Liberty and Law Open for everyone

FromTheSouth

You don't want it with me.
This thread is for the debaters only. It opens immediately and closes at 6:00 PM CST on Friday. Debaters may switch sides if they both agree and must PM me their agreement.

ST will be affirming the topic and NSL will be negating it.

Resolved: Liberty is more precious than law.

Liberty - the power of choosing, thinking, and acting for oneself; freedom from control or restriction

Are we able to live in a world where "liberty" rules over "law"? No. With liberty reigning supreme, we would essentially be living under anarchy. Murderers, rapists, kidnappers, and gang-bangers would all be allowed to roam the streets, because there would be nothing to define what is right, and what is wrong.

Look at just the last 10 years. The DC snipers...The London bus bombings...9/11. The people that committed, and planned, these events would all live unpunished. By having a system of laws, we can punish these criminals, and work towards preventing future crimes.

Laws help shape us from the moment we're born, and guide us through our lives until we die. As we grow and learn to understand the laws, we learn right from wrong, what to do, and what not to do. Without them, we wouldn't be the way we are, and would lack what makes us human.

Life is characterised by law, we wouldn't be a society without it. From the extreme thoughts such as having murderers running free in society, to the less extreme but still damaging acts of commiting fraud, 10 year olds buying cigarettes and speeding down a motorway at double the speed limit. Everything is made safer by laws, and we can go about our daily business feeling confident we're not going to be shot or mown down by a truck.

Liberty is a great idea, but there should definitely be boundaries; if what you're doing affects someone else for example. That's why we need law.

I think you hit the nail right on the head right there. too much liberty and human nature takes advantage of your generosity. to little and the people will riot. it just needs the right amount of CONTROL. Religion even has laws to govern itself. without law society would just crumble.
