How to set up Bryan VS Punk at Wrestlemania

Championship Contender
There has been a lot of love on these boards regarding a WWE Championship match between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 30. Most see this as a face-vs-face encounter that occurs because one of the men will win the Royal Rumble. While I wouldn't be opposed to that - and giving the crowd a chance to choose which guy to cheer for could lead to an explosive environment at 'Mania - I see this as being more of a traditional heel vs face showdown. And as C.M. Punk is as good a heel as the WWE has had since Triple H's heyday, I can better see him playing this role in a potential feud.

So how do you get there? Right now, CM Punk is feuding with Paul Heyman/Ryback and Daniel Bryan is in the midst of feuding with Triple H / Randy Orton. I think the perfect solution is to start this at Battleground.

Now Battleground will likely feature Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton squaring off for the vacated WWE Title and CM Punk squaring off with Ryback. The two keys are to continue both feuds moving forward - Heyman must screw CM Punk out of a win while there must be confusion in the WWE Title match:

Perhaps, Bryan has the advantage in the WWE Title match when the ref takes a bump. The Shield swarms the ring, each man on the apron ready to attack when The Big Show runs to make the save. Him and Bryan take out The Shield. As they're disposed of, Orton gets to his feet. Orton screams at Show to knock out Daniel Bryan, but he won't do it. He's had enough. He knocks out Orton instead, allowing Bryan to make the pin. The decision will be overturned, the belt once again vacated, and a WWE Title Tournament will be announced for Survivor Series (just like in 1998).

The McMahon's will continue to be disappointed in Randy Orton during the coming weeks. They're upset that he can't beat Daniel Bryan cleanly, and they will tell him to his face that he needs to find the old Orton - behind his back, they'll have doubts if he can return to that form.

Meanwhile, Paul Heyman will demand that Ryback be entered into the WWE Title Tournament - after all, he just beat "the best in the world." Triple H will tell Heyman "You can have a spot if Ryback wins a qualifying match." When Ryback wins the qualifying match, Triple H will announce that for winning the match, Paul Heyman has earned a spot in the WWE Title Tournament at Survivor Series - and that his opponent in the first round is C.M. Punk ... because, that's just good for business.

The first round matches will be:

Punk vs Heyman - This gives us the necessary blow-off to this feud as Punk finally gets his hands on Heyman. Ryback tries to save his new manager, but it's to no avail as Punk overcomes those odds and moves on to the second round.

Orton vs. Miz - The grudge between the two was set up nicely last night. It will be set-up by the McMahons to bring out the monster inside Orton, just as it did last night. Orton moves on.

Big Show vs. Bryan - Triple H will try to manipulate Show into "ending" Bryan by giving him a shot at the Title. After all, you make more money when you're the champ, right? Bryan, however, will slay the giant and move on. After the match, an angry Triple H tells Big Show to get his gear and to leave the arena.

Christian vs Damien Sandow - Sandow wants to become the first reigning MITB holder to win the WWE Title. Christian wants one more match for the belt. Christian moves on.

Seconds Round:

Punk vs Christian. In a face-vs-face match, the two vets put on a solid match. CM Punk ultimately prevails and moves on to the finals.

Orton vs Bryan. Once again, Bryan will continue to own Orton in the ring. As happened at Battleground, though, the ref will take a bump and the Shield will swarm the ring. This time, however, Big Show won't be around to make the save, and Bryan will take a vicious beating that allows Orton to get the win and move on to the finals.

Prior to the final match, Punk will do a backstage interview, talking about the odds are stacked against him - but that he likes it that way. He'll say how he's no different than Daniel Bryan, a former indies star that doesn't have the build or the look to be what the McMahon's want. But that tonight, he'll overcome those odds again and take down Orton.

Punk vs Orton. The crowd will be solidly behind Punk during this match, which will only make it more chaotic when Triple H ultimately turns on Orton, and aids CM Punk in victory. Upset that Orton can't beat Daniel Bryan on his own, the McMahon's have turned to C.M. Punk as their champion.

This settles a few things. 1) This sets up Punk/Orton for TLC and possibly the Rumble, which would keep Bryan and Punk from wrestling prior to 'Mania. 2) It gives Bryan another hurdle to jump in order to get the WWE Title, which he eventually jumps over by winning the Royal Rumble. 3) It possibly sets up friction between Vince McMahon and Triple H since CM Punk clearly wouldn't be a VKM choice for champion.

Thoughts?

I'd just keep things going as they are with Bryan and Punk finally getting the upper hand in their feuds. Then have Punk win the Rumble and move the corporate angle away from the title (possibly with a Vince face turn). Then you have the WWE title match and a battle for control match set for Mania.

