Extreme Rules Can be a Top PPV

Mac Attack

I'm neat.
So the question is the thread title. I am going to attempt to answer if this PPV can be one of the best by providing sevral arguments I have for it. Clearly it would not be better than Mania, Summerslam, or the Rumble, possibly Elimination Chamber but I think it can be up there on that list.

Firstly the concept and timing of the PPV is perfect. Every or most matches are under some sort of extreme rules stipulation. Even better is it is directly after Wrestlemania so any feuds that carry over are put on this card. So now not only do you have the hype for the matches but you also can make the matches in an original way. Generally we get a pretty sloid card for this PPV and it generally is a very good PPV. Below is the card for the PPV last year and certain things I want to point out on the card will be addressed.

World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton (Extreme Rules Match)

WWE Champion John Cena vs. Batista (Last Man Standing Match)

Edge vs. Chris Jericho (Steel Cage Match)

Triple H vs. Sheamus (Street Fight)

Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk (If Punk loses, his head gets shaved)

Women’s Champion Michelle McCool vs. Beth Phoenix (Extreme Makeover Match)

JTG vs. Shad Gaspard (Strap Match)

Starting off with the stipulations. This last PPV card we had an Extreme Rules Match, a Last Man Standing, a Steel Cage Match, a Street Fight, a Hair Match, Extreme Makeover match, and a Strap Match. Now you can't say that this card isn't interesting. It is rare to get all those stipulations on one card and yet every year Extreme Rules does. They make it very interesting to watch and we get to see matches that we don't normally see. The stipulations alone should scream "Buy me." This is the one PPV where stuff goes down and it usually goes down in very interesting ways.

Next the feuds are built perfectly. You get loads of feuds being carried over. It already has the hype and the buildup, and this is a way to make these feuds even better. You have big names going at it and it is surely going to be great. We had Cena-Batista, Edge-Jericho, Sheamus-Triple H. A lot of big name stars in big matches. Yet another reason why Extreme Rules is so good.

Next I want to talk about the quality of matches. The matches at Extreme Rules are typically top notch. Don't believe me watch this video for extra proof.

Also I didn't want to make a sperate thread for this but with Edge's new submission finisher do you think we will see a submission match at Extreme Rules between him and Alberto Del Rio?

I'm gonna say no, Extreme Rules can't be a top PPV

I feel like special matches like the types you mentioned should saved for special, specific feuds...these matches mean more when used in the right place, at the right time

in 2000, Hell in a Cell felt MORE special because it was brought out for Foley vs HHH at No Way Out

in 2009, Hell in a Cell was forced into the Orton/Cena and Punk/Taker feuds because you knew the stipulations were coming because of the PPV title...

By having Extreme Rules right after 'Mania, the idea of the PPV is basically

"WrestleMania Part 2....now with toys" and I don't really like that...I want the stipulation matches to be special..to enhance the drama...not be a regular occurrence at the same part of every year...

I would have to say its a pretty useless PPV because even though its " extreme rules " , they still dont push the limit due to the PG rating. Either go all out, or dont bother with the ppv at all.

I understand what your daying but Extreme Rules really does end any lingering feuds. Henceforth in a way it does add to drama. Most of the time the matches can tend to be predicatble but it doesn't have set stipulations like hell in a cell it can accompance variety which is why I like it a lot.

Well sorry if they don't bring the bloodshed but pushing the limit can be very dangerous. There are reasons why they don't go all out and its health risks. Yes the idea says it should be extreme, and it is you just don't see much blood. They should not scrap the PPV because it does start the summer build up and generally I think starts the road to Summerslam off pretty well.

Going all out is too dangerous to the performers, with all the knowledge regarding brain damage from concussions and the risk of blood borne illness...too risky HOWEVER,

The burden now falls on the PERFORMERS to by their best IN THE PG ENVIRONMENT...there are many actors/directors who have to tone down their normal routine because they go from R-rated movies to PG-13 rated TV shows, the best example I can think of is Quentin Tarantino

He's done MANY gory over the top movies many of which carried an R-rating but were still very good

he also directed several episodes of CSI which because of being on tv and being on CBS which is an FCC regulated channel, he had to tone down his normal style in order to fit in the FCC regulations, these episodes of CSI were still great

The trick is, ADAPT TO THE STYLE...JoMo's Spider-man spots in the Elimination Chamber and Royal Rumble were PRIME examples of how PG-WWE can be athletic

Randy Orton's RKO's out of nowhere (like Evan Bourne) is another example of PG not restricting a performer entirely

If the performers can find creative ways within the limits to be interesting, we can appreciate good work regardless of rating...saying "shit" or blading does not make an entertaining match...tho I do concede that in the right place/time/situation blood or cursing CAN properly add to the drama of the situation...and it should saved for those times

by the way: forgot to add...GREAT THREAD MACIOS! the Prison rehabbed you well.

