King or Queen of the covers

Dowdsy McDowds

Sally was here
While I know we have a thread for people to share their favourite cover versions, I wanted to know if anyone has an artist or group whose covers you feel are the best.

To get things rolling, I'd put forward Jeff Buckley as a potential King of the covers. Hallelujah gets the most recognition as far as being his most popular and well known song, as well as being a fantastic cover of Leonard Cohen's original.
2 more covers appeared on Buckley's Grace album; Lilac Wine and Corpus Christi Carol, with both efforts given his twist and sounding very recognisable in their own right. Another cover eventually made its way onto his second album Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk and has been covered by a whole host of other talents over the years, Satisfied Mind.
Jeff's vocal range suits this song beautifully as he goes from soft and tender to strong and passionate during the course of the song to, again, set his version out from amongst the rest. It seemed to suit Jeff so well that it was also chosen to be played at his funeral.

Jeff Buckley is my pick, whose yours?

I am not to sure as if I have a true pick. Metallica's cover album was really good. They put their own spin to covers and make them their own. They do a great job with covers. Hell, as much as I love Turn The Page by Bob Seger, Metallica's version is just a little bit better to me. They are my personal favorite band to do covers.

Another album of covers that is pretty good is, Gun's N Rose's, The Spaghetti Incident. Along with a heavier cover album I'd have to go with Hatebreed's For The Lions. That has some sold good covers on it.

Now for good solo covers, I'd have to say Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes, is really good. Shinedowns cover of Simple Man is another awesome cover song. Trivium's Master of Puppets is a great cover too.

Mike Patton/Faith No More

The guy has done some amazing covers in his time.

Easy (Lionel Ritchie)
I Started A Joke (Bee Gees)
Spanish Eyes (Done by Elvis and others)
Reunited (Peaches And Herb)
This Guys In Love With You (Herb Alpert)
War Pigs (Black Sabbath)
Any Chuck Mosley Faith No More song.

Heck he's done a cover of Poker Face by Lady Gaga

And the thing about Patton is he makes the covers distinctive. You can tell he's paying homage to the original while doing his own spin on it. And the range of covers, going from Black Sabbath to Lionel Ritchie seems strange, but Patton pulls it off with ease.

It is hard to argue with Jeff Buckley, especially after you listen to his hauntingly chilling cover of Hallelujah.

I will throw out a name that I think deserves mention. Richard Cheese. For those not familiar with him, he and his band, Lounge Against the Machine, do lounge versions of a lot of different songs. They do record some original music, but listening to a lounge version of Baby Got Back is hilarious. Their cover of Down With the Sickness was featured in the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake.
