Okay, so after one night of Plasma HDTV I have to say I'd rather have my LCD back. I think I'm just picking at minor things, and being an overall "old schoolist" in not wanting to change from what I adapted to and liked.. but here are my pros and cons of the whole thing.
Plasma PROS:
1. While I don't see much difference, the contrast ratio on my current Plasma is 30,000:1.. whereas on my LCD, it was 5000:1 (possibly 6000:1) So the picture is SUPPOSE to be a lot better, more crisp. After watching a bit of HDTV tonight, I didn't see much difference except.. Erin watched Nascar a bit and it came in extremely well. And I watched a bit of the Titans/Packers pre-season game on nfl-network and it was very well put together.
2. The smoothness is a lot better. The one complaint I had more than anything, was the block-like pixels all over the screen w/ LCD. I haven't seen ANY on Plasma.
Plasma CONS:
Unfortunately, my list of cons is bigger right now. I have two that I retain from going into buying one and knowing about. And I have a couple that I've added.
1. "Burn-in's" - What that is, is the Plasma screen will actually work similar to a projection screen in which if you leave something on LONG enough.. it'll burn into the picture screen itself. (the W.W.E. logo for example, is always at the bottom left of the screen during wrestling. Wrestling can be on as long as 3 hours, which means if I don't turn the T.V. off or change the channel.. that logo will BURN into my screen, and stay.)
Another tie-in with this is.. after the television has used up around 500-600 hours of usage, it's more used to what you watch and it's more "worn in" which means it won't burn-in stuff as quickly. However, I was playing madden tonight and after 2 Quarters, I turned the game off to watch television (Wife wanted to) and the madden score board had already started to copy into the screen a bit. I FREAKED OUT! It went away within a minute though.
However, this is my biggest issue alone because it's just too much hassle to fricken pause Madden every Quarter it seems, turn the television off and count to 10. (they said 10 seconds and then turn back on.. you shouldn't get a burn-in)
2. Reflections. This doesn't bother me at all, but LCD screens don't give sunlight reflection. Plasma screens will. Since my television is in a room with ONE window, and the television is currently BLOCKING that window, this negative doesn't effect me. But if you ever consider a Plasma yourself, it could you depending on what room you put the television in.
3. Sharpness. This is actually SUPPOSE to be a pro for the Plasma v. LCD rivalry, but personally I can't stand seeing tons of snow-like flakes. And fuzziness. I haven't yet adjusted the picture and quality to my likeness, but it just doesn't feel right yet.
4. Lack of hook-ups. Until I buy a fricken $30.00 HDMI cable, I'm stuck undoing, and redoing my Satellite and xbox 360, because it only has ONE HD component hook-up, and 3 HDMI hook-ups. My 360 has to have the component hook-up, and my dish can take the HDMI once I buy the cable.
Still, my LCD had 3 component hook-ups, and then several regular ones for my VCR & PS2 on the side.
My final complaint is I've yet to figure out how to hook my VCR up to the television, to record programming off my dish. I did it on my LCD, but haven't figured out how to hook things up properly yet to have it work for the Plasma. I'm assuming there is a way though.
Overall: In the end, I'm just an LCD fan.. but I'm NOT a fan of my only one having it's stand just randomly break. So that still pisses me off, and it's another reason I've given Plasma a chance. The stand alone on this is lower to the ground, and it's a bit thicker. I'm hoping my issues with everything will go away. The Burn-out factor really ticks me off, because it's just TOO MUCH WORK to sit and remember to turn your t.v. off every 30 minutes - hour when you're playing a game.
At any rate, THAT is my review of Plasma v. LCD. What are everyone else's thoughts? If you own one or the other, give your own reviews. "Sell me" on why one is definately better.
I'd really like anyone who owns a Plasma to explain to me why it's a great television to own. Please add detail. Thank You.
