Well...not exactly. There's a 1 in 250,000 chance that the asteroid, Apophis, may hit us in 2036. Then a secondary chance of an impact in 2068 of 1 in 330,000.
Putin's gotten all ballsy and is contemplating sending a rocket up to deflect the asteroid's path. Russia is essentially saying "Don't worry you guys, we got this."
This thread is for one thing, really. What if an asteroid were going to hit Earth? Would you pull a Putin and try to deflect the asteroid, or ride your chances?
Then, as a corollary, what if a Deep Impact situation were to occur? Morgan Freeman, our quite incredibly unexpected President during 2036, announces that an asteroid will most definitely hit Earth. No 1 in 220,000 chances, no "We can still blow it up with a nuke!" arguments. All of us who aren't the cream of the civic crop will die. Those who are lucky enough to be deemed necessary to a reemerging human society will survive in underground bunkers.
What would you do? Spend days with your loved ones, quit work, riot, try to break into one of those handy dandy government shelters?
Stake your claim.
