Since Goldust's return & resurgence in the latter part of last year, there's been speculation as to what's gonna happen with him in the long run. The notion of him facing Cody Rhodes at a WrestleMania match is something that's been talked about by fans for a long time. According to reports that came out not too long after he & Cody won the tag titles, there were plans in place to turn Goldust heel and have him face Cody at WrestleMania. The reports said that the idea was to turn Goldie around the Royal Rumble, but the Royal Rumble is tonight and there've been no hints of storyline tension between them. This doesn't mean that it can't happen, as maybe WWE is going for a shock & awe turn in which Goldie just turns on Cody right out of the blue.

However, Goldust gave an interview sometime this week, maybe even yesterday, to the Miami Herald to promote the Royal Rumble ppv. He answers questions regarding his sobriety, how he's lost so much weight, how he's inspiring other wrestlers, etc. In the interview, he stated that he's no longer interested in facing Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania:

"The dream match I did have I do not anymore at WrestleMania. So right now I want to continue to be the WWE tag team champions and have someone big step up to try to face us at WrestleMania. I think we need to try to be on that card and put on one hell of a show."

Over the past few months, I've had something of a change of heart myself in regards to this program. The Rhodes brothers have been a really good team and I personally think WWE has a good thing going with them. They have momentum right now, fans are understandably entertained by their matches and the tag team picture overall is healthier now than it's been in probably a decade or more. They have momentum, they still feel fresh, they obviously mesh well as a tag team, there's also the novelty of WWE having the first legit brother tag team champions since The Hardy Boys & only the 4th in the history of the company. They've done a good job as champs, in my opinion, so having a tag title match at WrestleMania with his brother might honestly be a big moment for both Cody & Goldie. Now, just because Goldust said he isn't interested in facing Cody anymore doesn't mean he's telling the truth or, even if it is, that it's not going to happen.

Based simply on his own words, which is all we have to go by, should The Brotherhood break up and have a singles match at WrestleManiaXXX?

Personally, just based on me being someone that watches WWE, I think that they break up and fight at WMXXX.

First of all, Goldust is pretty much a company man. He's not the type to shoot, even a really moderate shoot like this, without approval. The WWE has that unofficial rule (that's more like a guideline) that basically says "You don't mention anything that ever happened ever before this current angle that you're in right now started, unless we approve it." I think this is more of a work.

Secondly, Goldust, as I've stated before IS 45 years old (in April). Most wrestlers can still go at 45, but rarely on a full time schedule. So as the next year progresses, you either have Cody in a tag team and not being used very often, or you split them up. But if they're getting split up, why not do it at WMXXX, literally, the grandest stage that pro wrestling has ever been on?

Third, I fell as though Cody is wasted in a tag team. I mean, The Brotherhood is exactly what the tag division needed, and mixed with The Usos and The SHIELD, there are some dominant teams in there. Cody and Goldust work so well together, but Cody needs a chance to build off of this great attention they're getting right now. He is still young in his career, and he can really branch off from this.

Fourth, on a fantasy level, I want Dusty to be the antagonist in this feud. I want Dusty to tell his boys that only one of them can carry on the title of The American Dream. Only one of them can carry the legacy of the Rhodes family name. Cutting good old fashioned territory promos, etc. I want this to all happen on the Road to Wrestlemania XXX. Not that this one actually matters, but I just think I'd mark hard for this.

I feel really undecided about the topic now. Originally, I would have said that the Brotherhood should drop the titles at or around the Royal Rumble, challenge for them at Elimination Chamber and lose, then break up and face each other at WrestleMania XXX.

Here's the thing - Goldust can still go. As long as he can go, keep the titles on them. As you said, they are arguably the most popular tag team at the moment and fans have been much more interested in the tag team division because of these two. Why fix something that isn't broken?

As long as this team is thriving, keep the gold around their wastes. At WrestleMania XXX, I think some sort of multi-tag team match will happen. The Brotherhood (c) vs The New Age Outlaws vs The Real Americans vs The Usos is my prediction. I'd love to see this. Then again, I'd love to see Cody Rhodes vs Goldust. SummerSlam maybe? They shouldn't be reduced to a random PPV event, I think it deserves more. How exciting.

