This is the 1st of 4 topics I will be doing in the near future regarding the PPV events that did not feature a World Heavyweight Championship match during Brock Lesnar's recent reign.

This past October we saw something odd take place. WWE had a PPV event that did NOT feature a World Heavyweight Championship match. The event felt incredibly incomplete, as did the 3 other PPV events where Brock Lesnar did not defend his title. The whole point of being a wrestler is (kayfabe) to win a World Championship and when others have had the title taken away from them when they did not defend it it was ridiculous for WWE to go an entire PPV cycle, let alone doing this for as many as FOUR events.

Here are the results from the event:

Pre-Show: Mark Henry defeated Bo Dallas in a singles match.

1. Dolph Ziggler (c) defeated Cesaro 2-0 in a 2-out-of-3 falls match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

2. Nikki Bella defeated Brie Bella in a singles match where the loser became the winner's personal assistant for 30 days and if she refused she would have been fired.

3. Gold and Stardust (c) defeated The Usos in a tag team match for the WWE Tag Team Championship.

4. John Cena defeated and Randy Orton in a Hell in a Cell Match to become the #1 contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

5. Sheamus (c) defeated The Miz (with Damien Mizdow) in a singles match for the WWE United States Championship.

6. Rusev (with Lana) defeated Big Show by submission in a singles match.

7. AJ Lee (c) defeated Paige (with Alicia Fox) by submission in a singles match for the WWE Divas Championship.

8. Seth Rollins (with Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury) defeated Dean Ambrose in a Hell in a Cell match.

So, for the purposes of discussion in this thread you are to come up with a World Heavyweight Championship match for Hell In A Cell 2014. Would you have had Brock Lesnar defend it? Would he be stripped of the title due to his not appearing at this show at the actual event? You may make a match between anyone who was currently active on the roster at that time. Feel free to re-book the entire card also if you wish, but in order for your post to remain on-topic you must address what to do about the World Championship match and don't forget to provide a reason for why you booked it the way you did.

What would your version of Hell In A Cell 2014 have been like? What would the World Heavyweight Championship match have been and why?

Discuss! :)

See, that's the problem. WWE has no established stars.

There's really nobody left for Brock except Daniel Broken Bryan, The Rock, and Orton.

Now think about this. The guy just signed on for three more years. Three more manias.

Who the hell would you have him fight full time?

Every realistic answer besides those three is just your imagination talking.

To each their own but I happened to enjoy the absence of Brock and the World Heavyweight Championship. During his reign I didn’t feel the least slighted by missing monthly defense. In fact I found it rather refreshing and more so looked forward to the events he was present at. I also felt it pushed creative a bit more to develop something semi interesting and gave (should have been more) focus on the lesser championships. In this case I particularly loved the main event choice pitting Rollins against Ambrose. They gave the young bucks the ball and they ran with.

Back to the topic……..

Inserting Brock may have change a lot of the booking decisions at the time. Searching for a logical answer becomes quite a difficult task. The first name that comes to mind is John Cena. He was embarrassed at Summer Slam by Lesnar but proved to be a formidable challenger at NOC. Would the rubber match, three events in a row, work for the audience? I will pass on Cena at this point. We could look at the young crop of stars beginning to blossom. We have Wyatt, Rusev, Rollins (Mr. MitB), Ambrose and Reigns (uh oh hernia). None are ready for this position yet. Hell we could go all the way back to WM, fix the Cesaro booking and have him ready to challenge Brock but that’s an extreme stretch. Some would say Orton is the obvious choice but he would’ve needed to break away from the Authority as he was in major heel mood at the time. Plus I am not sure NOC is actually worthy of a Lesnar vs. Orton title bout. For the sake of this conversation I am going with Chris Jericho. Jericho is a well-respected name. He has accomplished everything (kayfabe) a super star would want over the course of his career. He has accumulated an impressive trophy case, worked this biggest events and has shined in the biggest moments. If presented properly Jericho could have an outside shot at coming out victorious. If anything else the fans would have been treated to an amazing outing.

Of course for Lesnar vs. Jericho to work we need to rewrite a bit of history. In doing so I am assuming Brock’s availability for HiaC is known well in advance. The program with Wyatt is gone, not happening. In reality Jericho was back in time for a match at Battleground, not happening either. At Battleground we get a hype package announcing Summer Slam is Jericho. The multi time champion is returning for a special role as the Summer Slam ambassador. In the following few weeks he makes appearances on WWE programming hyping the event. Due to his role as ambassador he has negotiated a bit of pull causing him to buttheads with the Authority. This leads to a match at the event against Kane. Let’s remember Kane has taken out Daniel Bryan and has been involved in multiple title bouts. Of course Jericho goes over. The following night, as time is running out on any contractual pull he has, Jericho names himself the new number one contender. This is later disputed by the Authority who set up a true number one contenders match at NOC with Jericho facing Orton. Jericho goes over the Authority again. We have set the table for Jericho challenging for the WWE WHC. Imagine the back and forth between Heyman and Jericho here. One would assume we would be witnessing pure ecstasy. Headed into the match Jericho realizes the mountain of a task in front of him but his confidence never wavers. He plans to use superior intellect, experience, and vast skill set to topple the beast. If all that fails he will tase Brock’s ass. That’s work in the past right? Oh yeah, that was another unstoppable j/o.
In the end the Brock is feed a respectable and deserving name. The fans are treated to some great build as two of the best mouthpieces in the business exchange banter. Plus a tremendous match within the Cell. Jericho is a workhorse in the ring and this never seen before matchup would surely be a true spectacle.

Good topic! WWE did a good job with this PPV despite the Brock absence. It gave WWE the opportunity to build Orton up again for his inevitable face turn. #RKOuttaNoWhere was getting over, Ambrose and Rollins were shining as a solo stars and had the hottest feud of the summer.

My version of HIAC:
WWE WHC Triple Threat match
John Cena vs. Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar (c)

Singles Match
Dean Ambrose vs. Randy Orton

Unification Fatal Four Way match for the IC and US titles
Cesaro vs. The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler (c) vs. Sheamus (c)
The US title was barely being defended since Sheamus was US Champion. The IC title was being passed around like a hot potato between The Miz and Dolph Ziggler. The contenders for the titles were starting to be the same as well. Cesaro competed for the US title at NoC, then face Ziggler for the IC title at HIAC. It was vice versa for The Miz.

HIAC Singles Match
Jack Swagger vs. Rusev
Swagger lost to Rusev at Summerslam. There should have been a one-on-one match between Bo Dallas and Jack Swagger, an opportunity for Swagger to get his confidence back. The victory would then set up a final Swagger vs. Rusev match at HIAC instead of pushing it back to TLC.

Tag Team Championship Match
Goldust and Stardust (c) vs. The Usos

Divas Championship match
AJ Lee (c) vs. Paige

Singles Match
Brie Bella vs. Nikki Bella

What really makes the most sense to me is to just plop Brock Lesnar into the HIAC between John Cena and Randy Orton to make a Triple Threat WWE championship match. I think it'd be a great match that could see some good moments. Also what would be interesting is that they all came from the OVW 2002 class and they all accomplished so much. Have some Authority Shenanigans possibly go on to tie into the SS match and pour some water on the Orton face turn but Lesnar still walks out with the title.

The aftermath of this would see the rest of 2014 going as it did, but because I already used a Triple threat with Cena and Lesnar, at the 2015 Royal Rumble I'd have Brock Lesnar defend against a returning Daniel Bryan. Lesnar wins and enters Mania as champion. I also would have Cena in the rumble that way Rusev could eliminate him in a heelish way leading to their match. Everything else goes as it does.
