There are several similarities between Angle and Hogan, however, I believe that the difference outweighs enough to end the comparison.
First of all, Hogan was brought in by Vince McMahon to be the flag bearer of the company. Angle's role seems more to coach the younger guys. He seems to be like the two most recent incarnation of Ric Flair in WWE. He was rewarded with a championship, even recognized as a world champion. He is big in Japan. Both of these are Flair contributions as opposed to Hogan. (Yes I realize Hogan was big in Japan, but nowhere close to Flair.)
Secondly, Hogan was built as the "future" whereas Kurt Angle is being built as the present. Angle is also being used to show the fans there is an alternative that even the wrestlers feel is superior. Where Hogan was the flag bearer of the nationalization of the sport, Angle is leading a split. Hogan was trying to combine audiences of several local promotions, whereas Angle is trying to demonopolize the business, much like Steve Austin did during the Monday Night Wars.
Angle can be compared to several "flag-bearers" but I don't think Hogan is the one.
