Steve Coogan expects a decision to be made this month on a big screen outing for his comic creation Alan Partridge.
"This is kind of make or break," Coogan told the BBC. "In a month it'll be very clear whether we're going to do it or not."
Coogan said he and comedian Rob Brydon were also about to start work on a film directed by Michael Winterbottom.
Coogan, 44, appears in the big-budget fantasy adventure Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, out this week.
Coogan's buffoonish character Alan Partridge began life as a spoof sports reporter on BBC Radio 4's On The Hour before moving to television on BBC Two's The Day Today.
But Coogan said that he did not want to go ahead with a movie version without the involvement of writers Armando Iannucci and Peter Baynham.
"You have to get all the right elements," he said. "We're not going to do it unless we think we can do something really good."
Following Coogan's statement, Iannucci took to micro-blogging site Twitter to comment on the proposed film.
"Thought I might add fuel to rumour-fires by saying [I have spent the] last few days plotting a Partridge story," he wrote.

In the effects-heavy Percy Jackson film, Coogan plays Hades - Greek god of the Underworld - as a strutting, narcissistic British rock star.
Coogan said: "I got to wear snakeskin trousers which I wouldn't normally do. He's that kind of British rock star - that slightly androgynous thing that the Americans can't do.
"When you've got all these visual effects around you half the job is done for you - the rest of it is just camping it up. So I wore Cuban heels and strutted a bit."
Percy Jackson is the latest film from Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potters, as well as box office hits like Home Alone and Mrs Doubtfire.
The cast also includes Sean Bean as Zeus, Uma Thurman as the snake-haired Medusa, Grey's Anatomy star Kevin McKidd as Poseidon and Pierce Brosnan as a centaur.
Columbus told the BBC he first became familiar with Coogan's TV work when he would wind down after a long day on the Harry Potter set by watching Alan Partridge.
Coogan has since appeared in several big-budget movies like Night at the Museum, Tropic Thunder and Around the World in 80 Days.
