Busy gettin' brain like Krang
For those who don't know, today is the birthday of late, great J Dilla. For many, including myself, he was a huge influence/inspiration. I started making music because of him.
J Dilla is hands down the most influential producer of the past 15 years. We lost him 5 years ago and the game has never been the same since. And he DID in fact change my life.
So, here's the question I pose to you: When was the first time you heard Dilla? Whether it be a guest verse or track he produced. For me, it would have to be "Bullshit" off Pharcyde's Labcabincalifornia. I remember seeing the tape laying around my friend's room and decided to check it out based on the album title alone. The first track was obviously..."Bullshit."
As soon as those drums kicked in, I was hooked. I had never heard anything so soulful before. It blew my mind. I ended up saving up two weeks of school lunch money to go buy the tape myself. After that, I continued to buy anything and everything Dilla's name was attached to. My collection is extensive.
