Welcome to my latest thread in the Video Games and Technology section and for this one, I would very much like to get a lot of input from the people who view these boards.
As always, I have a little story for this thread so let me get down to it. Earlier on, I was searching through the annals of Amazon and found some games that I would like to buy. However upon closer inspection, I realised that these games are very, VERY hit and miss. More often that not, they are a miss. Now, I don't often decide not to get a game because of the people who made it. Generally, I like to get my hands dirty and get stuck into watching trailers and gamelay videos to get myself some knowledge of the game and how it is put together and will play out. However, I have realised that not every game developer out there is going to give you the cold, hard truth.
A fine example of this is Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. I saw this game for the first time on th day before it's release and I cannot tell you how much I was looking forward to seeing this game and having some hands-on experience with it. So, I followed my natural way of picking out games and evaluated whether or not I would buy it. I searched around for a while and eventually found some game play videos from some of the creators of the game. Upon watching it, I realised that this game looked very good. Graphically and aesthetically, it looked very good and the AI looked very clever. I made up my mind that I would go and get the game and I was really looking forward to it. However, I feel as though CodeMasters screwed me over. I have played the game twice since I purchased it and I really, really feel as though the videos that were out out were designed to give a false representation of the game.
Now, I am not naive in thinking that every game developer will be looking over me like some sort of guardian game angel but to be honest, I would have much rather been told what the game actually entailed without them trying to make it look like Crysis or Call Of Duty. I would have much rather been told that it is a stealth game that relies on your strategic and tactical know-how. If I had only known that this is the game that it was going to be and not led in a completely different direction, I would have saved myself the money.
So naturally, I did the only thing that I could do and that was boycott any games that are made by CodeMasters. I just do not trust them any more. Simple as that.
However, the other side of the coin is pretty bright. To my knowledge, only 2 games developing companies, will I trust to give me a good game and something that I know I will want. These developers are EA and Epic games. EA have been slammed in the past for making sure that every game they release will have a sewuel out for the next year and they actually change very little. I don't really care. You can never get enough of a good thing and that is exactly the mantra that has gotten me into loving EA. They are also responsible for some of my favourite series of games. Need For Speed, FIFA and Tiger Woods. The other thing is, that you always know what you are getting with and EA game and I am always ha[py with what is developed. I may not be blown away with it but at least I wont feel as though i have wasted my money. Epic are the exact same. I love the Gears of War series and Unreal Tournament is one of the most fun multiplayer games I have come across. Again, you know what you are getting with an Epic game and that is a great multiplayer experience and great graphics.
So, wht games developers do you/don't you trust? Why?
