College Basketball: What's going on with the Duke Blue Devils?

What's up with Duke? Over the last two years this team has lost Jabari Parker and the core of their 2015 championship roster in Jahlil Okafor, Justice Winslow and Tyus Jones to the NBA. They're starting to mirror a certain Kentucky basketball program when it comes to being a College pit stop team.

Last night Syracuse defeated the Duke Blue Devils at home, handing them their 3rd straight loss and 2nd straight at home in back to back efforts. Despite all this, Duke is still holding a respectable 10-1 odds at repeating their championship run.

Duke doesn't typically lose no more than 4-5 games and it's astonishing to see that they've already dropped 5 loses this season thus far. These last two loses coming at the hands of unranked opponents. Duke is heading out of the top 25 for the first time in a decade. Being 3-3 in conference games while watching North Carolina and Clemson make giant leaps in the ACC doesn't help their case either.

Rebounding has killed Duke especially with Amile Jefferson still out with a broken foot. It had left the baby Plumlee out there to log some heavy minutes(30+)these last 6 games especially since they have nobody else trustworthy to put in. The unfortunate there is a team with a deeper bench will run Plumlee out the game.

Turnovers and rebounds are the emphasis. But it's fair to point out that their lack of front court depth is ultimately what is killing them. Brandon Ingram has played extremely well for a freshman and has led this team along the way with Grayson Allen while they lack the Senior leadership on the floor. Ingram has struggled in games with foul troubles forcing Coach K to keep Plumlee out on the floor longer. The big man has put in close to 40 minutes in these last 3 games.

Is this the year that Duke is not a threat or do you believe they'll turn it around by March Madness?

They've turned it around to some extent, although yesterday Pitt exposed their weaknesses, no depth and no boards. Thornton has improved quite a bit despite still not being able to make a jump shot, but Plumlee and Ingram have really been carrying the team. Allen and Kennard put up flashy numbers but Kennard is a defensive liability and Allen has a tendency to pout and take himself out of the game mentally when things don't go his way (see Jimmer Fredette). They are still a tough team and well coached obviously but as the Pitt game showed, foul trouble will most likely do them in come tournament time. Plumlee has logged serious minutes and done a great job but he can't do it all, one or more of the guards needs to start grabbing some defensive boards or they are toast