As a personal preference I prefer the traditional Survivor Series tag matches than a King of the Ring style tournament and I'm guessing that with people helping out Bryan now that they're going to eventually go with a 'Corporate Team' vs. 'Bryan's Team'.

There's also the issue that Hell in a Cell is scheduled prior to Survivor Series and I see that as being the blow-off point for Punk/Heyman and a temporarily hiatus for Bryan away from challenging for the title until he manages to win the Rumble.

Personally, I'd prefer something non-traditional heading into Mania. Perhaps a returning Cena again wins the Rumble. At RAW, he decides that he wants to Main Event Mania, not for a championship, But against Taker. This leaves the Bryan/Punk storyline open to form organically without worrying about Cena being added to the title mix.

Bryan vs Punk for the WWE is a dream match for many. I would love to see it but I think there are other options. I wouldn't be against having Orton involved in a triple threat (acting as the heel) but I understand the appeal of a straight singles match.

As for the build, I think the logical step is for one of the two to win the Royal Rumble. I would probably go for Bryan but it doesn't really matter. Like I said earlier, I would rather see a triple threat but Punk as Champion vs RR winner Daniel Bryan sounds great. Punk winning the belt of Orton around Survivor Series. Orton could go on to feud with The Rock, Jericho or Sheamus.

There feud doesn't have to be traditional heel v face and they can just have a rivalry build on being the "best in the world". Two "indie" guys in the main-event of WM would also be intriguing from the Vince McMahon side of the equation.

If it happened and IDK why but I just can't, I would keep it face vs face. They could book it around two guys who took the tough way to get to where they are and who love wrestling and are just going to wrestle out for the honor of being WWE champion. I would rather have Punk win the Royal Rumble and going in against D-Bry who is the champ. My reason for that being is that the match setup would seem more competitive that way like Bryan has done everything to become WWE champ again and will do everything not to lose it then you have Punk who I would make not touch the gold since his long title reign ended and wants to do anything to regain the title. I would prefer Orton be added in there for the triple threat too because I think that could rival Benoit vs HHH vs HBK. I'm not entirely sure how I would book it right now though unless Bryan and Orton are still feuding at EC and something screwy happens putting them both in the main event.

The story is a pretty easy one, it's the battle between two guys who were never supposed to make it, coming from the gym's and armories wrestling in front of 50 people to headlining the biggest wrestling show on the planet for the richest prize in the business, as I said in another thread it's Rocky Balboa vs Rocky Balboa.

I see no point in turning Punk heel, WWE have tried so hard to get faces over and right now these two are genuinely over huge with the WWE crowds, unlike guys like Sheamus and even more so Del Rio and Miz. To turn one of the faces fans actually fully rally behind and who offers a very different type of face to Cena and Bryan just doesn't make sense to me.

As for a triple threat, the only way I'd be interested in that is if Cena was the 3rd guy, but in truth I think you totally dilute the story and the big match feel when you add in a 3rd guy most of the time.

CM Punk wins the Royal Rumble, Daniel Bryan wins the WWE title before the end of 2013. This sets up the log awaited feud between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, a match that IMO needs to happen at WrestleMania 30. There's too much money in that match to do it any other time and the only thing CM Punk really has not done is win the Royal Rumble.

For me, it would the co-main event of WrestleMania but obviously not the THE main event, assuming the WWE have "bigger fish" to fry.

Honestly i would like Bryan to win the rumble, personally he gets put into entry 1, and entry 2 is Orton. Sort of a repeat of the rey and triple h royal rumble start. Bryan wins it, honestly put him over even more so, which i know is crazy talk but, rumble wins dont need to be for people who are like cena who dont need it, he can just make up a promo to get a title match at mania, so give it someone who needs it, adds to their character, and have cena return to rumble entry 30, and bryan throws him over, MAN OH MAN, that would be great. Monday night you have cena's promo saying his okay with it, his proud of bryan and bryan deserves it, but he didnt want to win rumble, his got a different main event idea for mania, and he starts to set up the taker promo.

Punk should start chasing the belt again by December or January and win it at rumble, Bryan comes out, stares him down, he stares back, and bryan points at the mania banner, perfect moment, perfect picture. Rumble comes to a close, everyone is happy.

You can't have Punk as a corporation guy when he spent a good part of 2011 hating on Triple H, Stephanie and Vince.

How I would do it is too different ways
1) bryan wins at HIAC and stays champion against a RR winner punk
Or
2) orton wins at HIAC and at survivor series cm punk and bryan are in same team. They are sole survivors and then triple h is like ok you too have to battle ladder match at tlc and winner faces randy at rumble. Then either bryan or punk could win get the title at rumble and other wins the RR were they then face each other.

What do you guys think?
