Dream Fight Analysation: GSP vs The Spider

Tha Wolfpac

Hey Yo...
Im thinking of making a series where analyse dream fights that we may want to happen and analyse how it will go down, and how it may end. I hope to bring discussion and debate over a fighters' strengths, advantages or disadvantages over their opponent. So here we go.

GSP vs The Spider

Now this fight is no longer just a dream and is almost becoming a reality, if GSP can get past Shields, which he should. Okay here we go.

Anderson Silva, in past fights has struggles or showed some weakness against strong wrestling oriented fighters. Anderson's weakness is a good grappler/wrestler as we saw against Chael Sonnen. GSP no doubt has the greatest takedowns in the UFC, and is excellent at getting his opponent to the ground which i see playing a major factor in Anderson's demise in this match up. If Anderson keeps this standing i give him a slight edge over GSP, for the shear fact Anderson is so unpredictable with his striking and can really throw anybody off their gameplan. But then again GSP is the master of strategy right?

I seriously doubt GSP would get caught like Chael, but he has been caught before in his earlier years and been submitted; Matt Hughes is an example. I see this fight ending in a unanimous decision for GSP, as he will utilise his superior wrestling, ground and pound Anderson for the win. That's what i think so you tell me how will this fight go down.

Addressing your analogy, I think it's sort of unfair to say that GSP has been "caught before." He was fairly green and Matt Hughes was at the height of his career & to be fair, GSP returned the exact same favor to Hughes. The GSP that lost to Serra and Hughes is a shell of this GSP.

That being said, Anderson has a HUGE advantage in the stand-up area. Aside from the fact that he's a natural LHW, he's taller than GSP and has the reach (even if it's only 1.5"). GSP is giving up four inches to Silva and likely 15-20 pounds come fight night. Anderson walks around at 220. I've met the guy and he's a fucking HUGE MW.

I don't see GSP finishing this fight by KO or submission. I can definitely see Anderson KO'ing GSP, but I doubt he will be able to submit him. GSP might not train with the Nogueira's, but Donaher is one of the best in the business himself and earned his black belt from Renzo.

The only way GSP wins this fight is by grinding out a 25 minute decision and smothering Anderson like Sonnen did. That being said, Anderson did have a rib injury that fight and it was painfully obvious, to me, that Anderson wasn't 100% and wasn't fighting like he normally could have.

GSP could very easily defeat Anderson using the method I said above, but I'm likely to take the fighter who has a proven track record of KO's and submissions over the fighter who, admittedly, fights not to lose. GSP has stated on several occasions that he fights safe and I'm not liking those odds against someone as unpredictable and potent as Silva.

For the record, I fucking hate Silva and love GSP, but I respect Anderson and know what he's capable of doing.

Good to see ya back on the forums.

Another aspect of this fight is GSP is at a huge disadvantage, not only does he fight in a class he is no way comfortable in as he is a natural welterweight fighter he is built for that division. But he obviously lacks in the height department as you stated. So that does give Anderson an advantage that is quite vital.

Thanks man, 2010 was not kind to me. I'll hopefully have more time and not as much shit going on so I can actually wax MMA with you guys again.

To your point, GSP is in a rough spot, I truly think that if he moves to Middleweight, he's going to get owned by some of those wrestlers. GSP is in a rough spot. He's clearly walked through the WW if he beats Shields, but he's not big enough to be a MW. He's sort of like Thiago Alves. Thiago is too fucking big to be a WW, but he's not tall enough or fast enough to be a MW.

GSP can win this fight, but I truly think that keeping the strap at the MW division will prove to be a nearly impossible task.

And before people bring up GSP walking around weight, save it, most MW fighters walk around like LHW's and cut for MW, even on his best day GSP will still be a small MW.