I picked choice #2. I guess I'll copy Laodaron's formula for why

1) Their singles match will be totally overshadowed at WM, assuming they even get a spot. It's WM30, they're obviously going all out to make it as huge as possible with as many big names as they can possibly get. A singles match between the brothers simply won't get the promo time it needs to make it seem like a huge deal beforehand, and will sadly pale in comparison to the other big single matches they have in store. At least if they stay together as a tag they get to be in a title match which doesn't need nearly as much air time. Plus during their time together they've stolen the show for multiple PPVs, and they have a better chance of doing that again at WM together than apart.

2) There's more they can do with the Brotherhood. The Rhodes hasn't had much of any story time since getting the titles, they've defended the titles a bunch of times in great matches sure but there's never any story behind them outside of "here's a bunch of #1 contenders, go". Now if they stick together and actually get into actual heated feuds over the tag titles that would be a great watch for us, especially since it can be a great way to help make another team look good too.

3) Cody has a LOT of time, Goldust does not. The fact that Goldust came back in such great shape is truly amazing, and so are his performances since coming back. But the harsh truth is this is going to be the best he's going to get. Once they split the only thing Goldust is going to do is job to younger stars or go back off-screen. Those great performances we've been seeing from him will be all but over after that WM match. Cody on the other hand is really young, like almost a decade younger then Cena. He has all the time in the world to move up in the singles card. He can afford to stick with his brother for a while longer until he's ready to ride into the sunset.

4) Cody would get lost in the shuffle after WM. This is one of those it's better to be a big fish in a small pond instead of a regular fish in a huge pond type of things. There's a lot of single guys that needs to be pushed, especially once the Shield breaks up where not only is Reigns going to pushed heavily, but they need to find something to do with Ambrose/Rollins. Basically Cody would end up like Sandow, Miz, Ziggler, etc etc. Ok maybe not with their usual losing streak but having meaningless matches on Raw/SD and hoping to get on PPV pre-shows since chances are he's not going to be on the actual card. (Yes I know their match at RR is on the pre-show, such a waste)

TL-DR: No - They have a good thing going. :p

In a hypothetical world, I'd like to see it... but it will NEVER, EVER happen at WrestleMania 30, and therefore, will never happen at any WrestleMania because its now or never.

There's already five matches that at least in the WWE's eyes are "just about finalized", with a sixth rumored. Now no matter whether or not you believe this is going to be the card, (I'm not going to bother listing it) everyone mentioned on the rumored card is in a singles match, whatever the finalized product turns out to be, it's safe to assume they'll all end up in singles matches. With the one exception MAYBE being Bray Wyatt.

So that's five, with a possible sixth singles match... plus another singles match in Cody Rhodes vs. Goldust? It just won't happen.

WWE, especially lately likes to keep it around 8-9 matches for a WrestleMania card, and with those 5-6 singles matches, they're already leaving a lot of people off, add yet another singles match and now more people won't get a spot. Guys like Ambrose, Rollins, Reigns, Ziggler, Big E...

I would like to see it, but there's no way it happens.

I thought about this the other day, but the STACKED card at Wrestlemania XXX creates problems for the one on one math with Cody and Goldust. If we're looking at the lineup now, this is a list of everyone who, will (and should) appear:

Randy Orton
John Cena
CM Punk
Triple H
Batista
The Wyatt Family
The Undertaker
Big Show
Brock Lesnar
Daniel Bryan
The Shield
Kofi Kingston
Rey Mysterio
Ryback
AJ
The Bellas
Other Divas
Big. E Langston
Alberto Del Rio
Mark Henry
Dolph Ziggler
The Usos
The New Age Outlaws (tentative pick)

On top of that you have the likes of Chris Jericho, Sheamus, and RVD as potential surprise entrants in this year's Rumble, and it's safe to say RVD and Sheamus are a 100% guarantee for spots at Wrestlemania XXX. The WWE WHC match will eat up a lot of time. Brock Lesnar's match should eat up a lot of time. Triple H VS Punk should fall into the #3 spot for the most important match on the card, and you know Undertaker's match will receive a significant amount of time, because The Streak match is one of the most highly anticipated matches on the card every year.

