Don West's new role

Getting Noticed By Management
Anybody else agree with me in thinking Don West makes a far better manager than a commentator? Don was too loud and obnoxious to be a good commentator, he just distracted from the action I thought. However, being loud and obnoxious is a good thing for a manager, and I think he'll fill this role well. Amazing Red is great in-ring but he has no character, i don't think he's ever talked on the mic before, so he definately needs a manager like West if TNA wants the fans to care about him. It seems they have finally found the perfect role for West, at least in my eyes. Thoughts?

I liked West as a commentator, but i'm really loving his work with Red. When Red won the belt, I was amazed they'd give it to someone with little to no background. Then I saw their segment on Impact last week, and was sold on him not only winning, but holding the belt for a long time.

West can handle all the mic work while Red does his in-ring thing, and it should all works towards pushing him as a legit champion.

Don West is totally pulling a Michael P.S. Hayes (Fabulous Freebirds.) Promoting wrestlers while wishing he was doing something else (har har har). It IS good to see Don on the television.

I really disliked him as a commentator. When he took the heel turn in his announcing I found him to be tolerable and even somewhat good. However, when a talent like Taz becomes available, you have to make space and Don was the one to get booted off air.

I am glad to see him back on air as I think using a known talent is better for TNA right now than taking a flyer on developing a new character.

TNA could use a good manager character.

I liked his stupid comments when he turned heel. But its also good to see him on TV as a manager for Amazing Red. His role is showing that Dixie has stopped trying to kick out Jeff's buddies just kick him out. Lets hope that Red's run as champ can be a good one and well handled. I hope to see him managing other TNA superstars in the future as well. Imagine him with Velvet Sky texting each other backstage.

don west was an ok commentator. especially when he went heel. i'll never forget when abyss was getting the straight jacket in the middle of the ring and west so calmly said "its for his own good mike". i pissed my pants laughing. aside from this i agree with him being loud and thats more manager-like. i think he's going to be just what Red needs to stay relevant. Red's moves r sick but he needs a voice and thats where don comes in. is it just me or does don west and amazing red remind you of aj styles and mortimer plumbtree bac in 03, 04. styles was the quiet wrestler who has great ring skills and plumbtree was the loud manager helping styles win. DW and red remind me of them two.

We're wasting a thread on don west REALLY? is there nothing else to talk about. I'd rather see a thread about greg gagne and whether he truly earned his titles or if his father was the only reason for his sucess in the AWA

no offense, but start your own thread then man... back to don west. i liked don as both a face and heel commentator honestly. i understood tna's move w/ him when taz became tenay's partner. honestly, i myself sometimes miss tony shiavonne doing commentary, but that's for another story later. west is doing an excellent job of supporting red, as everyone agrees so far.i think west's enthusiasm down the road will go away tho and he'll somehow turn on red, kind of like how paul heyman did to brock lesnar at survivor series 2002, and he'll start backing another wrestler just to have his new protege' and old one have a hopefully decent feud. this is all simply theory tho...

I know a lot of people don't like Don west, but I always liked the guy. I found him funny on commentary, especially the heel version. Funny in an unintentional way of course. I was hoping they'd have 3 commentators but that didn't quite pan out. I'm glad to see him back on tv and Amazing red really needed someone to do the talking.

i didnt like Don West as a face commentator i liked him better as a heel one, but he makes a great manager for amazing red. it is nice to see Don west back on T.V. Red need some one to do the talking for him and he can show case his talent in the ring, is is cool to see Don west back.

