Classic Tag Teams - The Bushwhackers

poppycock

Championship Contender
First time I saw The Bushwhackers was during the not shown on TV Summerslam 1992 match in which they paired up with Hacksaw Jim Duggan to beat the team of The Mountie and The Nasty Boys. I have only watched a handful of matches since then to be honest and it got me thinking how over where they during their WWE run? I know they where changed from a more hardcore act pre WWE to more of a light comedy act to fit in with the product at the time.

They got quite a good reaction at Summerslam but it was the opening bout they where on the face team and the event had one of the greatest crowds I have ever seen so I can't use that as anything to measure by. Why where they never WWE Champions and where they ever close to becoming such? Just a silly gimmick Tag-Team or a member of the greatest WWE Tag-Team never to become Champions club?

The Bushwhackers were just a comedy team for the most part. They were over with the fans because of their unorthodox style. They had a few decent rivalries, most notably with the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, but they weren’t ever going to get anywhere near the gold. Tag team wrestling was great in the late 80s and early 90s. There were plenty more deserving teams than the Bushwhackers. A lot of teams from back then didn’t get the gold because that era was dominated by teams like Demolition and The Hart Foundation. The only time I remember the Bushwhackers even getting a title shot was against the Nasty Boys on SNME shortly after WM7. I’m not saying the Bushwhackers were a bad team, but with teams like Demolition, The Hart Foundation, The Brain Busters, The Rockers, The Legion of Doom, among many others The Bushwhackers just weren’t very high in the pecking order.

Yeah, I thought as much. I watched quite a bit of WWF around the time they were involved (mainly through VHS releases as I never had sky tv back then) never saw or bothered to watch many matches involving them though. The Tag division was full of great teams at that point just like you said so it makes sense how they never got to hold the gold. More deserving teams than The Bushwhackers were missing out such as The Rockers (apart from when they won the belts and it got erased from the books or whatever) so guess they never had any chance. Still a fun pair to watch though for what they were worth.

(just realised I got my were's and where's all fucked up in my original post..oops)

I've been meaning to ask about them for a while on here. I've never seen any of their work. I met Bushwhacker Luke back in April at Honor Takes Center Stage here in Atlanta. He said his tag team partner now resides in New Zealand. Luke resides up in northern Canada. I know this will probably get accused of derailing the conversation. Sorry.

From what I can remember about the Bushwackers they sucked. I mean they had decent tag matches with just about anybody they stepped in the ring with, but their gimmick was downright horrible. The licking of random fans faces was just hideous. I remember them getting a shot or 2 at the titles but even at 5 and 6yrs old I never took them seriously. I wouldnt call them the best team to never win it either, Im just saying the Orient Express were alot better than them

idk about one of the best to never win gold, but they were fun to watch as a kid, I also never really got into the face licking, but it just added to their wacky style, Mysterio touching head to head with the kids reminds me of the bushwhackers a little, don't get me wrong it's not licking, but head to head contact none the less. The last match I ever saw involving Andre The Giant was when he was in the corner of the Bushwhackers, that gives them some serious cred, I'll always have a soft spot for them, I think it was a match against the Beverly Brothers, now that's a tag-team lol...

Does anyone remember when they were The Sheepherders in WCCW?Man they were vicious.I can't recall if they ever won the tag titles there but they were a much better team as heels.Personally i think they would've gotten a better opportunity in NWA.

They were ok, nothing special but just a fun team, especially for the kids. If they were around today they would probably get given a title run, but back then the WWE took tag-team wrestling seriously and there were alot of very good teams around, some of which (like The Rockers) never had a official tag title reign. There was no way that The Bushwackers were going to get the belts ahead of guys like them, especially with teams like the Hart Foundation and Demoliton in the title hunt.

And the face licking was disgusting. I didn't watch the WWF back then but after seeing it since becoming a fan I thought it was pretty rank. Imagine how many moles and spots they will have licked. Pretty foul