I'm just of the opinion that Mania as the biggest show of the year SHOULD END the feuds, and only certain select ones should carry over. That's why I loved Backlash so much...because Backlash implied both rematches and NEW feuds from the consequences of 'Mania.

In short, Extreme Rules can work if it is used properly, but that is something the writers AND performers have shown to be lacking at

The only way Extreme Rules can become a big PPV , is if WWE drops Money In The Bank, The Elimination Chamber & TLC PPV'S and have does gimmick matches at Extreme Rules.

The Extreme Rules PPV has to look something like this for it to work as a Big PPV like Mania & Summer Slam:

1. Tables Match
2. Ladder Match
3. TLC Match
4. Last man Standing Match
5. No Holds Barred
6. Divas Lumber Jill's Match ( all PPv's have a restroom break match )
7. The Elimination Chamber Title Match SD
8. The Elimination Chamber Title match Raw
The matches don't have to be in this order, but these 8 matches will make Extreme Rules a Big time PPV. The MITB match can be done at Extreme Rules or Mania.

Yeah gimmick matches actually used to mean something but now they're just thrown all over the place making this ppv not that different.

This is the main reason I don't like these new ppv's.. It kills the match types, like you said CleverName51, we got them at times we didn't expect them e.g. the hell in a cell matches up until 2009, The from then, we know every year we have to wait until October to see this match type and same with TLC we have to wait a whole year to see them, and because they are their own ppv's we know we ain't going to see a TLC or a hell in a cell match at Extreme Rules..

Extreme Rules is a good ppv, they had a solid card last year, put on some good matches, but fails to live up to its name..

Out of all the gimmick PPVs, Extreme Rules is one of the best. I love how you're guaranteed to get feud-ending, fun gimmick matches of all different types. We might see a strap match, a tables match, a ladder match, and a stretcher match in one night, and that's something that you just don't have with any other PPV. The only other PPVs that match up in unpredictability and fun are the Royal Rumble, TLC, and Money In The Bank.

However - a "top" PPV? I don't know about that. I mean, it's really Wrestlemania With Weapons, an improved Backlash, and while I like that a lot, it will always have that shadow of being a gimmicky PPV and an offshoot of the big event that occurred a month earlier. That said, I'm sure it will remain a fun, fun event that could end feuds, start feuds, and give us some good gimmick matches.

This. I hate HIAC PPV because it cheapens the Cell match, and Bragging Rights is totally pointless, but Extreme Rules and TLC are the two gimmick PPVs that I do enjoy. The point of these gimmick matches is not blood, but INNOVATION, and though the younger talent has to step up their promo skills, I think they can demonstrate their innovation if given the opportunity, and Extreme Rules and TLC do that.

I would like to add to what CleverName said. Yes, getting rid of blading is a good thing for the wrestlers, but sometimes blood is shed just as a part of the job. If that happens, DON'T STOP THE MATCH TO PATCH IT UP. It's an insult to the fans and to the wrestlers. Just run with it. Have the announcers use the accidental blood as an example of how brutal the match is.

extreme rules cant be a big PPV but it can be a good 1. This PPV carrys alot of fueds and can be the culmination of some with great gimmick matches. This PPV is definetly a good PPV to look foward to but the problem is there restriction to what they can do so the extreme part is limited so thats a downfall right there

It's going to have to be, they have a lot of actual anything to do in the PPV as apparently the WWE decided to use Mania as a transitional PPV....

I believe it can be a big PPV, but they need to move it to another month. The follow up to Mania can't be big. It's nearly impossible. It's like how Triple H vs Chris Jericho at WM18 is overlooked because it followed up to Rock vs Hogan.

Now, I'm a firm believer that Night of Champions and Extreme Rules can be big PPVs. Simply move both of them back a month or 2. Other than that, they are great PPV gimmicks.

WWE does this so non WWE fans who have heard of stuff will buy. Having a HIAC at a PPV might not get as many buys as basically yelling "HEY, WE'RE HAVING SOME GUYS FIGHT IN A HUGE ASS CAGE!!!". Same with Extreme Rules.

I don't like it as much as making the gimmick's special, but I understand it so I won't rip it. It makes sense.

As far as the whole "WWE is PG so don't even both"....shut the hell up, please. If guys NEED to be gory and vulgar to be entertaining then they aren't actually that good.
