Fixing WWE Superstars

Mac Attack

I'm neat.
WWE Superstars, a show that was designed to pit Superstars from any brand has suffered. It has suffered so much that some people evn go as far as to ask if anyone does watch it. Once a T.V that aired on WGN America is now a show that appears on WWE.com, who now features the likes of wrestlers who get very little to none T.V time. So my question to the posters of Wrestlezone Forums is how would you add presitge to a show that at one point in time had close ratings to TNA. Here are just a few of my suggestions.

Add Promos

People who watch wrestling, want to see wrestling but also want to be entertained. And quite frankly, a quality promo at the beginning of the show adds entertainment value to the overall show. Now I know they have limited time, however a short promo somwhere within the show could help the audience understand the gimmick behind some of the wrestlers who people don't know as well. For example Brodus Clay. I turthfully don't know wheter he is a heel or a face right now, and for someone watching this is a very big problem. Let us hear from the undercard talent and let us decide who we want to like. For example, Zack Ryder a resident of Superstars finally got popularity through talking. Who says this sam success can't be duplicated?

Original Poster

The original psoter of Superstars features the likes of Triple H, CM Punk, Umaga, Jeff Hardy, Undertaker. If I were to make a poster for Superstars now I think it would feature the likes of Alicia Fox, Zack Ryder, Drew McIntyre, Brodus Clay. None of these people are a draw. so why should anyone go out of there way to watch this show? If they advertised someone with some draw power to be on the show then It would get a better audience causing more people to watch. Improve the quality and you get an improved audience. However, if all we ever see is the undercard then there is some problems.

Significant Matches

Yes it is not a main show, however there is no reason why they cannot advertise a #1 contender match for Superstars. At the very least it gets people intrigued as to what happenend on the show. Or even have matches that continue feuds. I understand there may be undercard feuds, but what is the payoff of that? They do not get on pPV and so why should anyone else care? Allow a midcard title feud to take place on there and then you'll realize quality will go up. I don't think scrapping together random matches will get you a lot of viewers.

So how would you fix Superstars, and what would you do to get more viewers.

Maybe I will get a bit of heat for this or maybe other people feel the same, but as of late Superstars has not been bad at all. There has been some very solid matches, with some mid card talent, and previous and future main eventers such as Sheamus and Daniel Bryan to name a couple.

I think Superstars has a bad rep and its unjustified in my opinion, it exists to give talent who are currently not top of creatives priority list, a platform to remain in the spotlight, however dim that light may be, and subsequently in the memory of a proportion of fans.

If I was going to be critical I would say that they need to stop replying highlights from Raw and free up that time to enable them more time to actually create storylines rather than have random matches, that way it could be sort of be like a tester for some feuds and if they look good create some space on Raw for them.

With the major role that social media plays today, even a small bit of tv time on a show like superstars can be the turning point for a career,so even though its WWE.com isn't the end of the world, and its actually on tv here in the UK.

Superstars has been good as of late, however the one glaring problem is that there is no consistency which ultimately means the Superstars aren't doing anything memorable. I am all for giving the undercard matches to stay relevant however, they aren't doing anything to get themselves on the main show. I just feel that Superstars is a place where Superstars wait in limbo, because they really can't prove themselves in a feud.

Promos would be a good idea for starters. Perhaps a running fued that only appears on superstars that gets cheap plugs on the main shows. Like. . ."David Otunga and Alex Riley have had heated exchanged and rugged matches the last couple of weeks on Superstars"., followed by a short promo during Raw or Smackdown between the two mentioning what happened.

Maybe one of the titles could be featured on it. . .as it is, you don't see -ANY- fueds for the United States or Intercontinental titles at all. I seems like nobody even wants them. Same for the tag titles really.

I've been talking to people bout this for awhile. Its a shame they got rid of ECW because it did slide and become nothing like the real ECW and was poor. but very much like superstars but more consitant and with it being an actual brand itd be the same guys and one belt. they have FCW as a minor leagues pretty much what if they took superstars and used the internet championship as their belt so every week it was defended but a cyber sunday/ taboo tuesday type match for the main event so we can see fans vote from a group of ppl, types of matches etc. plus they should have promos because lately its been fun seeing guys like kidd, jtg, drew all them put on good matches but with slim rivalries if any its embarrishing that they are wasting some good talent. I wish theyd make it a 3rd brand and give it a belt to make it relevent.

