following for some reason, and i just enjoy watching them for a laugh.

So please come and critcally assess his work if you want to, i think it'd be fun to see what people have to say about him in defence.

I love most of his movies. Dogma was one of the movies (along with The Rainmaker) which made me fall in love with Matt Damon's work.

But, this thread just comes up all the time, and it's starting to get a little old.

All good, i never really noticed before, this probably should have been put in the movies section anyway, but i wasn't really that alert when i was posting. I usually look a little harder before posting threads, and i was secretely hoping to see someone not like them for a bit of a debate. I agree with you, Dogma was good.

Jay and Silent Bob was funny, but not good. Chasing Amy was actually two movies...the first movie was Affleck chasing the girl, and the second was when he caught her. The first movie is good...the second sucks royally.

As a whole I really can't get enough of Kevin Smith's work.

My Top 5 Smith Films:

Clerks
Mallrats
Chasing Amy
Dogma
Clerks 2

The dialogue in his movies is to me, realistic. Probably what draws me most to Smith and Tarrantinos movies. How my friends and I talk, that's how they talk. Random bullshitting about movies, music, tv, comics, friends, girls, etc etc. Nothing is taboo, nothing is held back, speaking our minds. Going beyond what most would consider normal.

"Archie is not fucking Mr. Weatherbee! He's just trying to help him with his homework!"

- Banky (Chasing Amy)

But as for which to watch, start with Clerks. Witty, sharp, smart dialogue about daily bullshit.

Then hit up Chasing Amy. More serious than Clerks or Mallrats, but has some of the funniest scenes of all three, in the first half of the movie. It slowly becomes more serious and bizarre, but is every bit as good as his first 2 films.

Finally....

Dude, I love Matt Damon in almost every movie he's in. He gets a bad rap for associating with Afleck, but honestly, I love the Bourne movies, Dogma, Rounders....all of them.

Hell Yeah, Damon is the shit.

School Ties
Good Will Hunting
Dogma
Rounders
Oceans Eleven & Thirteen (Twelve gets no love from me, but not his fault)
The Rainmaker
The Departed
Syriana
The Good Shepard (Love this movie)
The Bourne Trilogy
The Talented Mr. Ripley (Underrated movie)
Saving Private Ryan
The Legend Of Bagger Vance

Plus he has a ton of great cameos in a bunch of films.

Great actor, one of my personal favorites.

I guess I'll be the one that comes and shits on them, then.

I'm not saying Kevin Smith's movies are shit. I'm just saying they're not that good either. Clerks was his best, and even that was just a cute diversion. There just wasn't anything to it... it was funny at times, the dialogue was good at times, and the characters were likable at times but that's all there was. It was just a day in the life of two dudes, with no substance to speak of.

It goes downhill from there, with varying degrees of suckitude. Mallrats just plain wasn't funny, and Shannon Doherty sucks the soul out of everything she touches. Chasing Amy was ok I guess, if you're into lame romantic comedies. Jay and Silent Bob was one big star-studded dick joke, and I didn't even see Jersey Girl or Clerks 2 so I can't comment on those. Dogma was good I guess, but it tried a little too hard to make a point.

Overall, yeah. Not a fan.

First off...if we're going to have a contest on who loves Matt Damon more, I guarantee you fuckers will all lose. I'm willing to have gay sex with the man...seriously. He's that awesome.

So back off my man.
