The most simplistic way for the WWE to handle the situation, if they decide to ever come across it, without having to make too much of an effort is to simply switch the chairs behind the broadcasting table.
Jerry "The King" Lawler is now a respected legend among the WWE fanbase and has been mentioned several times during broadcasts here and there to remind the fans. Sometimes he laces the boots to wrestle once or twice, maybe even make a credible feud to get a new talent over. When he gets in the ring or when his music plays, people cheer for the man and emulate well-known chants to show their appreciation. On commentary, he roots for all the diva's to appeal to the male audience and always has a moral in his voice. This is the guy right now on the commentary that the average joe seems to like.
Michael Cole on the other hand, isn't what you would call the most popular guy on the scene. He's just an average guy doing his job. The role he plays in the company is important, but once you remove him into a different area than people just don't care and they show their distaste for the man. The storyline he has on NXT portrays him as a guy who is very critical of new talent and tries to shoot down the credibility of some stars former backgrounds, elevating the WWE's status in the world. The average fan doesn't particularly like him and cheers when something negative happens to him. They only listen to him because they have too.
These descriptions are currently contradictory to these two current role behind the commentary table. Michael Cole, someone who isn't liked, is supposedly the play-by-play (the face character) and The King, someone appreciated, is the colour (the heel character). Doesn't make much sense, does it? So, why not make Cole the colour commentator and The King the play-by-play? It's been done before and it has paid off. Jerry has been an objective analyst for quite some time and Cole's feud with Daniel Bryan is one, if not, the highlight of NXT. It should indicate that the alignment switch is a logical and successful choice.
So yeah, make Michael the heel and the King a face character... that is, if the WWE wish to change up their commentating team in the near future. It's a perfect time to capitalise on the possible switch.
