Faces of Foley

So a while back during my week suspension.. I typed up a thread idea to us upon my return. Now I swore I posted it.. But just went hunting for it and couldn't find it at all. So I'm thinking that I never got around to it. Well since I still have the file, I figure there's no better time than the present. So without further ado, Here she is:

Every wrestling fan knows the name of Mick Foley, and has seen him at least once in one of his many identities. Mick was one of those guys in WWE history (and anywhere else he went) who could switch from one gimmick one night, to another later that show and no one questioned it at all.
So I thought I would do a breakdown of each of the "Faces of Foley" and see which one people liked the best.

Cactus Jack:

One of the oldest Gimmicks around for an active wrestler, as well as one of the few to have been portrayed in all 3 of the (former) biggest companies (WWF, WCW, ECW) Known as one of the most Hardcore, sick, twisted gimmicks in wrestling history. Cactus won numerous championships, as well as had some of the most grueling, over the top matches ever. One example of this would be the "Texas Death match" against Vader, which had such a high level of violence, that WCW refused to book Cactus vs Vader on PPV ever again. During another match with Vader, Jack had 2/3 of his ear ripped off when a spot in the ropes went wrong, but being the Hardcore performer he is, Foley decided to go out and wrestle instead of having his ear re-attached.
After a stint in ECW (which I apologize, I didn't watch too much ECW at the time so I'm not as knowledgeable on it) the Gimmick of Cactus Jack reappeared in the WWF years later in a Feud with HHH. Again, Jack had some of the bloodiest matches of the time.

Mankind (original):

Upon entering the WWF, Foley took on the gimmick of "Mankind" a sick and twisted character who came out to a dim lighting, and piano theme. One of the noticeable things about Mankind in the beginning was the constant yelling, and squealing, added with the fact he was always tearing his own hair out (always creeped me the fuck out as a kid). Making an impact from the start, Mankind attacked the Undertaker on his first night, starting up a feud of some of the most memorable gimmick matches ever, including the first ever Boiler Room Brawl, and the first ever Buried Alive Match.

Dude Love:

Again debuting with a major impact, another "Face of Foley" in the name of Dude Love, on his first night won the WWF Tag Team Titles with Stone Cold Steve Austin. Due to the injury Austin received in a match with Owen Hart, they dropped the titles, but Dude took on a new feud with HHH. In what was one of the funniest promo's ever, Mankind and Dude Love tried to decide who would face HHH, they decided on Cactus Jack. Dude returned once more, but in a Heel role within the McMahon/Austin feud, being Austin's surprise opponent, with Foley losing by DQ. this was the last we would see Dude.. Until the 1998 Royal Rumble.

Mankind (Comical/ Mr. Socko)

Upon Foley's return, he reverted back to his Mankind name, but wore a more casual ring attire, complete with a untucked dress shirt, tie, and sweat pants. (so classy.. Loved it) Entering a feud with Undertaker once again, they had, what by some is considered the greatest, most famous matches in WWE history in the Hell in a Cell match. Who could forget Jim Ross yell out "Good God almighty! Good God almighty! They've killed him! As God as my witness, he is broken in half!" And I must admit, I truly believed that Mick Foley actually was dead, no lie. I watched that match on PPV, and jumped off the couch yelling "OH MY GOD! WHY DID THEY DO THAT!!" This match won the PWI award for match of the year in 1998.
Following this, Mankind turned into a more lovable character, joking around with Vince, and this is when Mr.Socko came into play. (Who didn't love Socko?) Mankind then started a run for the WWF title, held by The Rock, which they had numerous matches, like the "I Quit" match at Royal Rumble, where Mankind took 11 chair shots to the head with his hands cuffed behind his back, Winner of the 1999 Match of the Year. (OUCH! I saw the footage of after the match.. that was fucking sick!) Foley did win the Title a few times between here and 2000, both being short reigns, but still had many memorable moments, such as the formation of the "Rock 'n Sock Connection" as well as being one of the leading factors in the WWF getting the highest ratings EVER (8.4 rating!) on Sept. 27, 1999 with "This Is Your Life" (part 1) After starting the HHH Feud up, Mick returned once again to Cactus Jack, before taking a break from wrestling.

Commissioner Foley:

Finally going under his real name Foley returned in 2000 as the Commissioner, with this incarnation of Mick Foley came a new theme. The Cheap Pop.."right here in (whatever city he was performing in. eg:The WZF)!" punctuated with an intentionally cheesy thumbs-up gesture. Commissioner Foley even made himself the special Ref for the WM match between Vince and Shane, before once again, leaving for a while.

Mick Foley:

Returning once again to the WWE, Mick started a mini feud with Evolution, mainly Ric Flair and Randy Orton. which ended quickly when Mick walked on on the IC title match against Orton. But returned in time for Wrestlemania to once again team with The Rock, and take on Evolution (minus HHH)
For the rest of his time in the WWE, Foley was involved with real life rival Ric Flair, which both mentioned their shots at each other in their own books, and also Vince McMahon once again, before taking a commentator spot on Smackdown, followed by leaving the WWE once again.

So with each Character came new, and for the most part, exciting moments/matches. So who to you was the one that stole the show. Not just in the ring, but also promo wise as well.

Now I am aware that I left out his TNA run. This is due to not watching a lot of TNA really. Not going to sit here and talk on it, if I haven't seen it. If that is your choice though, then by all means, choose it! All I did here was just list a few of the well known ones.

Look at my avatar. Now back to me. If you can't tell, my favorite Foley personality was Dude Love. Now, I didn't have the pleasure of watching WWE when Foley was a consistent on-air character (except for his Smackdown commentary run), but through my crawls of Youtube and the like, I've seen all the faces of Foley. He is one of my favorites and a big reason I'm into wrestling, so I felt obligated to research him as much as possible.

