Canadian Tennis

Hopefully this is not the kiss of death for these guys, but what a terrific time to be a fan of professional tennis for Canadian tennis fans. On the men's side of things, we see a dominant performance from Milos Raonic in the round of 16 to advance to the quarter finals of the French Open, becoming the first Canadian male in the modern era to accomplish this feat. Unfortunately, his next opponent is Djokovic, so I imagine his run is about to come to a screeching halt, but it's still a pretty impressive accomplishment for the eighth seed to begin to really establish himself in the upper echelon of men's tennis. He's looked great in this tournament.

On the women's side, we see the continuation of the meteoric rise of Genie Bouchard (the #18 seed who won a title in Nuremburg last week leading up to the French), as she too reached the quarter finals of this grand slam event with a stomping of the eighth seeded Kerber. Not too far removed a semi final appearance at the Australian Open earlier this year, and considering the top seeded women have been dropping like flies this tournament, I think she is a legitimate title contender at the French Open this year.

Canadian players have not enjoyed that much success historically in singles play, with some success on the doubles side only. It's nice to see a couple of up and comers enjoy some success on the singles side of things.

Now, if they could only figure out some way to eliminate or at least reduce the grunting by the athletes, especially on the women's side, it would be an incredible time to watch professional tennis. They've got to solve that problem. Sharapova matches are nearly unwatchable because of it, and she's hardly alone.
