Fernando Vargas Set to Return to Boxing.

Buffalo Dave

Yeeeeeeeah Buddy!!
That's right Fernando Vargas is making (trying) a comeback after being retired for 3 years now at the age of 33 which isn't terribly old for a boxing comeback. Vargas will be fighting in the Super Middleweight division, his heaviest division to fight in yet against Henry Buchanan, a guy with a overall record of 20-2 record. One of Buchanan's losses came against Andre Ward, who he went the distance with, but lost on all three score cards by a 120-108 score.

The biggest question with Vargas, besides can he make the weight since he packed on the weight since retiring, is what does he have left in the tank? Over has last 3 fights he was TKO'd twice by Shane Mosley and lost majority decision to Ricardo Mayorga. After the three straight losses and three years off from boxing he's moving up in weight. I'm not sure that is smart since he showed a suspect chin at the lower weight classes but time well tell when he fights Buchanan in April. Vargas did however take to Flyod Mayweather Sr. to train with. I just don't see Vargas being able to stop some of the top Super Middleweights like Ward, Froch, Bute, hell even GlenCoffee Johnson would be a tough challenge for him.

Another thing to note about his comeback, is that Strikeforce Welterweight champion Nick Diaz has called Vargas out saying he wants to fight him in a boxing match. Here is Fernando's response,

"He's been calling me out saying he wants to fight me. I'm like, 'Who is this guy? You're not an elite mixed martial artist. You're not even in the UFC.' That's definitely a fight that interests me. He got my attention."

I hope they can make this happen!! We seen the outcome of a prominent boxer stepping into MMA, now let's see a prominent mixed martial artist step into the boxing ring. Funny thing is that if Vargas is really playing stupid on not knowing who Diaz is then, he is in for a real shock when he see's that Diaz has some of the best boxing skills in all of MMA. I hope Vargas does know that there are top fighters in the world that do not fight in the UFC.

Thoughts on the Vargas comeback?

After Mike Tyson became irrelevant, Fernando Vargas was the person who got me back heavily into boxing. I fucking loved the guy. I thought he was as exciting of a fighter as there was, colorful, and that he was going to go down as one of the all time greats.

Unfortunately, his career ended up being a major disappointment. It's like once he lost to Mosley, everything went down hill for the guy. I think he stopped taking his training seriously, and just wasn't into it anymore. I wasn't shocked he retired at such an early age, because you could tell his passion for the sport just kept wearing after every fight. He lost fights he should have dominated (Vargas was FAR superior to that piece of shit Mayorga, and I believe he could have beaten Mosley in both their fights as well), and he just didn't look like the same Fernando Vargas who everyone fell in love with while he was climbing up the ladder.

So, I'm indifferent towards his comeback, especially since he wants to call out my favorite MMA fighter, Nick Diaz. I think the only reason he's calling out Nick is because A) he knows that Nick has the balls to fight him, and B) It would be a fight against a huge name that he would be able to have a lot of confidence going into since Nick is primarily an MMA fighter, not a boxer. If he fights Nick, he knows there are at least two huge paychecks in it for him: Vs. Nick Diaz, and after winning that (don't get me wrong; I'm talking about HIS thought process, not what I think), a fight against a big name in the Middleweight division like Sergio Martínez or Kelly Pavlik or Andre Ward. It's definitely smart for him to come back now with someone like Diaz waiting in the wings for him, but he doesn't have my support like he used to, unless he avoids Diaz and starts fighting like he did at the beginning of his career.

Its a shame he is coming back as he is shot to shit, and he has not kept himself in shape since his retirement, it was shocking what his business manager/partner done to him in ripping him off basically stealing all his retirement fund. That being said, he should get past Buchanan, but please Fernando stay away from all the elites in the division as it will only end badly, i hope he knows his level and makes a quick buck as he was a warrior and i loved the build up with Mayorga(who btw is the number 1 ATG shit talker ever), even this version of Vargas knocks seven shades of shit out of Nick Diaz though.
