Favorite WWF Pay Per Views(1988-1994)

Occasional Pre-Show
I used to rent all these shows on VHS about 15 years ago, and have recently gotten back into watching them thanks to the internet. I've watched Wrestlemania 3-8, as well as a couple of the Early 90s Rumbles. 1990 Rumble was pretty awesome. I'm just wondering what are some of your favorite shows/pay per views from this era. They can be any show whether it is Raw or a Madison Square Garden show, or some old Tape you had. You can list as many as you want.

As of now the best rewatch I've had was probably Wrestlemania 4 or 8. Royal Rumble 1990 was exciting as hell and Wrestlemania 5 was cool too with the Mega Powers story line.

My fav was Wrestlemania 5. It was a great showcase of talent. Rick Rude won the I-C title, Rick Martel turned heel on Tito Santana, Mr.Perfect/Blue Blazer put on a show, and Macho Man wrestled his heart out. Survivor Series 89 was also pretty good if you're a fan of heels. KOTR 93 and WM 6 are also great ppvs.

Loved wrestlemania 7 as a kid, the warrior vs macho man match was great and i remember thinking it was amazing when hogan beat slaughter for the title.

Summerslam 91 is also a fave of mine just for the bret hart vs mr perfect match

Roysl Rumble 1992 was always one of my favorites from that time. You had Flair lasting pretty much the whole Rumble getting the win along with Bobby Heenan's awesome commentary through out the whole Rumble match. Another favorite is Summerslam 1989. That was my favorite as a kid having Hogan finally in the ring with Zeus. It might be corny now, but as a kid I ate it up. Mania 4 and 5 also stand out. Even as a kid I loved the tournament for the title, and was great seeing Macho Man get his moment, and 5 just on the fact that the mega powers faced off. This actually was probably my favorite time as a wrestling fan being a kid in the Golden Era of wrestling.

This is a hard one. I am a big 1992 fan. I started watching right after summerslam 1991. Im biased towards Survivor Series 1991, my first ppv and I feel the roster was at its strongest from this time until late 1992. Royal Rumble 1992, Wrstlemania 8, and Summerslam 1992 are, IMO, the best ppvs of all time.

Im also a sucker for the Mega Powers angle. I like looking back at the orginal Summerslam against the Mega Bucks. Wrestlemania 5 main event was epic.

Other favorites includes Survivor Series 1992, Survivor Series 1990, Summerslam 1991, Royal Rumble 1994, Wrestlemania X. Great time frame for wwf ppvs.

If I can only choose one, it has to be Summerslam 1992

1: Wrestlemania X- Bret vs Owen, HBK/Razor ladder match. Also one of the first VHS wrestling tapes I watched.
2: Wrestlemania VI: Mostly because it was in Toronto, I grew up NW of there. The Warrior/Hogan match had great build up and the crowd was hot.
3: Wrestlemania V: Mega Powers collide, Martel's heel turn, Henning/Owen put on a wrestling clinic and Rick Rude's IC title win over a seemingly invincible Warrior (which is why they went with the finish they did).
4: Summerslam 92: First PPV held in England where Davey Boy Smith won the IC title on his home soil. Warrior and Savage proved they could duplicate their classic from WM7. But sadly, this is also where Hawk was on his way down showing LOD`s last PPV appearance for a few years.
5: Survivor Series 90- Debut of Undertaker, Bret and Dibease stealing the show as a tribute to one of Bret's recently deceased brothers (Dean?).

Honorable mentions: Survivor Series 1991-92, Wrestlemania 7, Summerslam 91
and (I'll get hatemail but) Wrestlemania 9: It had untapped potential if not for the jealous attitudes of people like HBK (who was supposed to drop the IC belt to Tatanka) and Hogan (Bret-Hulk fiasco) along with poor writing and booking.
The matches booked could of been so much better but with mostly DQ's, count-outs and roll-ups. The only two great matches I remember are: Steiners/Headshrinkers being a surprisingly stellar match and the Two Doinks.

I don't remember anything too much from WrestleMania's 1-14, i have seen all of the WrestleMania's but my mind gets blurry when I think about those. My all time favorite WWF PPV was KOTR. I like tournaments (who doesn't?) and the competition so I'd throw that whole PPV up there. I think SummerSlam 2001 was very good. Edge vs. Lance Storm for the IC Title was real good. Survivor Series 2001 though, in my honest opinion, has to be my all-time favorite PPV during the WWF. I mean you were in part of the ending days of The Attitude Era/Invasion Era and leading up to the Ruthless Aggression/Brand Extension Era. I mean honestly Team WWF vs. Team Alliance/WCW/ECW was very well done. Wrestlemania 18 in Toronto was my 2nd favorite Wrestlemania of all time, but favorite WWF Wrestlemania. To be honest, there were too many solid PPV's to chose

Royal Rumble 1994

This was one of the first WWF PPV's that I bought on VHS, so it holds a special place in my heart. The RR 94 poster/VHS cover is one of the coolest pay-per-view posters I've ever seen, it was actually because of how good the poster/VHS cover looked which is why I bought the PPV, I didn't really bother looking at what matches were listed on the back of the VHS until I got home.

I really enjoyed watching the 30 Minute Pre-Show Countdown that was hosted by Todd Petengil, it got me hyped up and it kept me updated on all the events that lead up to the PPV. I don't care what anybody says about Todd Petengil BTW, I fuckin loved that guy, he was one of the best hype-men in the WWF ever.

The PPV was pretty solid for how it built up WM X and for some of the matches itself.

Bam Bam/Tatanka was a good start to the show, apparently it was originally supposed to be Ludvig Borga that faced Tatanka which would've been just as good, but Bam Bam/Tatanka was still a satisfying way to open up the PPV and get the crowd pumped for the rest of the matches.

