Because losing your last match has more emotional attachment than a simple retirement. Do you think people would have shed all those tears when Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair retired if they just announced they were retiring after winning at WrestleMania?
When they lose their last match, it gives the feeling that they could still be around if they'd managed to get the win, and it just causes so much more heartbreak when the retiring wrestler can't pull it off.

Its mainly only guys with lengthy careers that have retirement matches that the OP is refering to. The Rock and Stone Cold it wasnt known that those would be their last matches. Austin was in the hospital the day of WM XIX and Rock was going back and forth with hollywood since 2002. Hogan lost because he had to drop the title in 93.
I would like to point out that RVD won his final WWE match against Randy Orton at ONS 07. Granted Orton beat the hell out of him after the match, but he still won it.

This user gave me a red rep with just that comment. Now had he been in my eyes an honorable he would have gone and posted on this thread and explained why I am ignorant. I was just explaining to someone about the reason why people lose in their last match and gave an example.
This person clearly did not want to take the 5 minutes to explain why I am so ignorant. So I am wondering what I am so ignorant about. Bret Hart WWF Champion. Heading into Survivor Series in his home country at a huge PPV. He is leaving to go to WCW. He does not want to lose to Michaels in his hometown. Understandable, no one wants to go out on a bad note. However, I say he felt he was above the tradition because
a.)He did not want to lose on his last match to a man he didn't like personally and understandably. However, that makes it a selfish reason and makes someone feel above that tradition. Special treatment I think its called. The guy you hate is staying behind for a company that helped BUILD you and you make demands on the way out. I pretty much think sums up to feeling above being the tradition.
b.)He had a hissy fit afterwards and destroyed things on the way out and spit on his former boss. Are those the actions of a man who is going to be honorable to the tradition? I doubt it. I understand his anger and frustration however, that doesn't excuse him acting the way he did.
I like Bret. It broke my heart to see him go to WCW. The man put on classics and wrestling 101 in my eyes when he entered the squared circle. Along with Trish Stratus and Pam Anderson and fitness models I always felt he and his family were Canada's finest. However, like when I review hHh I am not so one sided or ignorant not to see both sides of the story and see that no matter how much I like someone or dislike them you have to call it down the middle.

As far as losing one's last match, Trish Stratus not only won her last match before retiring, but she got to go out as champion - in her hometown, no less.