Is there a need to fix Superstars? The solutions to fix Superstars would just make it another Raw or SmackDown. Superstars serves its purpose. It’s just like Heat, Shotgun, Velocity, Jakked, and whatever other C shows I’m forgetting from yesteryear. It is a program that gives guys who struggle to get on the main shows an opportunity to perform in front of a television audience. They are getting exposure (little exposure but exposure nonetheless) and experience. Ideally they will get over or improve enough to graduate to one of the better shows.

Bigger names and more significant matches is hardly a revolutionary idea but it’s easier said than done. It’s hard enough to fill two hours of Raw and SmackDown every week and a three hour ppv every month. If you want fresh matches you should not be looking for more programming.

I don't know how many more times I will need to say this, but bring back the European Title. It serves a great purpose for the lower card and would give the guys on Superstars something to chase. Trent Barreta and Tyson Kidd put on a five star match earlier in the year on Superstars - if it were for a title maybe more people would've taken notice. The European Title is perfect for guys like Brodus Clay to get some cred before they move into the mid card.

On one hand, I feel that Superstars has been great recently. Good matches, proper time for those matches, and giving guys that don't get to main event a chance to main event. However, as someone else said, with some promos shown on Raw/SD, some real feuds, and some title defenses of the IC/US title could the show as good as SD.

I actually think Superstars should be taped as a seperate event. Superstars and NXT could have TV slots on the future WWE Network. I would extend Superstars to two hours, much like WCW Saturday Night back in the day. Since Superstars is not expected to draw big money like Smackdown or RAW, it would be held in a smaller venue and headlined by a single main-eventer or upper midcard talent. I would give the undercard guys more mic time.

An ideal episode of Superstars would go like this

John Cena comes out and does a whole "Is everybody having a good time tonight?" promo. Cena takes a few jabs at The Rock (because people will be talking about it later). He's interrupted by Drew McIntyre. Blah blah blah, main event match for later.

Match #1. AJ vs. Tamina
AJ wins with a roll up

Match #2. Zack Ryder vs. Curt Hawkins
Ryder wins. The two friends shake hands, and then Brodus Clay comes out, destroys both men and cuts a promo.

Clay: "Like I said on NXT, I was gonna kill all your heroes, and take away everything you hold dear. I'm not doing this for anyone else anymore. I'm in it for me. And you do know that."

Match #3: Alex Riley vs. David Otunga
A-Ry comes out to a pop, Otunga then comes out and cuts a promo.

Otunga: "Jerry The King Lawler is wrong. Michael McGillicutty and I do have charisma. If anyone is boring it's that man right there, Alex Riley. Face it Alex, all anyone ever knows you for is bending over backwards...and by backwards I mean forward...for The Miz. How does The Miz's ass taste..." Riley gets pissed and tackles Otunga to a huge pop, beating the holy piss out of Otunga until the ref has to pull him off, giving Otunga the opening to dominate a small portion match. They have a six minute long match and Riley wins.

Short RAW Recap

- Backstage segment with Johnny Curtis

Match #4 Johnny Curtis vs. Tyson Kidd
Curtis works the crowd with his comedy. Curtis gets laughs by mocking Kidd's screaming, which annoys Kidd. Curtis wins.

Main event: John Cena vs. Drew McIntyre
The match is about 10 - 15 minutes long, but Cena wins to send the fans home happy.

Having Superstars and NXT taped as seperate events would allow leeway to cut down on excessive house shows. That along with utilizing EVERYONE more, would reduce the amount of injuries for individual wrestlers, because a handful of guys are not carrying the entire load. This can prolong each wrestler's career and reduce the possibility of another Edge situation, where a major player's career is ended abruptly

The two main problems I have with Superstars are that there are not enough promos and that it is on a channel most people have never heard of. They should try putting it on a channel more people are likely to have and feature more promos. Having more promos is the bigger one because it would allow practice for the guys who need it and it might help people who stumble upon the show while channel surfing find a reason to keep watching and even begin rooting for someone.
