Curious Case: Mark Hunt

Via Armbar

Has a pretty good dick.
I wanted to start an ongoing look at fighters with notable records. Not notable by the amounts of wins or losses they have, but more the names compiled with inconsistencies. Fighters who fell flat regarding what could have been and sometimes what should have been. First up is former K-1 Grand Prix winner, Mark Hunt.

For about 15 years, Wanderlei Silva had gone on a devastating win streak that saw him lay claim to wins over names like Rampage, Henderson, Sakuraba and Mezger. Not to mention that a large majority of them were by knockout. That came to a screeching halt when he dropped a split decision to Mark Hunt in only Hunt's third mma fight of all time. Wanderlei had little answer to much of the huge Samoan's offense and the weight difference between the two men proved to be a huge factor. The victory for Hunt wasn't without controversy; the ring side commentators openly disagreed with the judges decision as did man fans in attendance. Some same that factors like timing, poor judging and size were determining factors in giving Hunt the win. Still, it's a win on his record over a very big name.

Up until the very end of December 2005, there were only three men in the world that could say they owned a victory over Mirko Cro Cop: Fedor, Big Nog and Randleman. That's a pretty short list and if you can remember back to the middle of the decade very few men struck fear like Cro Cop. Hunt was to be the fourth name added to that short list in a very surprising fight. Under Pride rules, one of the biggest factors to scoring points in the ring was aggression. Take downs were not valued the same way they currently are in American mma. Hunt seemed to not burn out as fast as Mirko, even though Cro Crop owned a K-1 victory over Hunt. The fight ended in a split decision, though there are some that would say it could easily have been a unanimous for Hunt.

Anyone familiar with Hunt's career pretty much knows the story after this. He would go on to rack up two more victories before entering a losing streak which was just added to on Saturday night. Despite losing a noticeable amount of weight and stories about how he was taking a return seriously, Hunt was dispatched of by the unknown Sean McCorkle. The means of defeat? Submission of course. The ground game was always a glaring hole in Hunt's game and has given him every mma loss of his career except for one.

Let's hear your thoughts on this curious case. Do you feel like Hunt ever had a real shot at making huge splashes in mixed martial arts? Was he simply a flash in the pan fighter who got lucky or did he legitimately have the skills to back up those high caliber wins?

He never had much of a ground game. Just pure power to pull out of submissions. He never really showed much technique. His striking of course was top notch, and his chin was absolutely fucking rock. He took a monster headkick from Cro Cop and fucking ate it. I really don't think he ever had a chance. He has always been out of shape, and fat which sure didn't help his fighting career. Maybe if he worked his TDD like a monster, and learned some BJJ instead of using power to pull out of subs than maybe. He is to old to completely reinvent his gameplan now, and work pure wrestling. He is done. A lost case. Did he have potential? Fuck yes he did. Did he come to realize it? Nope not in the slightest.

Hunt confuses me so bad. He could be an excellent fighter if he just tried, but I think he really just doesn't give a damn. He seems to have a sense of entitlement about him just because of some of the things he did a long time ago. He needs to train as hard as possible and stay in great shape if he ever wants a sliver of a chance of fighting in the UFC again. He really should have won this last fight, and of course in true Mark Hunt fashion, he lost. He needs to work on that ground game ASAP.

Hunt is done now. He hasn't evolved at all since Pride. Once everyone got use to dealing with his size he was a easy target

Hunt's just been exposed, that's all. He has very good striking, and one of the best chins throughout the history of the sport, but his wrestling and BJJ is simply shit. And the fact is... he was never nothing to write home about. He beat some Japanese bums, and outstruck Cro Cop. The Wandy win, while one of the most entertaining fights of all time, was still nothing special since A) He heavily outweighed Wandy in the fight and B) One could make an argument that Wandy won the fight and got screwed by the judges.

So, yeah... I like Mark Hunt a lot, but his ass always belonged in K-1, not MMA. Semmy Schilt learned his lesson, as did Badr Hari, but Mark Hunt kept at it and his legacy is damaged because of it.