So all you guys are gonna get on here and praise don west. when lets get something straight can't stand the voice its manufactered emotion. it doesn't seem natural like JR's. All you guys will lift up Don West but bury a guy like Lex Luger in the mud. doesn't make any sense.

xedus, in case you missed the point of the thread, it is about don west and his new role. i know i mentioned tony shiavonne, but that was just banter about another commentator, the same job don west had, and the same as paul heyman. where does lex luger fit in? don west doesn't need to be like jr... everyone should be an individual, and west is doing a fine job of that. jr, in a lot of ways, is in a league of his own, or at least among the best of the best when is comes to commentary, and i miss him on raw, but jr only did the managing bit once or twice in his career, w/ dr. death stever williams back in the wwf in the late 90's. don west is trying his hand at the role of manager. deal w/ it. "woo woo woo" what a joke. :lmao:

I couldn't stand Don West as commentator at all be it as a face or a heel. It got to the point that I would watch the matches without any sound.

I don't know why but I like him as a manager even though everything I didn't like about on commentary is the same. I think this will work out for both Don & Red.

Pointless. Well not pointless, but really insignificant to me. Don West was decent on commentary but I was never a fan.

I guess it's nice that he has a new onscreen role, but I don't think it's going to be anything amazing or anything. Amazing Red is not a good talker, and since he's the champion I guess a mouth piece helps, but I really don't think he needs it.

He's over as a face, and unless he turns heel to me West is pretty useless. Oh well I guess it could work out, but I could care less.

Ok you won't me talk about Don West managing red. Don't really care for it cause i don't care for Don West. I was hoping that when Don west left the table he would leave tna. Didn't like him as a heel because he would just blatantly be a jerk and talk about personal stuff between him and tenay during a match. if he wanted to take on the heel commentator role he needed to learn to make witty comments by watching old matches commentated by Bobby the Brain. I like the fact that TNA is trying to step outside the box with him, but i wish he wasn't on camera at all to be honest.

Sidenote: and I have a right to say that because this is a forum. ppl give their opinions abouts guys all the time but you probably have realized that yet because you just joined yesterday. its what we do. If there is a crappy thread ppl voice their opinion its not because i don't get the point. and its okay to mention another wrestler to make a point. i mentioned Luger because i was referencing a past thread and how he got bashed, but everybody gets on WZ and says "yeah i love Don West". You will see a lot of guys do what i did and you're not gonna be able to combat everyone. And if you don't like what i originally said then please don't go to the sherdog.com forums because they bash threads they don't like all day long. I appreciate the back and forth its keeps things interesting.

Don West just keeps proving why he's earning a paycheck. Amazing Red has his chance to do his own mic work, and it shined through why he needs a mouthpiece. He wasn't horrible, but he's not nearly in the same league as some guys in that division.

Later we got to see Don West shilling some merch, and Homicide came out, and really added to his heel character. Don West is doing so much more than just building Amazing Red.

Don West is saving the X Division...

Yeah, I like him a lot better as a manager, too. I think he's finally found his true calling in wrestling. If he ever develops a stable, I'd love to see his guys bully the commentators & have him shove his way back into doing commentary on special occasions, and go all out with his heel persona.

I'm in agreement with a lot of users in this thread who feel it's a mutually beneficial spot for both Red and West. West makes a surprisingly (to my surprise, at least) good manager, and Red seems like he has the literacy level of an inner-city high-school drop-out. TNA is trying to build him into a high-flyer in the X-Division, and it makes plenty of sense to me that they'd do that by letting someone like West handle the mic work while Red does all his "talking" in the ring.

I'm sure DW is happy to be on TV again, too.

I think TNA is doing a great job in turning West into a new Bobby Heenan. even his heel commentary was a great homage to Heenan's WCW style. I miss the days of heel commentators and I think TNA missed their chance to bring the three man announce team back into the fray with Taz as the face color guy, West as the heel color guy, and Tenay calling play by play and playing the middle man between the two. But props to TNA for getting West back on the air and I'm glad to see him doing well in his new role.

Don West was by no means as bad a commentator as people made out, but the area in which he was most lacking was in his wrestling knowledge and it was quite telling at times. In his new role, all of his charisma can be channeled through Amazing Red, who certainly needs work outside of the ring, and he doesn't have to really have an extensive analytical vocabulary. West suits his new role perfectly, and he has given a new lese of life to an immensly entertaining in ring performer that was previously dull as dishwater outside of it.