Look, I know his runs as Cactus Jack and Mankind were technically better, but Dude Love is just so much fun! I mean, any Foley is awesome, but Dude Love was so colorful and funny and entertaining. I also loved how it was Mick's first ever gimmick back when he was just a fan making home movies, and here he was on the grand stage. It was just a great success story.

I think Mick himself put it best in his first book when he said that Dude Love made people feel good about themselves. That's what I want in wrestling. I want to watch a show and have fun and feel good. Everything about Dude Love was just that: Fun. And that's why it's my favorite Face of Foley.

I'm a fan of nearly all the Faces of Foley so it's hard to pick one but I'd go with the comical, Mr Socko version of Mankind.

Cactus Jack didn't do much in the WWE but had a great run in both WCW and ECW. It was the first real "character" he ever portrayed and he did a tremendous job.

The original Mankind had an amazing debut and some great promos. The character really had a lot of depth and Mick was able to get over as a heel right away.

Dude Love is right up there as one of my favorites because of many of the reasons Doc said. He was a fun character and it was the first time that we got to see that side of Foley. His entrance music and the dancing he did was hilarious.

The more comical version of Mankind is my favorite because that's when some of Foley's greatest moments and achievements in his career occurred. he won his first Heavyweight title, had a great feud with the Rock and the corporation, and then a little later he formed the Rock n Sock connection with the Rock and they were comedy gold together. The "This is Your Life" segment is still one of my favorites of all time. I was also a big Mr. Socko fan.

Cactus Jack all the way, was my first introduction to him and is stapled in my mind for all time, his best spot was no doubt against Taker as Mankind, but Cactus Jack had the look, the matches, and the feel, him and Abdullah were great..... BANG BANG!!!

One time I wore a Dude Love shirt to high school, and people decided I looked enough like him that for the rest of my time in HS and college, I was known as Dude Love... Who didn't love Sweet Shin Music, or the hands on knees dance.

I am a huge Foley fan, and I can't remember a single moment when I wasn't. But as much as I like the rest (especially Dude Love), I am going to have to go with the Semi-Retired Foley in WWE. His feuds with Randy Orton and Edge are two of my favorite things he has ever done, and those matches (with a broke down body no less) are amongst the top ten, maybe five, matches Foley has ever been a part of...

Nice thread Double M

I'll have to go with Original Mankind

First off, I had never seen anyeone 'smaller' decimate Undertaker like he did. I remember Mankind sticking the Mandible Claw in Taker's mouth and white froth coming from Taker's mouth. That freaked me out. I have never seen Taker as vulnerable as that..EVER.

His music, his look, the way he tore his hear, the mask, his promos...HIS PROMOS!!! My god, if there were ever Oscar's based on promos I would give it to the 'WOOPEE' interview with Ross. Hell, I made a thread called Goosebump promo just because that!

No man before had the twisted logic, and was the poster child for the anti-superstar like Mankind. He was really one of a kind, and whereas someone like Cactus Jack was maybe more appealing and Dude Love was ...well I dunno, The man with the Brown Mask just takes the cake for me.

I have liked all the Faces of Foley, it shows just how talented Mick is that he can pull of so many personas and be loved by the fans in each one.

I would have to say that my favoruite Foley is Cactus Jack. I didnt have the pleasure of watching the original ECW when Cactus was there, but have seen a lot of footage since so I know all about his famous "anti hardcore" and "cane dewey" promos. I only really saw Cactus in the WWE, when during his feud with Triple H Foley switched from Mankind to Jack.

The look on Triple H's face when Cactus came out was brilliant, its why I love pro-wrestling. You genuinly believed he was in shock when reality all it was was the same guy in a different shirt...fantastic.

They had the brutal street fight at the Royal Rumble, and then the HIAC match at No Way Out, which was meant to be Foley's swansong. 2 fantastic matches, and probably 2 of the best of Foley's career.

Personally I go with the Original Heel Mankind. 1996 was clearly Foley's best year ever. He managed to pull a Match Of The Year with Shawn Michaels at Mind Games, according to PWI though he earned Match Of The Year with Taker but either way, he had great matches with Shawn & Taker and he earned himself Feud Of The Year with Undertaker. Anybody who says Foley is a "glorified stuntman" clearly needs to watch him back in 96 cause he was over as a standard wrestler not a hardcore stuntman although he did take a few dives during his feud with Taker. And well no matter what gimmick, Foley is darn good when it comes to promos. He managed to take summit simple like sticking a finger in someones mouth and make it look deadly.

Great thread Mongoose

I'd say that Foley was one of my favorites growing up along with Austin. The character of Foley that I like the most is the original Heel Mankind. That is the scariest character in wrestling.PERIOD.I'm sure the old school Undertaker may have scared a few guys shitless but at least you could tell a kid that he was a zombie and zombies dont exist. There was nothing supernatural about foley. It was made to believe that a guy as demented as him existed in the society. That imo made it even more scary. To this day I have a bit of difficulty classifying heel mankind's gimmick. Most people say he was a masochist but I think he showed some characteristics of a feral child as well(go to wikipedia to look it up.it isnt that pleasant).

Mongoose has mentioned most of heel mankind's characteristics but id like to add that when he had undertaker's urn he used to kiss and cuddle it like a baby or something. That always looked gross to me.Can you imagine a guy kissing someone elses ashes???

I liked face mankind too.I think that was closest to what foley originally is.

My pick is going to be the original Mankind because I feel that is what got him noticed in the first place because all okay being a hardcore guy should not get you any father than a midcarder but when Mick Foley was Mankind he was a main eventer.

I also picked Mankind because it was when he hit the main event and was when the most insane match in the world happened that should have got stopped (Undertaker vs Mankind WWF King of the ring)
