"Macho Man" Randy Savage hanging around with Sting in the Rafters in early 1997

I never really understood the whole thing with Macho Man coming back in early 1997 and suddenly started following Sting around in the rafters. Almost on every Nitro for two months every time Sting would make an appearance Macho Man would be with him acting mysterious.

Eventually Macho Man would join the nWo and reunite with Miss Elizabeth but was there a point to this storyline? Given that Savage was only in a working relationship with her, as they already were divorced five years ago back to 1992. I was always wondering were there original plans for Sting to form some type of Dark army against the nWo and Macho Man was the first member or at least some type of dark dynamic duo with Sting and Macho Man and they just decided to drop it?

I was always confused by this storyline lol.

I probably believe it was to start a stable called Sting's Army. It would have been an anti-WCW, an anti-Horseman, and an anti-NWO group. It was supposed to include Sting, Macho Man, The Steiner Brothers (Scott Steiner and Rick Steiner) and Diamond Dallas Page w/Kimberly Page. But they dropped the angle very quickly. Sounds pretty sweet on paper.

The idea was that the three-team match at Uncensored would be the NWO team, the WCW team, and Sting's team. Sting's team of course would have been him, Savage, DDP and Scotty Steiner, which is what it was setting up.

There's no telling what initially was planned for that, Sting and Savaged palled around in the rafters and crowds for a few weeks, then Sting was back on his own like nothing happened. Classic WCW to nix a plan without any explanation. Probably was leading towards a team buildup at some point because Sting had intimidated and handed his bat to a handful of guys before turning his back, Savage, Steiners, Page, Luger and the Giant. WCW had a habit of starting something and then just completely abandoning it during that time, probably Hogan's doing "oh no brother the spotlight is moving away from the nWo better add savage to the team"

@dsotm5150 Sting's Dark Army would've been way cooler than Team WCW. Considering that Sting, Savage, Elizabeth, DDP, Kimberly and The Steiner Brothers are all way cooler than Luger, Giant, Flair, Piper, JJ Dillon and Harlem Heat (Booker T & Stevie Ray w/Sherri + Jacqueline).

After all, DDP and Savage were both faces at the same time for a little bit before Savage shortly thereafter joined the nWo by betraying Piper to do so. Miss Elizabeth (assuming that she's not in the nWo) probably would've been another woman in the potential Sting's Dark Army anti-hero face lineup, with zero heel heat and inability to play the heel to a T like Sherri did. Maybe Savage was close to mending the fences with Elizabeth for real, that they were almost set to get back together again as a couple. Definitely would've been nice to see Elizabeth back with Savage again, thus she would've never ended up with Luger in 1999 in the first place.

WCW was throwing around so many storylines at that time that would start one week and the next week it would be like it never happened as the people involved would be in a into a new angle. I have to blame their lack of consistency as one of the reasons leading to their eventual downfall. Having active wrestlers booking could have been part of it.

Ummmmm the storyline was that Savage was a mole. He hung around with Sting to basically try and infiltrate on behalf of Hogan. Then Savage turned heel and joined the nWo.

How did you guys miss that? It was pretty obvious that Sting was going around trying to figure out who he could trust and who he couldn't because he felt betrayed at Fall Brawl by the people who he trusted the most (Lugar, Flair, AA).

When your 1997 Team WCW lineup features Lex Luger and The Giant as your main leaders, you know there's a reason why the nWo w/Hogan, Nash, Hall, Bischoff and Savage were way cooler and far more powerful than the babyface Team WCW side, you know you're bound to lose. And when Luger, Flair, Piper, JJ Dillon and Giant are your WCW leaders, then you have Sting, Savage, Elizabeth, DDP, Kimberly and The Steiner Brothers who are all way cooler than the likes of Luger, it doesn't look logically reasonable for a pro-Team WCW group to overcome the odds against Hogan.

Team WCW (lawful faces): Luger, Giant, Flair, Arn, Piper, Harlem Heat w/Sherri, JJ Dillon
Sting's Dark Army (chaotic faces): Sting, Savage, DDP, Rick, Scott w/Elizabeth and Kimberly (maybe DiBiase)
nWo (heels): Hogan, Nash, Hall, Bagwell, Norton, Syxx, Ray Traylor w/Eric Bischoff and Vincent

I really think a lineup of Sting, Savage, DDP, Rick Steiner, Scott Steiner, Miss Elizabeth and Kimberly would make a superb chaotic face group representing Sting's Dark Army, basically playing the faces who ambush referees, authority figures, Team WCW, Four Horsemen and the nWo. The closest we've ever seen is when Sting got stripped of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship Belt after controversial defenses against Hogan by JJ Dillon, although Sting spoke his first words since September '96 and said to JJ Dillon "You got no guts!" then to Hogan "And you, you're a dead man."

I probably believe Sting would've more likely trusted Savage, DDP, The Steiners, Elizabeth and Kimberly more than Luger, Giant, Flair, Piper, Booker, Stevie Ray, JJ Dillon, Sherri and Arn. It did make sense that Sting wouldn't trust full-WCW guys like Luger after Fall Brawl '96 because they falsely accused Sting of being nWo when in reality the nWo created a divisive force against Team WCW via nWo Sting, not to mention, the likes of Luger, Giant, Flair, Piper, Booker, Stevie Ray, JJ Dillon, Sherri and Arn Anderson were all old-school heels to begin with.
