Greatest Coach Ever: NFL

Big Sexy

Deadly Rap Cannibal
I did the NBA last week and now we are moving on to the NFL. Here are some candidates:

Vince Lombardi- He took over a bad Green Bay team and in 9 seasons he led them to 4 NFL championship games, winning three of them and he also led them to the first 2 Super Bowls winning both of those. The year after he stepped down the Packers went 6-7-1 and missed the playoffs. In 1969 he coached one year for the Redskins and led them to a 7-5-2 record. It was their first winning record in 14 seasons. For my money Lombardi is the greatest NFL coach of all time.

Paul Brown- Coached for 25 years, 17 in Cleveland and 8 in Cincinnati. In his first four seasons with the Browns he led hem to the AAFC championship. In his 5th year they merged with the NFL and the Browns won the NFL championship that year. Brown led them to 2 more titles during his time their and had only one losing season in 17 years. In Cincinatti he took over a completely new Bengals franchise and after a couple rocky years led them to 4 winning seasons and 3 trips to the playoffs. He is also credited for teaching Bill Walsh the west coast offense and in 1946 he signed two black players to his team which was unheard of at the time.

Don Shula- I have him neck and neck with Lombardi as the greatest ever because he was so good for so long. He coached 33 seasons, 7 with the Colts and then 26 with the Dolphins. In those 33 years he had a losing record only twice. He led his teams to 6 Super Bowls winning two of them. He also led the 1972 Dolphins to the only perfect season in NFL history.

Bill Walsh- He was only a head coach for 10 years but he left a lasting legacy. After struggling a couple years he finally got the right people in place and in 7 of the next 8 seasons his 49ers not only had a winning record, they had double digit wins all those years. He also won 3 Super Bowls during this time period.

Tom Landry- He coached the Cowboys for 29 years. He had a losing season his first 5 years, went .500 his 6th year, and had a losing season in his last 2 years. The 20 seasons in between that the Cowboys had a winning record every year, went to 5 Super Bowls, and won two of them. 20 straight winning seasons with one team is an impressive feat.

Other candidates include: Chuck Noll, George Halas, Bill Parcells, Joe Gibbs, John Madden, George Allen etc.

I've got Lombardi at 1 with Don Shula 1a. So who do you think is the greatest NFL coach of all time?

It has to be Lombardi. He was a master motivator and always got his teams ready to play, proof of this is that he won 5 championships in 9 years and had a 9-1 record in the postseason.

I'm going to go with Don Shula. 33 years of coaching and only 2 of them were bad seasons. He's had the only perfect season in NFL history, and that's an amazing accomplishment. He may not have the most rings ever, but the fact that he coached a team that has done something no other team has done is amazing.
