BLACK: Criterion's True Masterpiece

Uncle Sam

Rear Naked Bloke
That's right, Sam's back to make threads that yet again will garner few - if any - posts or views. So let's kick this bitch into third gear. No, I don't know what means.

Criterion are, as many of you know, the people behind the commercially successful and critically acclaimed Burnout series. Burnout Paradise was gonna be shite as soon as they announced the concept, but otherwise I've thought the series was great. They may have made some other titles as well; I really haven't done my research here.

However, I think Black (or "BLACK") is really their best game. I bought it when it originally came out for the PlayStation 2 and, after discovering it had a place on the Microsoft Backwards Compaitabilty (sp?) List, then again for the Xbox yesterday. Though the graphics have aged, they haven't done so as terribly as I feared.

Although I (probably unnecessarily) reconfigured the controls for my comfort - and for the 360's updated pad - the gameplay still holds up too. More than holds up. For my money, this is the greatest First Person Shooter out there. You know COD4: Modern Warfare? Well, this is it with worse graphics and louder guns. It did for FPS's what Burnout did for racing games.

Unlike Burnout, it seems to have been completely ignored. It's never given credit and never have I seen it creep up in any sort of gaming discussion. it's probably happened, but I've never seen it. The game is pretty much unadulterated gun porn. I mean, all guns can shoot through solid concrete. The level where you have to run through a graveyard as sniper bullets literally blow away headstones is still one of my very favourites.

I don't understand why it doesn't get that much love. For extras, here's the advert:

They did that in one take with real automatic weapons.

I absolutly agree, This was the only console shooter I could ever play without being board to tears.
The controls just overall feel better then any other FPS, they just some how felt smoother.
The A.I was awesome, a huge variety of guns and you could destroy anything with them.
The game was linier but you could go off and search the level for a long time without getting lost.

It was intense from beginning to end, fire fights never got old.
The explosions for the time were some of the best I had ever seen.
I even enjoyed the rather cheesy cut scenes that were in real life.

I think this game was very under appreciated just because at the time, online gaming was starting to become the new standered for games, and since black didn't have online modes, it went under the radar.
