Chris Paul to Lakers - Not Official?

They're giving up Gasol and Odom? What are they trading to get Howard? No way Orlando is trading Howard for Bynum, straight up, and considering Bynum seems to have health issues every year, what are the Lakers going to do for a post game?

I don't doubt the Lakers have a plan, I'm just really curious as to what it is.

The Lakers are definitely lacking a post game, however, if you look at the other elite teams in the West they aren't exactly strong inside. The two best teams outside of LA are OKC and Dallas. Dirk is a tremendous all around offensive player but I wouldn't call him a huge post presence as he isn't down there all the time. Tyson Chandler is gone so they don't really have much of a center right now either. OKC has great defenders in Perkins and Ibaka but no one who is a threat to score much inside. Memphis would be the one team that could scare the Lakers with Randolph and Marc Gasol (assuming he resigns). All in all I'll take CP3 over Gasol and Odom.

One of the few times a Boston team wasn't even in the running for a major star because of cap space. Makes me a sad, sad panda. And to the Lakers....ugh. I hope he realizes right now that he's second fiddle to Kobe and that he's going to be holding that ball a whole hell of a lot less than he was in New Orleans. Kobe pretty much is LA's point guard.

I'm not just thinking of scoring, but defense and rebounding as well. Even if neither Odom or Gasol will ever be confused for Dennis Rodman, they were still more worrisome than anyone able to take their place. I HAVE to believe they have a plan to bring someone else in.

The Celtics actually had a Rondo for Paul deal on the table but CP3 said he wouldn't sign an extension.

They definitely do need more then Bynum, Derrick Character, and Devin Ebanks, but like you said I'm sure they have a plan. At the very least they can get a couple veterans with the mid level exception who can defend and board in the post. Short of getting Dwight Howard they are going to be weaker inside but the positives CP3 brings them will outweigh the negatives of losing Odom and Gasol. Not just for this season but for the future the Lakers needed a new superstar.

Chris "as long as he stays healthy" Paul is a great addition to the Lakers as long as he stays healthy. He makes his teammates look like All Stars with his passing ability. Free agents will be more likely to sign with LA to play a few years with Paul.

Just taking a quick look at free agency I could see the Lakers picking up a tandem of Carl Landry and Kurt Thomas. Landry is a very good rebounder, solid defender, and played with Paul in New Orleans for a short time. They could get him with the mid level exception. Kurt Thomas can rebound, defend, knock down a 15 footer consistently, and he could be had for the veterans minimum. Not great but it could certainly be worse.

I think Dwight Howard is heading to LA soon enough, so there lack of a post presence will be solved. LA is definitely trying to setup their post Kobe team.

Bynum, picks (if they have any), maybe get a third team involved. I have no idea.

This. Probably. The Magic are probably beginning to realize they have no shot at signing Howard to an extension, so why not ship him out west? If he signs somewhere else, they get nothing in return.

I hate the NBA. Just cut every team outside of LA, New York, Boston and Miami. Six team league. Fuck it, not like any other city can compete. Dallas, but I doubt they're as "important" as the other cities mentioned.

Orlando could get so much more then what the Lakers can now offer in a trade. The best LA can do is Bynum and Darius Morris (plus someone like Steve Blake or Luke Walton to make the salaries even) for Howard. They can't even take on Turkoglu's fat contract which Orlando wants to get rid of.

The Nets can offer a package of Brook Lopez and two first round picks for Howard. Plus the Nets could afford to take Turkoglu's contract because they are expected to amnesty Travis Outlaw.

Take on a third team who can (take on Turkoglu's contract), then send something their way to ease the process, maybe?

What third team would take on Turkoglu's huge contract and get virtually nothing in return? The Magic certainly wouldn't give them anything good and the Lakers don't have anything a third team would want outside of Bynum.

There's no way the Lakers can get Howard right now. Bynum is legit the only asset they have, late round 1st round picks aren't attractive and they don't have the cap room to take any shitty contracts. They need to be more concerned with getting a competent big as their froncourt is woefully thin right now.

I'm just throwing random shit out there. The Nets, like you said, are far more likely to pull in Howard.

Exactly.

And the whiny, bitch ass players wonder why the owners wouldn't cave on anything. All these ***** want to play together and in big cities, while the smaller market teams just continue to suffer.

The NBA catches a lot of flack but pretty much the exact same thing happens in baseball. Pujols and Wilson to LA, Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle to Miami, New York and Boston getting huge names pretty much every year.

The deal will likely get done eventually. If the League didn't own the Hornets then there probably wouldn't have been any problems.
