Former Portugal manager Scolari took over from Avram Grant after Euro 2008

The club's website revealed the dramatic move had been made "to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for".

World Cup winner Scolari had only been in the job since June 2008, when he became Chelsea's third boss in a year.

Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League but remain in the Champions League and FA Cup - with Ray Wilkins in charge until a successor is appointed.

"Luiz Felipe Scolari has been dismissed as manager of Chelsea Football Club with immediate effect," read the statement. "The Chelsea board would like to place on record our gratitude for his time as manager.

"Unfortunately the results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season.

"In order to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for we felt the only option was to make the change now.

"The search for a new manager has already started and we hope to have someone in place as soon as possible."

Scolari won the World Cup as manager of his home country, Brazil, in 2002.

He arrived at Chelsea following a six-year spell in charge of Portugal, who he led to the final of Euro 2004 and the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup.

The 60-year-old made an impressive start but results deteriorated and of his 36 games in charge, 20 were won, five lost and 11 drawn.

Chelsea, who were unbeaten in the league at home for 86 matches until Liverpool's 1-0 win in October 2008, have lost two home league matches and drawn on five occasions this season.

Their record against the so-called big four this season is poor - they drew 1-1 at home with Manchester United and lost 3-0 away, were beaten 2-1 at home by Arsenal, and home and away by Liverpool.

Scolari's men were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Burnley on penalties and travel to Watford in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.

The FA Cup tie at Vicarage Road is the start of a vital 11 days for Chelsea which includes a trip to Villa Park for the crucial Premier League clash with Aston Villa on 21 February, followed by the visit of Juventus to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League four days later.

"Scolari's popularity has been plummeting in the past few weeks," said former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin. "The question is, who is going to be able to do it with a squad that is clearly not strong enough?

"This is a club that a year ago was one of the biggest in the world and quite clearly it seems to have gone downhill quite quickly.

"I hope for Chelsea's sake they don't have a knee-jerk reaction and dive for the first name that comes into their mind. They need to give it an awful lot of thought and maybe consider someone that isn't the biggest name in the world."

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has now overseen the departure of four managers since his arrival in 2003.

Claudio Ranieri was sacked in 2004, Jose Mourinho in September 2007 and Grant in May 2008.

A banner unfurled during Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Hull at Stamford Bridge on Saturday called for the return of former Blues favourites Gianfranco Zola, currently in charge at West Ham, and Roberto Di Matteo, the MK Dons boss.

Chelsea were booed off the field at the final whistle and sections of the crowd could be heard chanting "you don't know what you're doing" at Scolari.

A senior West Ham boardroom member told BBC Sport the club has had no contact from Chelsea regarding Zola or his assistant, former Chelsea coach Steve Clarke.

Former Chelsea manager John Hollins told BBC Radio 5 Live: "It's not like international management where you choose a team every one or two months and can choose from players across the country.

"The Premier League is not leisurely and I don't think he felt comfortable week in, week out picking teams and talking to people.

"They might have done it just in time to resurrect their season. If you are going to do something, it was best to do it now."

Well known Chelsea fan and former 606 presenter David Mellor said: "I'm shocked but not necessarily surprised. Because of the way Chelsea are run, they can turn any problem into a disaster. Where is the point in dismissing a man with his record?

"I cannot see the point in getting rid of him, it just leaves a vacuum in the dressing room at the vital moment. The idea that Chelsea's problems begin and end with Scolari is nonsense."

Ex-Chelsea winger Clive Walker added it would be a tricky job for whoever is selected to lead Chelsea forward.

"Results count," he said. "When you at one of the big teams and spend money then trophies are expected and the team are currently going through a really bad patch.

"It's going to be a tough job because they aren't playing well despite the talent in the squad. They also have an ageing squad and I'm not sure that with the credit crunch and everything whether there is any money there to spend."

This really baffles me as Chelsea are in still contention for the Premiership and are still in both the FA Cup and Champions League. Chelsea have made a big mistake as now they will have to decide if they will bring someone in just for the remainder of the season or sign someone permanently.