Hell, if Cody and Goldust are lucky they might get a five minute forgettable match, or they'll receive the pre-show treatment again. During Goldust's resurgence, I warmed up to the idea of Cody VS Goldust at Wrestlemania, and I picked the NAO to beat them tonight. But I never took the time to consider the stacked card at this year's Wrestlemania during my predictions.

So I'm hoping Cody and Goldust will stick together past Wresltemania XXX, and then WWE can pull the trigger on a break up. If the break up happens after Mania, Cody and Goldust should receive more spotlight and more time to build their feud for a series of matches.

That's not going to happen on the road to Wrestlemania. Storylines for Triple H VS Punk, Brock Lesnar, The Undertaker, Randy Orton, Batista, John Cena, and Daniel Bryan will DOMINATE (especially Cena, Orton, Undertaker, Batista, HHH, Punk, and Bryan) Raw and Smackdown during the Mania XXX build, and no one will give a shit about Cody and Goldust's feud, because the brothers won't have a chance to stand out under a heap of major feuds going into Mania.

I put together a pretty awesome WrestleMania card in my head (don’t we all think that?) and Goldust vs. Cody was not on it. Instead of breaking them up and wrestling each other at mania I have them breaking up at mania. The match I had in mind was Goldust and Cody defending the titles in a four way match against the Real Americans, the Uso’s, and The Wyatt Family. Leading up to mania Cody needs to show subtle signs of embarrassment about how Goldust behaves and Goldust needs to show jealousy and resentment as a result. Right before mania Cody apologizes to Goldust and says he accepts him for who he is. Goldust accepts but still feels a bit betrayed. At mania it comes down to Goldust & Cody against the Wyatt’s and at a crucial point Goldust turns his back on Cody allowing the Wyatt’s to win the titles. Goldust joins the Wyatt family saying he has finally found a family that is truly accepting of him.

This match is not only a waste at WrestleMania XXX but ultimately a waste of two exciting talents. The tag division in the WWE has seen a nice resurgence and moving forward fans of tag team wrestling can only hope this continues. Leading that charge has been the Brotherhood. An already tremendous talent in Cody Rhodes along with a redefined Goldust has brought the division back into the spot light. Breaking them up leaves the division minus one top level team and send both into singles limbo. It is a safe bet that following the program Goldust will eventually be jobbed out and given some off screen position. Cody will return to the singles ranks and join the sea of young talents viciously competing for very few mid card positions. Right now the smart money is on keeping the team together. They will remain as regulars on television providing fans with high quality matches. They could stand to give up the belts but remain close to the tag title picture.

The idea that it has to happen now or never is absolutely absurd. Goldust might be forty-five but the guy is in the best shape of his life. With the proper booking and careful handling of his schedule there is no reason Goldust will not be around for another year if not longer. If the match is to happen I say give the Rhodes boys more time together and skillfully build towards a split and climax with a match up at WM XXXI.

Honestly I am not sure I want this match to ever happen. It might be nice to see Goldust final ride off into the sunset with his brother, father and other family members at his side all fighting for the same cause.

Here's the thing, if WWE are serious about the Tag Division, the one thing the recent return of the Outlaws proves is that they need to create a new team that will one day be considered "legendary". Not "good" like Jerishow, Miz and Morrison or passible like Awesome Truth other more recent attempts but a bonafide legend team that dominates/is the cornerstone of the division for a long period of time that the other teams are built around and become great because of.

Looking at the options for Cody right now, there is no way he is moving up the card as a singles star. They tried it briefly with the Sandow/MITB stuff and it didn't get the desired reaction.

In Goldust's case, while it's true he is better than he has ever been, he doesn't quite have the name value to justify them giving him that "Cinderella" run to the title/main event. He's quickly proving himself to be up there with the Rudes, Hennig's, Davey Boy's and Vader's who never got the WWF title but even if they split the team, had Goldust the face and chase the belt as a result, he'd fall short.

