What's the craic?
I'm a big fan of the Kevin Smith movies featuring Screaming Jay and Silent Bob as I'm pretty much their key demographic. However, these film all vary in their set-ups and the amount of screen time the two boys have. For example, 'Chasing Amy' is their most serious film and only really cameos the guys, whereas 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back' hardly features a serious moment and they are hardly off screen. So here's the question, pick your favourite J&SB movie and let everyone know why you love it so. Films are listed in release order and (I have excluded external Kevin Smith movies such as Scream 3 for continuity reasons...

Mallrats. For me, its the funniest of all the Jay and Silent Bob movies. Between jokes about uncomfortable places (like the back of a Volkswagon?) the cheesy public access dating game ripoff, jedi powers, comic book references, fake nipples and stink palms, this is one of the best and smartest juvenile comedies out there. I love all of the New Jersey movies, but Mallrats is the one I watch the most.

...even if I can't do those damned stereograms.

I think Dogma was my favorite. I just think it had the best plot, even though i love all of kevin smiths movies.

It has to be Clerks for me. The first movie and best movie of the series involving the two Jersey hooligans. I really enjoyed the rest of the movies as well. Clerks is based more on Randall and Dante though then Jay and Silent Bob. Jay and Bob are good in parts of the movie instead of entire movie though like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Even though the critics hated this and the majority of Kevin Smith's movies, I still enjoyed it.

MallRats was the first movie I saw with Jay and Silent Bob. Chasing Amy followed. As far as the entire series of movies I pick Clerks, but for favorite Jay and Silent Bob mischief scenes I pick Mallrats for the win.

Dogma has Matt Damon in it, so it's easily the best movie. However, my favorite movie of the series is easily Clerks. I like Mallrats, Chasing Amy is half and half (the first half is good, the second half sucks), Dogma is great, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is meh, and Clerks 2 makes you wish you were watching the original.

But Clerks is easily my favorite movie. The writing is hilarious, no matter how many times you've seen it. In fact, I'd say the first few times you watch it, you'll catch something you missed before. Some people get put off by the black and white aspect, but in my mind, it only adds to the movie. Such a great film, and one of the all-time comedy greats.

Excuse me a minute, while my Keven Smith fanboyism takes over, the real question you seem to be asking here is what everyone's favorite View Askewniverse movie, if you were really asking what's your favorite Jay & Silent Bob movie the list would be much shorter, seeing as in order for the movie to be a Jay & Silent Bob movie it would have to feature Jay & Silent Bob as major Characters in the movie, so with that said Chasing Amy is quickly knocked off the list, they're in a whopping one fucking scene in the whole fucking movie, for fuck sake Matt Damon gets as much screne time in this movie as they do (Yes Matt Damon is in fact in Chasing Amy), next movie to be knocked off that list would be prolly be Clerks, you could completely remove Jay & Silent Bob from that movie almost entirely and it would change next to nothing, I've seen that flick countless times, and all though they are fairly entertaining, they add almost nothing to the story what so ever, Clerks 2 could also be knocked off the list, where they are a more significant piece of the story in this movie they are still clearly supporting characters therefore technically this isn't really a Jay & Silent Bob movie, this leaves us with 3 movies, Mallrats, J&SB Strike Back, and Dogma (& I'm being very generous by including Mallrats here) Mallrats they were Supporting characters, but I feel they were a much bigger piece of this story than they were in Clerks 2, I don't think Mallrats works at all without J&SB, Dogma is really the first movie where they could be considered main characters, and J&SB Strike Back, they are obviously the main characters.

Now with all that said, if your asking me my favorite J&SB movie, then I'm going to say Dogma, funnier than hell (no pun intended), fun story, and just an all around entertaining movie, plus this is really the movie where J&SB were at their best IMO

If you're asking me what my favorite View Askewniverse movie, then I'm going to say Clerks, though Chasing Amy & Clerks 2 are both very close behind, but clerks is the movie that made me fall in love with Kevin Smith, the filmmaker, it was just a fun movie, fun story, and in there own ways I found just about very character relateable in one way or another, just a great movie, and one that no matter how many times I watch it's always an enjoyable experiance

This IS what I was asking for, amigo. By picking the films featuring J&SB, I was discarding Jersey Gal et al, which could still be regarded as VAland. It could have been worded better (the last sentence should have read "Films are listed in release order and I have excluded non J&SB Kevin Smith movies such Jersey Girl and other writer/ director worlds such as Scream 3 for continuity reasons..."), but I was hankering towards picking the best of these six as they are the one storyline world. It's up to the viewer to use their own criteria then. Now, as I pointed out, J&SB screen time varies but this is part of the fun - do you prefer the films were they are periphery characters or the ones were they dominate screen time?

Jersey girl was NOT apart of the View Askewniverse, Kevin Smith himself has fucking said this in numerous fucking interviews. There is a post credit sequence at the end of J&SB Strikes Back where "god" fucking closes the book on the View Askewinverse, Jersey Girl is a completely separate movie, it features none of the characters that were in any of Smith's other movies, which was a first, every other movie Smith had made up to this point had featured reoccurring characters (& by "other reoccurring characters" I don't just mean J&SB), Jersey Girl is a completely separate movie that takes place about as far away from the View Askewniverse as you can get, the book for the View Askeiwniverse was reopened with Clerks 2, and sequentially closed once again at the conclusion of that movie, making it the final chapter in the View Askewinverse.

Settle petal, many people might not be as into their KS to know this, so just listing the films and having the J&SB slant removed the problem from the equation... and I would be very surprised if we don't see a return of the guys again (probably about halfway through this decade when we'll move from a 30 to a 40 something slant).

Yikes, I think there was more thought put into what films are in the "View Askewniverse" than there was put into Zack and Miri Have a Porno completely. :suspic:

Kevin Smith movies are all right for me, I don't love the movies that have Jay & Silent Bob in them and I don't dislike them either. Generally I find that they have enough to enjoy that watching them is worthwhile and enough wrong with them to make it so I will probably only watch them once or twice. My favorite, honest to goodness, is J&SB Strike Back. I don't know that that is a choice based on best quality, because Dogma may be better, but I have had such a good time watching and rewatching Strike Back that it is definitely my favorite.

IDK, Smith has said that after Hit Somebody comes out, he's retiring form the film-making game, he's also said that he's getting tired of writing the same characters, and really just can't see himself bring J&SB back again at this age, as it would just look kinda pathetic to see these two stoners still doing the same shit with there lives, after all these years

Then again, you do still have the same type of characters living this style of life to that age (Big Lebowski). Personally, I'd like to see a happy finale for the gruesome twosome (maybe Jay ending up with Shannon Elisabeth and Bob... tbc?). It'd be Smith's biggest challenge and, potentially, his legacy (maybe he can manage something his hero, Lucas couldn't and not lower but raise the bar). Would you like to see them back yourself or do you think 30s is as far as he can credibly stretch it?
