Best time for Championships

Alright so here is a question I don't think has ever been asked on this site, and if it has been asked it hasn't been asked for a long time since I just checked the past few pages and couldn't find anything.

The question is what was the best era/time frame had the best championships. Now I am not asking who the best champion of all time was. What I am asking is when was the best time in wrestling to care about the championship belts.

For me I would have to say about 1999 (1998 and 2000 included) in the WWE. Reason why is I felt as if every single title meant something different in the WWE and they had titles that really could highlight each stage of wrestling.

First you had of course the WWE Championship. The grand daddy of them all. You were the best in the world. Hands down.

Then you had the IC Title, a title that meant you were a key piece in the WWE product. Granted you may not be WWE Championship material but you have a big impact on the show. Guys like D-Lo Brown, Godfather, Road Dogg, were holding the IC title in 1999. Guys who didn't have what it meant to be WWE Champ but still making a huge impact on WWE programming.

Then you had the European Championship. A title that I think has as much meeting as the current IC Title. It meant you are young and working your way up the WWE ladder. Although it was a little later then 1999 this title helped build guys like Benoit, Angle and Eddie Guerrero in the WWE, who would go on to become Main Event champions. This title really showed who the best mid cards were.

Then you had your gimmick titles

Titles like the Hardcore championship. A nice little gimmick title that really added to the entertainment value of the show. It allowed for the Hardcore wrestlers to show the world what they were made of and helped put those guys over with the fans. Guys like Al Snow, Crash Holly and Steve Blackman most likely wouldn't have gotten as close as much TV time without the Hardcore Championship.

Light Heavyweight, granted wasn't as important as the Cruiser weight Championship over on WCW but it still added to the complete package of WWE Championships. It gave Cruiserweights/Light Heavyweights an avenue to show their stuff.

The Tag Titles actually played a important role in WWE programming. You look at the guys in 1999 like The Acolytes, Hardy Boyz, New Age Outlaws, Undertaker and Big Show, Rock and Sock Connection, Dudleys, Edge and Christian, Too Cool...this was an amazing time for tag team wrestling and this title actually meant something.

Overall this time was best time to actually care about the championships in my mind.

What do you guys think though? When was the best time to care about the championships?

the rock n wrestling era was a good time for championships, guys hel the ic and world and tag belts for 6 moths or more regularly, wich made the titles really mean something when they changed hands, hogans first reign was four years, macho mans world and ic title runs were a year each, the belts were made so much more important in that era its a shame to see whats been done to them in the latter years of wcw and wwe today, being used as a prop to quickly elevate a guy isnt the way to go, you use the guy to elevate the title IMO

I’m going to have to agree with Jeff and say around 1998. I believe, not only did we have to most Championships active, but they all pretty much meant something.

WWE had the WWE, Intercontinental, European, Hardcore, Light Heavyweight, and Tag Team Titles.

WCW had the WCW, United States, Television, Hardcore, Cruiserweight and Tag Team Titles.

It was almost to the point where every storyline involved a Championship…the way it should always be. It’s only logic.