What both guys have however is they are suddenly part a lightning in a bottle tag team that is better for their careers than their singles could be, the same as how Demolition (pre-Crush), The Hart Foundation and later guys like the Outlaws and Edge and Christian were. Bill Eadie was a fading star much as Goldust, on his way out of the main event picture and towards obscurity, but in Barry Darsow they had a young gun who wasn't going to cut it as a singles star but could benefit from working with the older man.... Ax and Smash never looked back, they never got singles runs of note, but they are legends for Demolition. Likewise for the Outlaws, two guys in total limbo, thrown together who became greater than the sum of their parts, much as the Rhodes boys have.

They have the crowd in a way no team had in the past decade and The Brotherhood are the first since them tor really do that and most importantly, develop an aura, not of invincibility (as they're bound to lose tonight) but of credibility. They could drop to the Outlaws tonight and regain the belts, coming out stronger just as the Outlaws could in 1998/99.

The longer they stay together, the more people will want to team up and focus on the division to match them, and then beat them. It happened in the 80's when the division was at it's peak... it started with the Bulldogs, then came the Harts, Demo's, Rockers and even guys like Andre got in on the action. People would come to WWF to be part of a tag team, because the competition there was as good if not more intense than the singles division.

As Goldust defies time and logic with his ring renaissance, he is also teaching Cody immeasurably and the two are having the time of their lives, much in the same way Edge and Christian did in those halcyon days of 5 second poses and Billy and Brian did as the Outlaws... Two guys working together who feed off each other and clearly love what they do and being able to work with each other most of all.

You can't put it down to the Rhodes' being brothers. They aren't even the only brother team on the roster... but it actually right now looks as if these two really were destined to be this team, at this time and that it is the best thing that has ever happened to both their careers...

Cody will inevitably have longer to go as Dustin is cementing that Hall Of Fame spot even further but this team for another 2 years could see Cody cement a career that lasts almost as long as Dustin's, an ill judged feud could see it end in 5 as a cautionary tale.

The longer these two stay a team and focused the better they become and thus the better and more important the tag titles become.

In a years time, maybe even 2... when the Brotherhood has one or two more reigns under its belt or realistically a LONG reign of over a year, and better teams come in or come together to try and end their dominance...then you can see them do the break-up if they must but one thing that's been proven over the years is brother v brother isn't that impressive in "fake" wrestling. Bret and Owen was the exception, the Hardyz didn't work, neither did the Steiners and you never saw the Funk's or the Briscoes really go at it. Cos people are wise to the act... they know they're not really hating each other and it's just a story...

I am sure when they got into this all side's view was to feud at the end of it... now, I can see none of them wanting to go that way, because the best for the Rhodes name, legacy and WWE's business is keeping them together and on top as long as possible so in 10-15 years time when the "best tag team ever" lists roll around, the Brotherhood are top 5... if nothing else, it's pretty poor when the only top 5 team still active or without a dead or retired member is the Outlaws... This is an easy way for WWE to build a new legend, the pieces are there - let's see if they follow through.

I think this match is inevitable for WMXXX.

WM10-Bret vs. Owen
WM15-Kane vs. Undertaker
WM20-Kane vs. Undertaker
WM25-Matt vs. Jeff

I really don't want them to break the Rhodes Bros anytime soon because I think this is where Cody belongs. Only after Goldie looks to retire, THEN they should face each other and split. Until then, I think Cody should be using this opportunity to return to one of his previous gimmicks. I look at them on the ramp and in the ring and think how much cooler this team would be if Cody were either Dashing (obsessed with his vanity) or "Disfigured" (ashamed of facial abnormalities). It works so well with a character like Goldust who is obsessed with gold, wears a wig, facepaint, and dresses in weird attire.

Imagine Cody with his mask and long jacket with the hoodie on with Goldust's bizarre character. Now there's a fleshed out tag team with 2 developed gimmicks.