The Quebecers/Bret & Owen was a great match and a great setup to one of the greatest feuds ever. Owen's heel turn is one of the best of all time and his "I kicked your leg out of your leg" line in his post-match interview is a classic.

Razor Ramon/IRS was okay, the match could've used a different ending, but this was just mainly about setting up Shawn/Razor for WM X. IRS was a good opponent for Razor in the meantime though.

Taker/Yoko in the Casket was...uh...well...I dunno. The match was nothing special and the ending was weird & eerie, but if you're a Taker fan you might find it kinda cool.

The Royal Rumble match wasn't the best ever but it was still an enjoyable one anyway. It had it's moments like Diesel's dominance in the match, Bret's superhero comeback & effort to try and win the match, Savage & Crush, Tenryu & The Great Kabuki trying to take out Lex Luger for Yokozuna & Mr. Fuji, and the double elimination with Luger & Bret.

Ted Dibiase was also a treat on commentary. He did a decent job and was pretty funny at times. Him & Vince had good chemistry together.

I've got a number of favorites from this era. I'll go in chronological order....

Survivor Series 1990

This was the first ppv event I ever watched. I didn't watch it live, but after I started watching wrestling on TV shortly after Wrestlemania VII, this was the first ppv event I rented from the video store, and I watched it religiously. I loved the Survivor Series elimination matches, and I still wish WWE went back to this formula for having an all elimination match ppv event like they did for the first 5 or so Survivor Series events. I was really hoping they were gonna go that route this year (which I will be attending in Indy!), but alas it wasn't meant to be. This ppv is most famous for being the Undertaker's debut, which of course became one of the most important moments in WWE history, though no one at the time knew they were witnessing a monumental moment. But each elimination match made complete sense. The teams were put well together. Every major feud in the company at the time was highlighted in the elimination matches. And for the first and only time in Survivor Series history, they had a final elimination match between all of the winners in the previous matches to determine the ultimate survivors. I still feel that this is the best Survivor Series ppv of the original "true" Survivor Series events. It was never the same after this one.

Summerslam 1991

This is the most underrated Summerslam ppv event ever. I'll admit I'm biased because this was the first ppv event I ever watched as it happened, but it was still a really fantastic show from top to bottom. All of the feuds that were taking place that summer culminated at the event. From the LOD finally defeating the Nasty Boys for the tag team title (in one of the WWF's first No DQ, No countout matches), to Virgil finally one-upping the Million Dollar Man, to Bret Hart's rise up the singles ranks by winning the I-C title in the best WWF match of that year, to the mystery of would Sid Justice play fair and not be swayed to the dark side of Sgt. Slaughter and company, to the Big Boss Man defeating the Mountie and forcing him to spend the night in jail (which are still some of the most entertaining segments ever put on by WWE), and of course the wedding of Miss Elizabeth and Macho Man (which had been years in the making for WWE fans), it was just a well booked, highly entertaining show. Even the matches that were just thrown together were good (IRS/Greg Valentine, the opening 6 man tag, etc.). The only disappointment of the event was the lack of Undertaker and Jake Roberts, but it turned out okay in the end. Great event.

Royal Rumble 1992

This is a ppv event that's here solely for one match, but it's one of the greatest matches in WWE history (yeah, I said it), that of course being the main event, the Royal Rumble. Although the ppv also featured the only title win in Roddy Piper's WWE career, which was a great moment in itself. But the Royal Rumble match itself, from the booking, to the participants, to the commentary, to what was on the line for the match (winning the WWF championship), it was just overall one of the finest presentations the WWE has ever put on. A classic that never gets old.

Wrestlemania VIII

I'm not gonna lie, I'm biased because I attended this event (my first ppv event I attended, my second overall live event of any kind I attended), but this was one of the best Wrestlemania events in the early years of Wrestlemania. It had the third highest attendance of any event until the stadium shows of the 2000's and beyond. We had two all-time classic matches with Bret Hart/Roddy Piper, and Macho Man/Ric Flair. We saw the rise of two future icons, HBK and Taker, and we saw Hulk Hogan's swan song in the company for awhile (also Sid's and Jake Roberts, and really Roddy Piper's). And the commentary (which I would discover later on after getting the video of the event) was some of the most entertaining ever. Heenan and Monsoon were on fire for this event. A great, highly entertaining Wrestlemania all-around. The third best Wrestlemania of the 1990's, only behind X (1994), and XIV (1998).

Summerslam 1992

The atmosphere here was incredible. We got a top 5 match in the company's history in Bret Hart/British Bulldog. We got a highly underrated classic with the rematch of Macho Man/Ultimate Warrior. And the rest of the card provided solid matches and moments. From Rick Martel and HBK's underrated match, to the opening tag team match with LOD and Money Inc., to Taker's awesome entrance against Kamala. Even Nailz/Virgil and Repo Man/Crush were interesting filler matches. The crowd and the atmosphere though was what made this event one of the best in the company's history. It also could be the biggest legitimate crowd WWE has ever drawn at a ppv (right there with Wrestlemania 23).

Wrestlemania X

One of the best Wrestlemanias of all-time largely due to two matches. Bret/Owen, and HBK/Razor. Though Macho Man/Crush (in Savage's final Wrestlemania match) was highly underrated, and pretty groundbreaking for the time. Plus Bret finally, truly ascending to the top of the company was a great moment. The celebrities on hand were actually entertaining. And having a Wrestlemania in Madison Square Garden always adds an extra feel to the event. Great show. The only thing that hurt was the lack of the Undertaker though.

I'd say those are my 6 favorite events of that time period.
