Enjoy the rise in the cost of tuition, current and former college students

After all, who else is going to subsidize this new stipend for athletic scholarships?

The board approved a measure allowing conferences to vote on providing up to $2,000 in spending money, or what the NCAA calls the full cost-of-attendance.

I know if I were a college student, working two jobs and taking out student loans, I wouldn't be able to wait to help fund the women's soccer team to get matching tattoos.

The most relevant part of the linked article?

Schools must infer the cost of additional funding and it will have to be doled out equally to men's and women's athletes because of Title IX rules. While BCS schools have the money and are expected to swiftly approve additional funding, it may prove too costly for non-BCS schools.

I've said it for years. It's a pile of garbage.

I don't know nearly what I should about how this sort of thing works, but where do the profits from college athletics go? What I'm interested in is whether the money goes to subsidize in any way financial aid for the rest of the student body. Whether or not it does determines entirely the way I feel about this.

What profits? Unless the name of your school is Notre Dame, Texas, Ohio State, Florida, and maybe a couple other schools, your athletic department is costing you a lot of money.

The idea sports bring in profits is a myth in the majority of cases.

There are a handful of schools (UK is one of them) that has a self-funded athletic program. I think Texas and Alabama do as well but I'm not positive.

Well, see, there you go, I didn't know that. Bullshit, then, of course. I don't think it'll affect me directly since I'm at a relatively small Division III school, but it's still absurd.

Complete garbage. What exactly do these athletes need this money for? They have all the tuition, housing, food, books, tutoring, etc. given to them already.

As told to me on ESPN's comments section:

On the campus I work on there are 300 lb linemen who get roughly $25 a day. Not enough! Can't get a part time job because of time & NCAA regulations. Combine that with families that can't afford any additional help & the inability to ever accept a free meal & its a problem. I can promise you there are kids that are struggling get off your high horse & stop whining there are kids that need help. I know them!

Apparently, $175 a week (not sure if that includes the free meal plan they get as part of their scholarship) for absolutely no reason other than to spend on food just isn't enough. Which amazes me because I used to do it on about $50 a week.

I graduated last May and I lived and ate at home. I worked some but for the most part it was all school. I have no idea how someone that works full time or even part time and is a full time student as well makes it.

As a freshman, I agree dude. I don't do jack other than schoolwork and it's all I can do to keep my head above water.

It's tough. When I was in college, I'd work 30 hours a week at Staples, and at least that doing basketball. I worked 7 days a week, had a full class load, etc. While I come from a family that is "comfortable", I never once drew a dime from my family in college. Aside from living at home, every expense was my responsibility. Not because my family wasn't willing to help me, just because I wanted to do it on my own.

But I know plenty of people who can't afford a full time schedule because they're busy working jobs. The idea these people should be required to further subsidize the education of athletes is insulting.

I was lucky as in Kentucky there's a program called KAPT. If you pay a large sum at first and go to a state school, you're guaranteed the cost of tuition that it was set at when you paid. I graduated in 2010 and paid tuition rates from 2001. I come from a pretty middle class family but my dad made 100% sure that my college was totally paid for, which was a nice break.

Athletes at my school have unlimited meal plans and there are plenty of places to get food on campus. And they have time to play playstation till 2 in the morning while I'm trying to sleep. I think they'll be ok without the extra 2 grand.

My favorite argument from the ESPN comments:

"Getting a free education is not enough compensation for everything these athletes do!"

"Then those athletes should quit, and get a regular job like everyone else."

"Your idea of quitting is stupid. If they quit, they don't get a paid for college education!"

If they were standing in front of me in real life, I'd stare at them completely dumbfounded anyone could be this stupid.

This is bullshit. I spend about $100/week on food. Granted, I'm not a 300 pound lineman, but I also don't have a meal plan with the school. Athletes are given basically unlimited access to the dining halls where they can eat as much as they want.

What else do they need money for? The only time I spend money on something other than food is for leisure, and if their meals are being covered by the school, that leaves them with approximately $100+ to spend on downtime activities.

Well as if working 25 hours a week, full class load, and fraternity business wasn't enough now I have to work even MORE to pay for a rise in loans for some bullshit athletics department? I seriously want to know where the money is going to go, b/c it can't be any necessity like food or water since, like Jglass pointed out, they already have unlimited meals.

God I love living in the UK sometimes. Sure our tuition fees are going to triple (due to the government deciding that it's not going to subsidise the cost of Universities any more) for next year's students, but the rise doesn't affect existing students so I'm fine in that regard.

Very happy to be in that same boat with ya sir.
