Government wants to take our internetz away

This comes from an article not sure if I can post the link so i'm going to play it safe and just post an excerpt

"In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US."

So the hearing was supposed to be today but in an update it has been postponed. Hopefully it just keeps getting pushed back until its lost in the stack of bills. If this law passes who knows how many websites could get shut down.

If this were to happen they would shut down ANYTHING that is "Infringement" and this could possibly get worse. If you ever read about how bad the internet is in China then this would scare you. I really doubt it will make it past the House but if something like this really did pass I'd be scared.

So, because a bunch of websites that are illegal might get shut down. Why should I care that the internet might be getting pruned?

because there's no way that Youtube would just have a panic and take doen any slightly questionable video before it got shut down, right?

This is the same company that gave all of your information to Viacom, right?

I'm sorry, but if THIS is what concerns you, then you should be very thankful in your ignorance.

Our wonderful "Big Brother" government wants to do FAR worse things to the Internet and the users on it.

This is the same government who gave a rediculously huge sum of money to scientists who created a 40 step reaction with 18 PhD students with a 2% yield to synthesise a naturally ocurring product, right?

NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean, seriously. If they start censoring select websites - that more or less means porn. Thats roughly 85% of the internet. What would be left? Myspace, Facebook, random forums, photobucket, and msnbc?

I spend roughly 4 hours on the internet. 3 hours, 48 minutes and 19 seconds of that are spent looking at porn. This better not pass.

Porn is constitutional. They can't do shit about that.

As long as it's not kiddy porn.

I'd make a joke, but on that note - not even that can be joked about to me.

I've watched a lot of weird shit though. Midgets, Clowns, stuff of that nature. If a story is involved - I'll really get into watching just for the story and actually skip the sex. LQTM

That's basically the biggest thing to worry about, if this were to pass (and I highly doubt it will considering we were just criticizing other countries for censoring the internet) it would give them the system to take further steps to alter what we can access as they see fit. This would just be getting the foot in the door for them more than anything to be given the ability to do such things.

They already are Ty. Look up FBI wants ISP backdoor, the fight on Net Neutrality, and FBI wants ISP to keep logs.

It really is scary stuff there.

I've been reading up on all that, this is just another step to do it all publicly. The FBI wanting an ISP backdoor is ridiculous, it's going to open up Pandora's Box if you will because every top notch hacker is basically going to have free access to anything they really want just by infiltrating the access the FBI wants.

Net Neutrality should have been signed and dated already, but due to technicalities that the FCC doesn't "regulate" internet connectivity, Comcast is getting their way. I believe the FCC is reworking their policies right now so they can have the proper rights to regulate it.

Every government agency wants ISP's to keep logs, the Internet is just too open for their liking.

It's amazing...the government is supposed to represent us, the police departments protect us...somehow that mentality has turned into figuring out how the government can screw us and how the police can "get" us.

I'm a big supporter of the police, they get waaay to much crap, but there really is no need for some of these measures. It will lead to the infringement upon the Bill of Rights, not to mention, like I said, the FBI should be about protecting us, not trying to get information to incriminate us. It's a fine line, but one that is being crossed.