I can Frank Rijkaard as he is a manager that likes attacking football which is what Chelsea have been doing since they were bought by Abramovich

I think the premiership has changed so much since abramovic brought chelsea and he hasn't realised it. Chelsea do not have the might they used to have - everyone has it! You need to bring in a manager and let him build his squad and let him take his time over it, you don't become world beaters over night (Look at Man City). Roman needs to let a manager build a squad and not expect instant success. He got it with Mourinho but that was at a time when no-one had their financial muscle (and Mourinho is a damn good manager). Roman should have never got rid of Grant imo

i only saw this a couple of hours ago and just laughed out at it to my flatmate who is a Chelsea fan. Managers just arnt gettin enough time, Chelseas excuse is '' we are having a bad run at the wrong time'' WTF every team has bad runs. He's not done a bad job at Chelsea, this changing managers after only a few months business is making me really dislike the Premiership at the moment.

Who to replace him, their talking about Avram Grant (which i laughed at) but i can see maybe Di Matteo or Zola Goin back

According to BBC Sport, Chelsea are close to signing Gus Hiddink which surprises me as I would have thought Hiddink would have stayed with Russia until after the 2010 World Cup

He's doing both jobs and staying with Russia after the end of the season. There is still a debate on whom will take over after that. I think Zola would be a step backwards - he doesn't have the experience to manage a team of chelsea's expectations. I think Sven Goren Ericsson may be a good choice for managers who are currently looking for work (even though he is Mexico boss, I could see him coming to England without a seconds thought). Frank Rijkaard was another name but to be honest I don't think he'd cut it in England either - He did well at Barcelona but to be honest with their players and transfer budget I think I could probably do well there as well

hahahaha i think even Ian Holliway and Glenn Roder would do well at Barca. think if Hiddink does a good enough job Chelsea will keep him on. i dont think that he will continue with Russia for long now

Idiots. Nothing to do with the fact I'm practically in love with Scolari, honestly. Seriously though, isn't that 3 they've sacked in just over a year? With a replacement appointed they'll have had 4 in 2 years, what sense does that make? I think if 3 people haven't worked out, none of which were bad managers beforehand, maybe Chelsea need to look at other factors? Like their team just isn't as good as it once was and the Premiership is getting more competetive? I'm saying that, but Chelsea aren't particularly doing badly, most teams would love to be in their position. Yes, Chelsea want higher, but maybe that's not possible right now.

Chelsea will do fuck all this season. Why? They have NO consistency when it comes to managers. They've sacked them for no reason too. What was wrong with Avram Grant? Took the PL to the last game of the season, and lost to penalties to the mighty United in the CL final. Hardly a failure. I mean, sure the owner put a lot of money into the club but results don't just come like that. It takes time. Look at Aston Villa. They've slowly been increasing their league position, and now they're fighting for top spot arguably, although no-one will ever admit that. Anyway, basically it was a stupid decision. Managers need time, and it's proven that if you give them time then they SHOULD get it right. Sure they won't always but give them a chance, especially Scolari who is a class manager. Look to Sir Alex Ferguson, 193 managers have been sacked since he took over United, and look where faith has left Utd now.

Player power got rid of him, not results, I refuse to believe that. The main problem is that they've brought in huge players, but with that they've also brought in huge egos who all think that they are God's gift to football and have a divine right to play every game. Drogba's not at all happy at Chelsea, he's wanted to leave for the last 18 months, yet he's still there, and whilst he is he's effecting the team, Ballack's another one, huge ego, huge pay packet, just there to cause trouble because they're practically untouchable. If I was the Chelsea board I'd have looked to getting rid of trouble-causing players before sacking a world class manager.

the problem is Roman Abramovich. hes expecting his team to sweep the board and i dont think he understands that chelsea are and ageing squad. Ballacks in his 30's Anelka and Drogba are not exactly young, Deco was a waste of money and again is old. They need a young striker with pace if there expecting anything next season. im suprised they didnt try and get Agbonlahor, cos lets face it they have the money and he fits what they need perfectly.

Player power? maybe didnt really help that Scolari didnt really speak good english. There is alot of egos and the biggest is probably our beloved England Captain John Terry. i cant imagine him trying to defend Scolaris tactics to the players.

All in all i think Chelsea need to clear the old and bring in new fresh players.
