Dave Meltzer ripped into WWE's booking today

The Dragon Saga

Whale in a Teardrop
On his audio cast review of Raw, he said this, taken from Reddit...

We need to invent a new word, because I cannot describe some of the stuff that happened on this show. I can do it in a sentence, but I need one word. "Horrible" is not the word, "incompetent" comes close, but it doesn't have quite the meaning.

We should start with the debut of Charlotte Flair in Greenville, North Carolina. That was probably the dumbest thing I have ever seen on a wrestling show in my life.

This was like, let's sit down and go well beyond Vince Russo stupidity. We're going way past that level. We are going to actively be stupider than chimpanzees. Stupider than a dog with a lobotomy.

It's almost like these agents are completely clueless and are trying to lay out the worst match possible when they could just let Natalya go in there and go "Natalya, you go in there and lay the match out, and we'll give you 10 minutes." They would have torn the house down without a doubt, but no. They did nothing of the sort.

In NXT, her whole thing is that she's trying to be herself. She doesn't do chops or the figure four because she doesn't want to be Ric Flair. Then you get some agent who goes "let's see, what does Ric Flair do... well, he chops and does figure fours." I mean, I was waiting for her to flip into the turnbuckle, but she couldn't do that because if she did, it might actually get over because it's an athletic move.

If UFC could book winners, they'd do the opposite of everything. That's why [the WWE's] attendance is so bad right now, among other things. That's also why they have all these troubles getting guys to get to the brass bring, because anyone who grabs the brass ring, they have this guy with a hammer who's hammering people's fingers as they try to climb, as opposed to helping them up which should be their job. But that's another issue.

He's ripping into everything this week. Ripped into Final Battle, ripped into NJPW's Tag League Finals, ripped into Lucha Underground last week (to be fair last weeks LU was pretty shit, worst show so far), and now hes ripped into WWE. Meltzer's doing a Brock vs. Cena from Summerslam to the wrestling world.

Does anyone else laugh when Meltzer (or anyone) goes on a rant and one of his major points is wrong?

Greenville is in SOUTH Carolina if you didn't catch that.

Just reading his comments on the Nattie/Charlotte match, hard to get the full effect, but he seems right on the money. I went from excited to WTF in a matter of minutes. I was expecting so much more from this match. With the setting they were in this duo could have stolen the show and opened many eyes to the true potential of women’s wrestling in the modern day WWE. Despite what was laid out for the match it was easy to see how talented Charlotte is. Something in the match seemed off with Nattie. It looked like she was just going through the motions. The ending was off and this act between her and Kidd is flat out terrible.

Must be some personal issues bothering him, which he is taking out on the companies. But WWE is often quite horrible though... or incompetent... or that new word he is inventing. I would love to see him rip into the WWE fans that chant "This is awesome" at the drop of a hat.

Meltzer hates wrestling. I thought that was common knowledge by now.

I will agree that whoever booked Charlotte's match has never watched NXT. Do the Flairs ever win in the Carolinas?

Listening to the audio now, he does say South Carolina, the transcript from the Reddit user gets that wrong, not Meltzer. He also adds more than what is above.

Man, I wanted to buy that damn book he ripped for no reason.

I've always wondered if Dave Meltzer is the brother of Brad Meltzer? Yeah, I know, I'll Google it.

How many million people watch Raw? How many of those watch NXT? Really establishing Charlotte as Flair's daughter doesn't hurt. Initially it will get her over and she can do the rest.

She is the daughter of a huge name in wrestling. Why waste that?

He always thinks he knows better than all the wrestling promotions. In his mind, he's got everything figured out. It's the typical IWC nerd x 1000.

I can say, without a doubt, that if he ever started his own promotion, he'd be bankrupt in six months or less.

He started this gangsta shit and this the muthafuckin' thanks he get?

WWE's booking is shitty and stupid, and Meltzer is right to rant about it.

I would counter this by saying all professional wrestling booking is pretty stupid. I mean, it's fake fighting. There's no real way to make that not stupid.

But I'm thinking that if the WWE featured frumpy broads, you'd think it was the best wrestling EVAR!

Apparently people care about what Dave Meltzer said
So he can't be too touched in the head
All of his critics are here
Which I did quite queer...
Where were you to bash him when I made this thread?

The nature of the dudes in spandex business is as such that nothing can really be believed at face value. I mean, the whole business is based on smoke and mirrors. Metzler cuts through that shit pretty regularly, but still he gets kayfabed a bunch too.

He's no MetsFan4Ever though.

I was speaking more to his ability to get wrestling news right. He's right more than other news types are. His opinions, though, can be totally ******ed. He takes his wrestling, and himself, a little too seriously.

I can see what you mean
But, BaconBits, here is the scene...
You have an NXT show to promote.
To keep people from the remote,
Would you have Charlotte Flair lose clean?

Probably not. I probably wouldn't have had her wrestle Nattie even, because they're both supposed to be faces. I would have probably have had her wrestle Ole Blue Pants or something instead. Just a squash match to show how awesome she is.

But I'm not outraged about what happened. In all honesty, I don't particularly care about the divas. It sure seems like most of the audience feels the same way.

Do people still take what Meltzer says seriously? I thought Internet fans had moved past that by now.

I sure hope not, he seems to know his shit but the fact that he is so biased shows that he's not someone to take seriously. With that said, he does make some good points from time to time.

Charlotte doesn't do chops (that often) - but she does woo, she uses a figure four head lock, her t-shirt says "Do it with Flair" and her theme is a dance remix of Also Sprach Zarathustra. I can't believe management would ruin all the work she's put into distancing herself from her dad.

People listen to him for insider info but a lot of his rants can be hilariously entertaining. He sometimes goes on tangents whether it be on promotions, wrestlers, etc. Some of them are very insightful. His knowledge of wrestling history is incredible. I think he experienced a resurgence in popularity or exposure after the Steve Austin/Jericho/Cabana/JR podcasts. Hes on JR's podcast now like once a month to review WWE PPV's. Not to mention hes been praised by guys like Foley, Bret and Jericho in their books. Its sort of broken down the angst some fans had for him.

Not to mention, the Observer forum has 2x the amount of subscibers then this forum has and its a paid service. A lot of them go for MMA though, funnily enough. Meltzer's got a big MMA following.

Plenty of concepts that are stupid on paper work out fine with proper execution. Also you didn't counter the 'shitty' part.

Time for new material. Feel privileged I've played along this long.
