I think it took a little while for him to realize that he needed to act like the casual fan to attract the casual fan. Boxing is and always has been a "high society" sport. People may look down on the UFC, but it's trying to appeal to the average everyday person and as such he needed to put out that persona. Hell it'd be nice to be able to get up and go to your job and be ME in front of the camera all day, every day.

Simply put the prez of a MMA organization needs to look the part. Vinnie Mac being a prime example of the wrestling equivalent. It's all just another part of brand identity/marketing.
